The Hidden Life, by Erin Noelle

The Hidden Life BT banner.jpg

Hi, there! Welcome to another gay book review! And I have another one scheduled for later, mwahaha mwahaha! *evil laughs* I think I should change my blog’s name to The Gay Book Adventures of Annelise Lestrange, haha! Just kidding, not going to happen, but I’d do this name a lot of justice.

ANYWAYS, let’s talk about the star of this review? I received The Hidden Life, by Erin Noelle, from Love Affair With Fiction in exchange for an honest review and to do my blog stop today 🙂 The Hidden Life is a spin-off novella of The Perfect Life, but I didn’t need to read The Perfect Life to understand and love The Hidden Life 🙂 Erin advises us readers not to do that; she says you should read The Perfect Life first, so I apologize by being a rebel and ignoring her warnings, haha!

the story

Seth and Colin are the best of childhood friends. They are that kind of duo that does everything together and is on that intimacy level in which they can read each other’s minds just by standing near each other.

Perfect? Perfect.

However, Colin has a secret. Something he thought he hid well enough and that absolutely no one knew. Colin is a gay boy in the middle of a feverish Catholic family and is the quarterback of their high school team – aka, the most popular guy ever.

What Colin didn’t know was that Seth had two secrets. First, he knew about Colin. Second, he wished to be with Colin. After whoring his way on Colin’s rejected girls for years, Seth realized that the only bed he truly wanted to be in was Colin’s.

And that was the begging of two things: their romance and their hidden life.

the analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG I HAVE NEVER READ ANYTHING LIKE THE HIDDEN LIFE OMG!

bunny omg

Seriously, this book was so intense, so realistic, full of feelings and unusual that I read it all in one sitting! When I blinked, it was all over and I was left DESPERATLY NEEDING MORE! Not enough to actually take an interest in The Perfect Life (we’ll talk more about this later), but enough to wish that this book was a full novel instead of a shy spin off!! Due frustration over its size and thinking that three key scenes on Colin and Seth’s amorous life were missing on this novella, I give it 4 proud stars!!

The narrative style was first person from Seth’s point of view. We get a Colin glimpse on the Epilogue, but I wish I could have seen more of him telling the story, haha! I loved Seth since page one, he is just brilliant AND HE IS A FREAKING JOURNALIST JUST LIKE ME OMG!

vanessa hudgens fangirling.gif

Noelle’s writing style is a work of art on its own. Simple, delicate and strong, she grabs your heart and twist during the whole novella, making you grab your seat and the paper bag of the nervousness to accompany you on this adventure. Often enough you could find me like this last night:

agony

AND IT FELT SO GOOD! *–*

The plot was simple and complex at the same time. I quoted Frank Herbert a couple of times already, but once again, his words are true here: “There is no real ending. It’s just the place where you stop the story”. Being in a gay relationship on a scenario that makes it even more socially harder than it sadly is only increases the stress and problems of the couple. I wish Noelle had took her time to develop more their history together, their romance, and not just knitted together some of the major turning events of Colin and Seth’s lives. Noelle had such a wonderful idea for The Perfect Life, why couldn’t she fully tell this story again from another perspective? I doubt her fans would mind and she would win bores like me as additions to her fan base.

You may argue back: “oh Annelise, but the author already wrote the book, why don’t you get your ass out of this computer and go reading it?” Well, because I’m a true bore with my straight contemporary romances 😦 I don’t feel I could finish a book from Monroe’s point of view, as I didn’t like her enough for that. Especially a first person narrated book. I’m almost positive that I would end up being mad at Monroe and this would ruin the rest. The only case scenario that I can see myself reading The Perfect Life is if someone showed up and gave me a paperback copy of it, haha! See why I wished The Hidden Life was more complete?

the lord is testing me.gif

Also, I felt that three key scenes were missing on this novel, being it told from Seth’s point of view. I can’t say which those are due spoilers, but I can tell you that there is no sex in this book, just a bit of foreplay. And surprisingly so, the sex was one of the key pieces here.

awkward silence

But moving on to good aspects: characters! I may have not cared much for Monroe, but I can’t say a thing against her construction. All characters were awesome and I felt their identities as I read the novella. Noelle is that kind of writer that makes the reader feel like they always knew how the characters are, as if we all are great childhood friends. HOW DOES SHE DO IT?!

darcy pride prejudice you have bewitched me body and soul

Obviously Seth made it to My Bookish Boyfriends list, being awesome, hot and a journalist 😉 I didn’t add Colin because while he is all hot and perfect, he is also a big egocentric type. Only Seth can throw Colin out of his pedestal, so no Colin for me, haha!

Overall, if you like contemporary romance, quick reads, jaw-dropping twists, hot journalists and unusual marriage arrangements, you should grab The Hidden Life 🙂

The Quartermaster & The Marquis’ Son, by A. E. Kendall (Clash at Sea #1)

Hello, there! It’s me, again, back with a pirate romance review! Er, gay pirate romance, of course. You can’t expect less of me, right? Haha! It took me a shameful month to read The Quartermaster & The Marquis’ Son, first book in the Clash at Sea series, and I know why: BECAUSE I INSIST ON CHEATING MY MONTHLY TBR’s! Instead of taking 3 to 4 days as this book would require of me, I’d sneak it in every day that I had free time that wouldn’t be used reading another book. Last Saturday I decided to end this madness and properly finish the book. Poor Kendall had her mailbox full of fangirlings and hysterical attacks from me all month long and for that, I apologize, haha! And all of this after she being kind enough to send me this book in exchange for an honest review. Thanks so much, Kendall, and I’m sorry for being a pest!! HERE IS SAID REVIEW!

the quartermaster & the marquis son.JPG

the story

Michel is a nobleman in a quest. After a series of unfortunate events on his life (you saw what I did there), Michel decides to run off his comfortable and wealthy home in search of his older brother Alain, the only person on his family that acted the part. His brother was sent off to Porto Prince for allegedly bad behavior in society, but Michel is sure that their father was wrong about it and sent Alain off to make both Alain and Michel miserable.

Nothing would stop the French youth in his pursuit, not even a never-ending fever, seasickness during his trip from France to Porto Prince. Not even a tall, dark and handsome pirate that assaulted his ship. If he had to die fighting and desiring the man, so be it.

Galen is a pirate in a quest. After being wronged and humiliated (among other worse things) by another awful pirate captain, Galen is hell bent in pursuing the bastard all over the seas until he gets his revenge and peace of mind back. He knows he is doing the right thing for himself and nothing will stop him from getting back at the bastard.

Not even a very skillful and dashing Frenchman found at one of their targeted ships. If he had to die fighting and desiring the youth to save him and have him, so be it.

the analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

So, I took my sweet time reading this book. It was so intense and packed with adventure, action, romance and longing that I could have been found sighing and giggling every time I had my hands on The Quartermaster & The Marquis’ Son. I loved the characters’ construction, the writing style, the historical accurate setting, the plot, the twists, EVERYTHING! While I think it could have been shorter in some parts and wished we could have seen more about Galen’s past (like we did with Michel), it still was a 5 full stars read for me! ❤

The narrative style was my favorite kind: third person with switching points of view between Michel and Gale. This was crucial for us to understand and not hate Gale, as he is those silent, deadly and shy types, haha! You know, shy regarding feelings and demonstrations. Michel, in the other hand, is passionate, naïve and very forthcoming about any desire that he may have, so both completed each other and the story with the help of the switching povs.

The plot almost killed me, to the point that I e-mailed Kendall asking if I would have a heart attack on the end or if I could just grab a paper bag and wait for it to get better, haha!

sheldon breathing into bag nervous the big bang theory.gif

Poor Kendall having to put up with me, but the plot was complex, detailed and full of twits and turns. Some expected, others completely mind blowing. I found it the perfect combination, as those twists made me second-guess myself during the reading. I thought I could predict the outcomes, but could I? I had already been right and wrong before – not to mention all the times that I was simply swept out of my feet by not seeing things coming, haha! It was very nice to live on the edge with this book and made me feel like I had a breath of fresh air among my historical romances. Don’t get me wrong, I love the downward sugared ones, but this one was so different *–*

perfection

As this is the first book in a series, it doesn’t make sense to talk about loosing ends, so moving on 🙂

The characters were one of my favorite parts on this book! They were so real and alive that I wanted to hug many and punch many, haha! I loved Galen’s crew and friends, that consisted of Phillip ( ❤ ), John, Alex, Erich (I’m almost sure that is his name, I’m awful with names, haha!) and Davey. I also loved Captain Jack, I hope to see him again on the next book and loved Alain. I even sympathized with the guy that was Galen’s captain’s mate and plaything, Marcus. It’s so new to me to love and remember so many characters as I finish a book that I’m a bit emotional right now.

steve martin happy tears

Also, I felt these guys weren’t mere sidekicks. They were relevant and necessary to the story’s unfolding and I loved Kendall even more for that! ❤ Also, I got some new book boyfriends to add to my ever growing list *–*

Now, the main characters. OMG, WHAT WAS ALL THAT CHEMISTRY, ANGST AND LUST?! OMG, IT WAS SOO HOT!

britney spears hot hot hot

I loved to see how Michel and Galen’s feeling developed on their adventure and how there was no kind of instalove, only curiosity and lust in the beginning. Michel was a strong and stubborn bottom that would never allow Galen to stomp on him and Gale was always worrying about Michel’s well being and what was best for him. Seriously, I fangirled and squeaked  a lot over them *–*

I feel on the duty to inform that every sex scene present in this book was meaningful, beautiful, needed and carefully executed to always express how much the parties involved cared for each other and wanted the act. No vulgarities, no endless fucking for no reason. Just love. In all kinds and forms ❤

Also, I need to point out how amazingly well the historical settings were described and presented by Kendall. She always worried about all the small details, increasing a lot my knowledge on a typical day in a buccaneer’s life. It was a most pleasant way of learning!

Overall, if you like pirate books, hot sex scenes well positioned, a swoon worthy romance and awesome twists, PLEASE READ THE QUARTERMASTER & THE MARQUIS’ SON! *–*

Thanks so much for reading my review 😀 Also, I’d like to thank Kendall for being a sweetie and having gifted me with a copy of Alain & The Duke, a novella that works out as a prequel to The Quartermaster & The Marquis’ Son! *–* Can’t wait to read more about Alain!! And, of course, also thank you for this book in the first place, haha! ❤ I loved it and I’m sure many other gay book fans will love it too!!

Emerge, from Tobi Easton (Mer Chronicles #1)

Emerge banner.png

Hi, there! Welcome to a very fangirl review involving mermaids! ❤ Of course I’m talking about Emerge, first book in the Mer Chronicles series from Tobi Easton, the new mermaid pearl in the bookish realm! (You saw what I did there, haha!) Chapter by Chapter organized this cool release day for the book and I’ve received my copy from Month9Books in exchange for an honest review, so I united both posts into only one, haha! Let’s do this!! ❤

 the story

Lia is literally a fish out of the water. Being a teenager is complicated, but being a teenager that is also a mermaid – and one that has never lived on the sea – is way worse. She can’t even confess to her high school crush, Clay Ericson, and tell him how handsome his smile is, as he is a human. Never mind the fact that her parents want her to fit into the human world, Lia still is forbidden to date one.

For one year, Lia was in control of her emotions. She put distance between herself and Clay, focused on studying and keeping her legs firmly on the ground – literally. She wasn’t happy, but wasn’t unhappy either, as this is just how things are for her race since the disaster with The Little Mermaid. Yup, that one.

Until Mel becomes the new girl and an octopus on Clay, with her hands and body all over him. It’s beyond painful for Lia to watch them together, but there is nothing she can do to compete with a human girl… Which Mel totally isn’t.

Over Lia’s dead body that she will allow another mermaid to play with Clay’s feelings.

The war is on.

the analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

First things first: OMG EMERGE IS SO GOOD I LOVED IT SO MUCH I CAN’T STOP FANGIRLING ABOUT IT AND I APOLOGIZE TO MY OFFLINE FRIENDS FOR BEING UNSUFERABLE TODAY BUT I CAN’T STOP TALKING ABOUT EMERGE! It was such an amazing and heartwarming book! Without any doubt, Emerge is one of the best YA books that I’ve read! Also, it officially stole the position of best mermaid book that I’ve already read, but unfortunately there wasn’t many participants on that contest (I’ve only read three mermaid books besides Emerge, that was my fourth. A SHAME, I KNOW!). Tobi did a marvelous job and I have so many technical questions that I wish I could talk to Caspian! And date him. And live in Emerge’s universe forever. *sigh* FIVE STARS!

And yes, this is going to be one of those fangirling all over reviews.

friends jumping happy

The narrative style was first person from Lia’s point of view all the time and I can’t express how much surprised I am with myself that I liked Lia so much. Even when she screwed up! I’ll talk more about her personality in a bit, but I really would love to congratulate Easton on making me love her female YA protagonist, as this is hard to happen, haha! Also, the writing style was very good. The reader feels like Lia is their own consciousness and that she is theirs. It’s so easy to just close my eyes and picture myself standing beside her as things go on. She managed to be observant and focused all at once. Lia takes all her surroundings without forgetting that she’s on a mission, having a conversation or just relaxing. Characters like Lia and writers like Easton are the ones that transform writing and reading in acts of magic.

you're wonderful

The plot was very good. Simple, but good. There were minor twists during it, but nothing that blows the mind away. Since day one of Mel in our tails [haha], I knew she was trouble and she indeed was trouble until the very end. I really liked to see how Easton developed the story, the romance and the characters’ relationships. There is no instalove, as Lia and Clay have known each other for one year before the book starts, and there is no amorous triangle, as we know how deep Caspian’s feelings for Lia are and she makes a point of leaving him forever friendzoned (and now I decided that this is a word. I’m a rebel lol). And have I mentioned how much I loved Easton’s construction of the Mer world?

tumblr_nff5xlWpi31qeclafo1_500

I did, I loved it and I need more! When can I get another book? 😀

I'm waiting

Now, the characters.

Have I mentioned how awesome is Lia?? SHE IS FABULOUS! Seriously. She’s perfect in all her imperfection, besides being a strong and dutiful protagonist – two rare things in female main characters in YA. She puts her family well-being above her own just as much as a teenager can manage and she sticks with what she believes, but also loves to learn new things and see new places. She can be both dutiful and a freedom lover. HOW DID YOU MANAGED THAT, EASTON?!

let me love you

And then there are her males. The childhood best friend and my future husband, Caspian, and the not-so-far-from-actually-being charmed prince, Clay. Clay is human and Lia knows they can’t be together, that they don’t have a future for many reasons, but the previous year holds many events that made inevitable for Lia to fall for Clay despite everything. Clay is the really good boy that acts like he’s bad type, which I personally also find very hot, haha! But who really enchanted me was Caspian, who also was mer. He is so amazingly intelligent and handsome and a merman and we have so much in common! (Many of my offline friends will tell you that I am actually a mermaid in disguise, as I have a strong bound with the sea and the water element overall since I’m a child, haha! Funny thing is that I’m a Leo, hmmm… Caspian and I are bound to be a thing!

Lia’s sisters are also a handful! Em is the strict one, the twins are the wild ones and Lia is the balance. She’s not that strict and not that wild, haha! I felt like I belonged so hard in her family that now I want to go and live with them! 😦

Now, my favorite part ok, not really, but I loved it a lot: Lia’s cousin, Amy. She lives Above with Lia’s family and she has a sweet and cute secret that I actually squealed when was revealed, haha!

anna kendrick squealing.gif

I can’t say more due spoilers, but believe me: the small things will surprise you in Emerge.

Oh, and can I just tell how sweet was the romance between Lia and Clay? IT WAS SO SWOON AND SHIP WORTHING! I loved to see them together and am really satisfied with how things turned out to be, haha!

these are the moments that make life worth living

Overall, if you love mermaids, YA, strong females and a book swoon worthy, you need to read Emerge now! FORGET THAT I HAVE A BLOG AND THAT INTERNET EXISTS ALTOGETHER UNTIL YOU ARE FINISHED AND THEN, PLEASE COME BACK AND FANGIRL WITH ME ABOUT IT!!! ❤

Love Me Never, from Sara Wolf (Lovely Vicious #1)

Hi, there! Welcome to the second official review of the day 😀 It’s part of my stop at Love Me Never Blog Tour, hosted by Chapter by Chapter 😀 I’ve received my copy of Love Me Never, first book in the Lovely Vicious series from Sara Wolf, in exchange for an honest review and the moment has arrived!

the story

3 years, 9 weeks, 5 days.

That’s how long it has been since the last time that Isis Blake fell in love. If she can help, this counting will never end. She knows that ugly people like her are not loved, so why even try? She’s okay with being just awesome and perfect all the time instead. Also, she’s the new girl in school, so she has yet to teach people in East Summit High how awesome she is.

Her regular boring high school days come to an end rather quickly, as Isis ends punching the most beautiful and unsuferable boy of the school right in his nose during her first party. How can people allow Jack Hunter to say the most awful things to their face and still like him?

Someone has to put the Ice Prince back into his place in humanity. And Isis is more than willing to be this awesome martyr.

The war is on.

anigif_enhanced-buzz-5351-1389581734-11

the analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

Honestly? This book was everything I’d hope for and more. SO. MUCH. MORE. I laughed out loud so many times with Isis that my cheeks still hurt, haha! She was one of the best female characters ever and she officially joined my bookish bffs army! Seriously, she rocked my world. I’m feeling blessed for meeting so many wonderful contemporary romances lately – a book like Love Me Never makes me re-think all my previous opinions of the genre and see it in a whole new way!

tumblr_mu9h1b48nW1rix3h3o1_500

Also, I could NEVER EVER have predicted that twist and the cliff hanger in the end, OMG! Without any shade of doubt, this is a full big five stars read!

The narrative style is first person, switching points between Isis and Jack, but we mainly follow Isis around, as Jack is the mystery to be solved. I loved Isis and I longed for this sense of camaraderie since Integrity and Gifted Thief. I can only imagine the size of the damages both women would do if working together, haha! World domination is a given!

The plot is ingenious and makes the reader wonder through the possibilities all the time. It’s not really hard to guess the whole story with Isis, but we are left wanting for what Jack truly did for so long! It’s nothing Sherlock Holmes-like complex or anything, but the war and the strings that Jack and Isis pull off during it is just BREATHTAKING! AND THAT TWIST IN THE END?! OMG OMG OMG!!!

i like sam winchester supernatural

The lower characters were totally obfuscated by Isis and Jack. While Jack is the not so mainstream beautiful untouchable type minus the vampireness, Isis is the epitome of a bubbly, smart-ass and strong teen girl. She has insecurities, has deep problems with herself and still manages to pull it all off and have fun, being always true to herself and her beliefs – no matter the social costs of that. Kayla, Wren and Avery also had a big part to play and were very well constructed characters, but seriously. I can’t see their shine like Isis does. ❤

I decided that Jack earned his spot on My Bookish Boyfriends list, despite some things that he did during the story that left me less than impressed. I have a weakness for good looking, really bad and mean and intelligent guys. I wish more real men would appreciate the beauty of being intelligent, haha! Also, Jack reads manga! OMG!

the club can't even handle me.gif

The strongest point on the book is for sure its dialogues and Isis deep thoughts. She’s the what-you-see-is-what-you-get person when it comes to her mouth, so she talks exactly in the way she thinks and this can be both brilliant and hilarious, haha! I took the liberty of selecting some pearls from the book for you to understand what I’m talking about, haha!

This dialogue when Isis first meets Kayla:

Kayla: They are probably VEOs or something.

Isis: CEOs.

Kayla: Yeah! I guess it’s a really important job, but then I thought about it really hard and how can it be so important if it’s only three letters?

Isis: You may be onto something. Something very drunk, byt definitely something.

~*~

This dialogue between Isis and her mom:

Mom: Did you have fun? How many boys did you make out with?

Isis: Seventy. At least.

Mom: How many shots did you take?

Isis: Fourteen. I let go of the wheel halfway home and Jesus drove me the rest of the way.

Mom: I’m glad you had fun.

~*~

A small sneak peek of how Isis and Jack war goes:

Jack: How did you find me? If you hacked into the Club’s computer to look up my appointments-

Isis: Whoa, I think you overestimate me, shitlord. Last time I checked, all I did was be in the wrong place at the right time. I saw you and had to-

Jack: Stalk me.

Isis: – delicately approach you. In a sideways manner. From behind. Without being seen at all. For ten minutes.

~*~

And those Isis solo wisdom moments:

“If I were less perfect I would probably be bothered by insults.”

~*~

“And he uses big weird words, so he’s probably a huge nerd. To be fair, I do, too, but that’s because I’m mildly fabulous. Jack has no such excuse.”

~*~

“Thanks, ancient Chinese philosofers. You guys are the best. And the deadest. But mostly the best.”

~*~

“If there’s anything I’ve learned this year, it’s that I have to stand up for myself, or no one else will.”

~*~

“I know it’s hard to believe, but some people my age aren’t entirely obsessed with the idiotic game called dating! Some of us have lives! And generally higher goals than messing around with our peers. I’ve got colleges to apply to! And friends to hang out with! And an entire life to plan!”

~*~

“I’m not fighting anybody. Well, I have to fight on a daily basis not to marry myself, but no.”

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

I loved The Wedding Date so much!! It is official: I like my contemporary romances with strong women, funny and gentlemen-like men, without unnecessary sex scenes and with much love and passion involved in smart dialogues ❤ Light and fun, The Wedding Date is a lovely read that I couldn’t put down until it was over. Five stars!!

The narrative style was first person with switching points of view between Kate and James. I really liked both characters, so I could pull it off. I wish I always hit it off with characters that are the narrators to their own story. My life would be so much more easier, haha!

The plot was simple and highly well executed: small-town girl comes back after years away for studying, runs into high school prom date that become a hot as hell man, he needs her help and they fall in love in the process ❤ I loved it, haha! The romance was so real, so sweet that I wanted to hug both Kate and James, haha!

miley cyrus hannah montana hugging stuffed animal

I love the characters to the core: Kate was strong, decided and secure almost all time. We all have weakness and self-pity moments, but she always manage to pull herself out of the hole without much drama. Her life story is far from being a fairy tale even after James stepped in, but I do believe that they will be happily ever after on their own ways, haha! Also, James is perfect. I love men that cook. I think it’s like the sexiest trait a man can possess, really. And the fact that Kate loved to eat what other people cooked was so me that I laughed hard ❤

that is so me.gif

James is very realistic and good humored. He always have fun things to say and good stories to tell – the fact that he may be hot as hell also helps his case, I guess. He made it to My Bookish Boyfriends list easily, haha! He did all the right things but he clearly wasn’t perfect, you know?

And omg, how I wish I was a part of the Abell family. I’m not complaining, my own family can be a handful (sorry, guys, I love you!), but they were just SO FUNNY! I think I haven’t pinned for a family like this since the Weasleys when I was a child, haha!

If you love romance, fun books and light reads, you really need to grab The Wedding Date

Princess of Tyrone, from Katie Hamstead (The Fairytale Galaxy Chronicles #1)

Princess of Tyrone tour banner.jpg

Hi, there! You are indeed seeing another review up on the blog, this is not a training, haha! This is my stop for YA Bound Book Tours blog tour for Princess of Tyrone, the first book in The Fairytale Galaxy Chronicles, from Katie Hamstead! 😀

I’ve received my copy from YA Bound Book Tours in exchange for an honest review – thank you again! The moment is here 😀

The Story

Apolline is the kind of girl that you wouldn’t call feminine. Raised by her three fairy aunts on a very small and far away planet, Apolline knows her way around hunting, self-defense and cursing just like the galactic pirates that often stop by the planet for trading. She knows that she’ll have to marry some guy when she reaches her 21th birthday, but she tries to not give it too much thought. It’s not like her aunts would tell her anything anyway.

Allard is the kind of prince that is perfect for his place in the world. Well-mannered, dutiful, highly educated and handsome, Allard has been prepared all his life to rule when the time comes. He knows he’ll have to marry princess Elpida when she reaches her 21th birthday, but tries to not give it too much thought. It’s not like he can break the arrangement.

Allard and Apolline had never questioned their fates until meeting each other. Apolline had never met a man like Allard, so clean, schooled and handsome, and Allard had never known a girl that didn’t faint on his presence – or didn’t know at all that he was that Prince Allard.

They know that their days are counted, as both are betrothed to other people, but how can they simply walk back into their old lives after what they experienced with each other?

Can they walk away and fulfill their fates or will their passion end their worlds forever?

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

I make no secret that Sleeping Beauty is my current favorite princess (come on, her life is too #goals, haha!), so I knew I’d like reading Princess of Tyrone. I just didn’t expect to fall madly in love with it and it was great! I loved the world building, the writing, the switching narrators and styles, how Katie rebuilt Sleeping Beauty’s world and tangled it up with a ton of other fairy tales! It’s just too good to be true ❤ I honestly loved everything on this book, I can’t say a thing! FIVE BEAUTIFUL STARS!

The narrative style switched between first person from Apolline’s point of view and third person from the POVS of Allard and Bryanna. It worked so wonderfully, omg! I already had loved this technique in Slumber [review here and also a Sleeping Beauty retelling that you should totally check out!], so it was nice to see it in good use again!

perfection

The plot was simple and, as anyone that knows Sleeping Beauty’s story, I already knew how things would end. The catch here is how Hamstead managed to entwine other fairy tales on the story, like Cinderella, Snow White, Hansel and Gretel and Rapunzel. I loved this tying up to the core and thought that this added the mystery that the reader needs to keep going through the book. Once again, it wasn’t about finding out what happens, but how it happens. If you don’t like predictable stories in general, this book may disappoint you, just as any other fairy tale retelling.

tumblr_m0nd5cyOzx1qdx814

The characters were easily the strongest point in this book, along with the technical stuff. Apolline is another strong female main character, THANK GOD, and Allard is perfect on his imperfection. He is a prince for good and bad and Apolline compensates that, haha! I loved everyone in the book, included evil sorceress Bryanna. It was so good to hate her, haha!

boo you whore regina george mean girls

Allard and his best friend whom I imagine several hot gay scenes with during the reading as I’m a sick person Beau White were the perfect double and both made it to My Bookish Boyfriends list! I know, two at once. I really need to start that new religion now, haha! Bookish girls all over the world will support me, I’m sure lol (If you’re new here and don’t know what the hell I’m talking about, please check this post. Laughter is a given, haha!)

Ahem, back to business. This is my third Sleeping Beauty retelling that I can recall and, by far, my favorite. I can’t wait to read the next volumes on The Fairytale Galaxy Chronicles and see just who Beau and Nathaniel, his younger brother, shall marry! Even though I’d love for Beau to fall in love with another man. *sigh*

thats just weird and freaks me out zoey deschannel new girl.gif

Sorry, I can’t seem to hold myself these days. More yaoi reading may be in order…

Overall, if you love Sleeping Beauty, kick ass females, swoon worthy boys, beautiful writing, futuristic and high-tech worlds and fairy tales, Princess of Tyrone is your book 😀

A Love for the Pages, from Joy Penny

Hi, there! Welcome to my first of many reviews for the day! ❤ It’s a pleasure to say that all my book reviews today were very pleasant reads that warmed my heart ❤

Our first star is a book I received from the author herself in exchange for an honest review: A Love for the Pages, from adorable Joy Penny! Thanks so much for trusting me with your work, darling! I loved your book so much ❤

The Story

June Eyermann is back to her small town life after her fist year at college and she couldn’t be more disappointed. Her best friend, Deana, doesn’t speak with her for months, her classes and subjects suck hard, she had to deal with the fact that her ex-sort-of-boyfriend is her younger brother best friend. Oh, and on top of all that? June better get a job real soon or she’ll be stuck with her stepdad in his company all summer as an internee.

But June is okay with all that because there is one place where no crap can reach her: the romantic classic world. Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights are her favorite books ever and always manage to make her feel better about anything.

That is, until she meets Everett Rockford, the oh-so-rich and desirable heir of the Rockford family, that runs everything in June’s small town. The guys seems like a walking Darcy Rochester Heathcliff version of her favorite novels… For good and bad: All the good looks, all the bad traits. Too prideful, too blunt, too full of himself. The perfect jerk.

Only that June refuses to really fall for a guy like that. It’s one thing to read about it; it’s another entirely different to live it and feel his detachment on her own skin.

June just wants to walk away from this dream-turned-nightmare. She would hate to find out if the guy also keeps a wife locked up on his attic.

The problem is Rockford is not going anywhere but after her.

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH! I knew it would be a blast since Joy’s first e-mailed me, but it was way better than I anticipated! I’m not a great fan of first person narrated books or contemporary romances, but this book touched me. It was too close to home, in a good way. I’ve never lived any kind of romance, but I could relate and understand June. Also, I liked her and the rest is history lol If I met a guy like Everett, I’d run like crazy too. And that’s the catch of this book: is mister perfect really perfect? I had such deep reflections upon this story that I often stopped reading and stared to my bedroom’s wall in pure epiphany, haha! I couldn’t give it any less than 5 stars

The whole story is told by June’s perspective and this surprisingly worked very well for A Love for the Pages. As Rockford is supposed to be a walking mystery (and he is), the fact that the reader is kept in the dark along June makes us want to devour the book and understand what the hell is Rockford’s deal. Once again, I have to take my hat off for this narrative style, haha!

i request the high fives.gif
me for Joy, haha!

The plot was simple, but full of little mysteries. Small town girl meets very rich boy, doesn’t really like him, spends time with him, starts to like him without realizing and they fall in love. No biggie, nothing complex, but oh-so delightful! I was in a small reading slump before grabbing A Love for the Pages. Now I need more! Lucky me I just found out that Joy wrote a prequel for this book on Wattpad, called A Love for the Mistletoe ❤ Reading this tonight for sure, haha!

Anyway, I lost my track of thought. Point is, anything that Joy writes from now on, I’ll be certain to read. To the characters!

friends jumping happy.gif

I loved every single character on this book – especially June and Rockford. June is a cute enough girl that seems younger than she really is, with a practical side fighting her romantic dreams. I related so hard to her that it hurt, haha! She was also small, just like me, oops! She loved the classics and was so clever, but so dutiful. And completely clueless on the right things. I think I’m too besotted with her as a protagonist and my newest bookish bff to judge her, haha!

The same can be said of Rockford. He was perfect on his flaws and he had to back down on the classic heroes catch to have June.

perfection

Also, there were just so many funny quotes involving him. June really will be a wonderful professional on her career, haha! Instead of going on and on about how good the most-generous-Rockford is, I’ll allow June the honors:

“It’s you, isn’t it?” he [Rockford] asks, like I could possibly not be me and confirm my non-existence.

~*~

I haven’t seen a Rockford at the library so far as I know since I nearly killed one.

~*~

Maybe at least his dog will be happy to see me.

~*~

Oh, maybe I should clarify that Rockford wasn’t being sexist or anything. Just anti-human.

~*~

Making sure Rockford has moved out of the way so I don’t have to add “manslaughter of most generous Rockfrod” to my CV, I put the car in reverse.

~*~

He [Rockford] slides his phone into his pocket. “This is a coincidence.” I was thinking more like a cosmic joke, but okay.

~*~

Countless hours spent reading and watching my favorite romance stories, and I just can’t deal with it in real life.

~*~

And now, the mercy punch:

Rockford raises his eyebrows and rolls over, picking up his tablet. “Note to self,” he says, typing something on the screen. “Buy June more books.” I slap the book hard on the ground and tackle him, pinning him beneath me.

taylor swift dreaming.gif
and this is how you get the girl!

Needless to say that Rockford made it to My Bookish Boyfriend list, right?

What I liked about Penny’s characters is that they were all so real. Not even the most generous Rockford was forced. They were natural, funny, boring… Always exactly what they were supposed to be. I just wish I had spent more time with Blake. What a man…

he's really really hot

I think another book deserves to have him as a star. #sutilwish #please

Oh, I admit that there are some loose ends on this book, but nothing that bothered me. And you know what this means.

the earth is doomed

I really fell hard for this one.

Anyway, if you are a Jane Austen or Brontë fan, you just need to read this book. YOU HAVE TO.

5star

That’s it! Thanks so much for reading and, once again, thanks so much to Joy, for warming my heart with a lovely and perfect book ❤

Gods of Chaos, from Jen McConnel (Red Magic #2)

Hi, there! I promise, last post for today, haha! But let’s admit, I was owing a review for the second book in the Red Magic series, from Jen McConnel: Gods of Chaos! Also, I’d like to thank Chapter by Chapter again for providing me with this book in exchange for an honest review 🙂

gods of chaos.JPG
from my Instagram 😀

The Story

(Goodreads’ blurb)

The gods of chaos cannot be trusted.

Since battling her best friend, Darlena’s grip on Red Magic has been shaky. She heads to Scotland after the Winter Solstice in search of another Red Witch.

On a sightseeing excursion with girls from her hostel, Darlena arrives at The Vaults, a mysterious underground city beneath Edinburgh. But there is something there that make Darlena’s instincts go haywire, as she lets loose a defensive burst of Red Magic, putting everyone around her in danger.

If there was ever a time when Darlena needed the help of another Red witch, it was now. But beware the witch who wields Red Magic.

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

Do you remember when I said that Red Magic had so much potential because Lena had grew up a lot during the story? Well, forget it. As soon as I started reading Gods of Chaos, I saw that all the progress she made on the previous book had flew out of the window and she was back to being a whiny ungrateful child. Also, I hated the destiny of a particular character and that was the decisive point for my final rating. I like to brag that my reviews are as most analytical as I can get, but my ratings are personal and highly subjective, for good and evil. So, for me, this is a two stars book.

I’ll spare your eyes, as the narrative of Gods of Chaos follows the style on Daughter of Chaos: first person styled from Lena’s point of view only. I hated Lena and it didn’t get better on this volume, so there was nothing to do for it.

The plot was very good and even fuller of twists than the previous book. I really liked the scenarios and adventures that Lena had to endure in order to try to become a better Red witch. To be honest, I think the plot is the strongest point in this whole series, as it is what keeps the reader reading [haha] despite Lena’s existence. I was only bothered by a continuation error. On Daughter of Chaos, there is a part in which Lena switch places with a goddess, that shall remain unnamed due to spoilers. In said part, Lena mentions that she uses a Glamour to look like the goddess on an airport bathroom and distinctly says that she uses an invisibility spell right after that, to be able to do what she had to. And then we have a scene further in the series in which Lena wishes she knew how to become invisible to escape her parents. She doesn’t wish for to be able to be invisible at that particular time, she wishes she knew how to do it – and that she clearly knew how to do.

Anyway, the characters. I still think that Gods are portrayed much better than other regular people characters on Red Magic, but I liked human characters more than before. Seriously, everyone seems to evolve but Lena.

and none for gretchen weiners, bye.gif

But for sure the spotlight in Gods of Chaos all go to Marcus and Izzy. Marcus is another Red and Izzy is a Blue witch. Both of them are wonderful and I loved their addition to the series plot. Marcus even made it to My Bookish Boyfriends list!

applause

I wish I could say more about them, but I can’t think of anything that won’t give huge spoilers away, I’m sorry 😦

To be fair, Gods of Chaos would be a three stars book overall, but I can’t bring myself to put it any higher. I had to put up with Lena’s shit and a beloved characters death. I AM NOT MADE OF STEEL FOR GOD’S SAKE!

obama kicks door.gif

Overall, if you started this series, do keep going. Things get better, I promise. If anything, at least you will have the chance of meeting Marcus, a delicious bookish boyfriend with powers beyond any thought 😀

2star

That’s it, thanks for reading! And once again thank you to Chapter by Chapter for sending me this series!

Playing Defense, from Cate Cameron (Corrigan Falls Raiders #2)

Playing Defense banner tour.png

Hi, there! Welcome to a very special book review – and I’m not saying this only because our book star today is on blog tour, hosted by Chapter by Chapter. No, this is a soul-touching and warm book that definitely was one of my best young adult contemporary romances of all time! I’m talking about Playing Defense, second standalone book for Corrigan Falls Raiders series, from marvelous and brilliant Cate Cameron! ❤

playing defense.JPG
from my Instagram 🙂

The Story

Claudia is the kind of girl that has no time to fool around. She has a target and its name is Waterloo University; in order to go studying Engineering there, she must give her best on high school. And give her best didn’t include tutoring one of the stars of the local town hockey team, Chris Winslow.

But it happened. Because life isn’t fair.

Chris isn’t your typical gorilla hockey player. He’s relaxed, funny and easy-going, a real peace and love spirit in flesh. His dream is to become a professional hockey player, but one must be prepared for anything that life may reserve – that’s why he needs tutoring. Chris is failing at chemistry and functions and the only way to stay on his team and have a shot at an university instead of a community college is to have better marks.

But he couldn’t have know just how much fun chemistry and functions were when on Claudia’s hands.

When Claudia and Chris’ worlds collide, there’s no telling what may happen. The only certain that they got is that their tutoring deal definitely was one of the best deals of the world.

anigif_enhanced-buzz-5351-1389581734-11

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

I don’t have the words to start this review. When I signed up to participate in this blog tour, the possibility of being swept off my feet for this book didn’t even cross my mind. I was in for a cute and light high school romance and I’ve received so much more. This book is awesomeness in its purest form, a gift to the YA contemporary romance – a genre that I usually avoid at all costs. But not Playing Defense. This book had everything that I adore on a book: a powerful female (even if she doesn’t know it on the beginning; actions speak way more than words lol), a goofy and hot male (without being stupid or a jerk, may I add), switching point of views in the story, wonderful dialogues and real characters. Oh, and a cliffhanger plot! How could I want more? Also, there was a book reader character named Annalise and she sounds just like me in high school, for good and bad. Cameron warmed my heart and gave me a metaphorical hug with this book, so how could I rate it any less than 5 stars? If I could, I would give it all the stars in the world! (Damn Goodreads for not having a “Galaxy’s stars” rating after the 5th one!)

The narrative was first person styled and switched points of view between Claudia and Chris restoring my faith on this kind of narrative. I was enchanted by both characters during the whole book, so it worked for me while reading Playing Defense to have both POVs to compare. Chris for sure is the best male narrator of all times and he did made it to My Bookish Boyfriends list. And, for the first time in a very long while, I wished I could meet someone in real life that had his type of personality. But we’ll get there.

Now I must comment on Cameron’s writing style.

perfection.gif

Seriously, Cameron managed to turn an intense and a somehow dramatic novel into something light and funny without being silly or useless, you know? You get punched in your gut with all the emotions but you don’t mind, because Chris is so funny and Claudia is so awesome. Their minds are so distinct and yet so connected, they are random and stupid at times… They are teenagers with strong minds. Not overly mature, not whiny. PERFECT. And only a brilliant writing style can transmit all of that on first person narrated books.

taylor swift laying down on stage.gif
me and this book

The plot was simple, but of the anything-can-happen type, so I braced myself for all kinds of ends and twists. Good that I did that, haha! Playing Defense is not here to play [haha], it really gets to the readers and steals their hearts. Mine is missing still and I don’t know when it will return. The book had a tiny loose end, but nothing that bothered me terribly.

The characters were awesome. And the high irony in this is that they are actually working in the book to make themselves more awesome by trying to smooth their flaws as a group: the Sisterhood of Awesomeness, which has two sister boys. What can I say, it’s a very open minded group 😉 And honestly? I wish I could be part of it just to hear Chris say that he wants to be a sister because it makes him feel pretty.

playing defense promo image.jpg

This is the spirit of the sisterhood lol

Seriously, I laughed so hard reading this book that I had to wipe my eyes off several times, to catch my breath and see if more oxygen was already available in the room. I didn’t felt this way since Carry On.

miley smiling.gif

I’ll start with Claudia, as her POV starts the book: I didn’t expect to like her. I have a really hard time liking YA female protagonists because they tend to be too self-centered, whiny or simply dense, but I liked Claudia since page one. I should have seem what was coming, but I didn’t. She was immature in so many ways, but you could tell how hard she worked for anything in her life, how she cared about being a better person and not for the sake of others, but for her own. She grew up a lot in the book and she was scared because of that. Not once she stopped. Not even when she thought she had stopped. She hadn’t. I found myself a new bookish best friend to hang around with Integrity and I couldn’t be happier!

As for Chris, he is simply the best male narrator ever. He was an example of the perfect flawed guy, as he is so not perfect and still manages to look like he is without even trying. He had a great sense of humor, goofed around, was very smart [not as much intelligent, but definitely smart] and a prejudice kicker guy. I knew I was going to fall hard for him in the moment he insisted he was going to be a sister of the Sisterhood of Awesomeness and then I did fall hard for him when he told Oliver that no one would mess up with his boyfriend [Oliver] and get away with it. Oh, did I mention that he has an inner princess? He does.

tumblr_mvsng3jprB1sk6hd8o1_250

To be honest, I fell in love with all Claudia and Chris’ friends: Karen, Dawn, Tyler, Oliver, Annalise [yes, I was in the book #kidding], Karen’s sisters, their poetry teacher… Awesome people. Annalise, Claudia’s best friend, was the portrait of my high school self, for good and evil. I didn’t agree with some of her actions and I wouldn’t have done them, but her personality and her way to face the world was exactly how I behaved and felt on high school: always with my nose on books, living in other realities and really not minding the real world, as it sucked hard. I wish I could hug Annalise and tell her how much better our lives get when we start college/university life.

i'm going to hug you and you're going to take it.gif

The strongest point in this book, however, is the dialogical construction. Hm, maybe it’s a tie between Chris and the dialogical construction, but I took the liberty of selecting some of my favorite quotes and dialogues to illustrate my point:

“It was kind of scary, telling other people what words have power over you” – Claudia

~*~

Claudia: “We probably need more members, too.”

Chris: “Can I play?”

Claudia: “Did you catch the Sisterhood part?”

Chis: “Yeah, but…whatever. I figure I’m high enough on the ‘awesome’ to make up for being low on the ‘sister’.” (…)

Karen: “You’re a small-town hockey player, Chris! You’re supposed to just grunt and talk about ‘scoring’ with as many different subtexts as you can find. You should go get in a fight with someone, not sit here talking like you’re auditioning to replace Oprah.”

Chris: “When we’re speaking as sisters, I’d prefer it if you called me Topher.”

~*~

“It was Chris. Goofy, lazy Chris who was afraid of his mom and liked being a member of the sisterhood because it made him feel pretty.” – Claudia

~*~

Chris: Most people like me, you know. I’m likeable. That’s just a fact. So statistically, your mom will probably like me, too.”

Claudia: You can’t really use statistics like that. You can’t pretend we’re dealing with completely random variables.

Chris: Well, you lost me on that, but I think I can use statistics any way I want to. Who’s going to stop me?

Claudia: Reality.

Chris: Statistically unlikely.

~*~

Claudia: I really missed you.

Chris: I got that. I missed you, too.

Claudia: If you died, I’d be sorry we hadn’t had sex.

Chris: Wow. That’s… I can’t decide if I should tell you to stop thinking about me dying, or just keep my mouth shut and let you talk yourself into having sex with me.

Claudia: I don’t think I’m going to talk myself into it.

~*~

Seriously, just stop standing here and go grab this book to fangirl about it with me!! I’ll even leave the buying links bellow, so just GO. You need this book in your life.

About Cate Cameron, the Great

Cate Cameron grew up in the city but moved to the country in her mid-twenties and isn’t looking back. Most of her writing deals with people living and loving in small towns or right out in the sticks—when there aren’t entertainment options on every corner, other people get a lot more interesting!

She likes to write stories about real people struggling with real issues. YA, NA, or contemporary romance, her books are connected by their emphasis on subtle humor and characters who are trying to do the right thing, even when it would be a lot easier to do something wrong.

On blog updates and bookish boyfriends

Hi, there! So, as I said earlier, somethings have changed into my blog scheduling and I have a new posting calendar 😀

As my friend Audrey doesn’t seem to be coming back from her hiatus, we won’t have Match Made in Mondays posts for the time being 😦 To compensate that, I entered a meme that I’ve been meaning to for a long time, the Top 10 Tuesday. You know, in my own rebellious way.

Also, I entered my friend Mandy’s meme some time ago, the #DustOffYourBookshelf, and started to do book cover reveals, blitzes and tours. I only apply to show off books that interests me and I promise to never do a robot post, so don’t worry about that ❤ It’s just another way to know more new books from authors that aren’t that known yet and support them 😀

Another change lays on my Authors of my Heart ❤ posts. They will be monthly from now on – actually, I already did them monthly this month by accident, as I was travelling so much, haha! On the second Friday of the month, we have a book author. On the third Thursday, a manga author.

As I entered the Top 10 Tuesday meme, I will do some already planned Top 3 of my own and put this section on the fridge. It sounds a bit silly to keep both, haha! But of course I’ll keep doing random Top 3 book lists when I have nice themes of my own 🙂

Things that didn’t change: Manga and TBR of the Week sections + my Saturday tag day + my Must-have edition of the month posts. Also, I will keep bringing news from authors despite the book blitzes, tours and everything, just like before. We still also have my monthly hot releases section and the wrap up + book haul + tbr of the next month posts. Plus reviews as I finish reading books.

Something new that is to come is that I’ll start reviewing movies as well. I saw Austenland last week and I felt that I needed to share my bad experience. Also, my friend Vinnie encouraged me to write movie reviews as well, so I’ll give it a try. Thank you, dear!

Jeez, so many things. This is how my posting agenda looks like now:

Monday

my main day for blog tours / blitzes

Tuesday

Wednesday

Manga of the Week

Thursday

#DustOffYourBookShelves

Friday

Montly Hot New Releases

Update of my Bookish boyfriends acquired on the previous month

Which reminds me. The Bookish Boyfriends list. I just published the new page after FOREVER and you can check it here! 😀 It was about time, right?! Haha

I hope you enjoy my changes! If you have a suggestion or critic, just leave it on the comments or e-mail me and let’s talk 😀
