Matthew North waited ten years to heal from the devastating wounds inflicted by the man who abducted and abused him as a child. Living reclusively on a tropical island—with no company but his four cats—he merely avoids the lingering pain.

Wearing twisted ropes of mutilated skin on his back, Matt struggles with a profound hindrance—the scars that deaden his soul. However, on the night he meets lively Vedie Wilson, a local restaurant busboy who expresses his gender by wearing lipgloss and eyeliner along with his three-day beard, things change.

Gradually, Vedie and Mateo unite in friendship. Through a series of awkward encounters, the pair learns each other’s secrets. Vedie learns that an angelic face can front for a scarred soul. Matthew learns that the line between one’s masculine and feminine sides is blurred. Can they embrace the painful stories behind each other’s scars if they’re to find everlasting love? Or will surrendered love come to be yet another blemish on their souls?

Matt

“I ain’t a girl!”

This shout draws me back.

“Listen to me—I said that I ain’t a girl!” Vedie’s agitated voice echoing inside the men’s bathroom grabs my attention. “And even if I was, I wouldn’t wanna get groped by you!”

“Just because you aren’t in one of your hooker get-ups don’t mean you ain’t dat same whore who leaves here every night wanting to get fucked by the first guy you bump into!”

“Come on, Joey… you’re gettin’ outta hand here….”

Not only have I returned to the here and now, but I’m paying close attention—even straining to hear more of the fucked-up conversation coming from the men’s room.

“Get your damn paws off me! Lemme go!”

“Ahhh… finally, got my hands on the finest ass on the island. Hey, don’t be like dat, sweetheart! You know you want it….”

“Shit, man… stop it… no… I said no!”

The word no rings in my head.

No. I’d said it to Daniel a thousand times.

He’d never once listened.

And I’m not going to sit here and listen as some guy assaults Vedie, which is clearly what’s happening in the men’s room.

I leap to my feet and run into the bathroom, stopping short at the sight before me. Joey’s got Vedie bent over the sink with his shorts drooping around his ankles. The older man is simultaneously holding Vedie down by pressing on the back of his neck with one hand, and squeezing his ass with the other, all while wearing a smug expression of entitlement.

“For fuck’s sake, let the kid go!” I’m surprised at the ferocity of my bark.

Joey keeps on squeezing. “You had your turn playing with the whore—now it’s mine!”

the-author-panda-no-background

Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five nonpedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled young men and their relationships, and she believes that sex has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to Dreamspinner Press for providing her with an alternate place to stash her stories.

Mia is proud of her involvement with the Human Rights Campaign and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of marital equality. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.

  1. Hi Annelise.
I love the way you set up your blog post reviews. And I appreciate your honesty, even if my cover totally missed the mark with you. There is a funny story behind the cover… and so the final cover ended up being put together relatively quickly because we had to change the original image I had chosen. Here’s the problem with the original cover- out of all the cover models in the world, I chose the exact same guy as on the cover of Gilded Cage, and not only that, I chose the exact same pose!! It was the very same shot of him, but it was flipped, so he was looking at the camera from the opposite direction. Ugh! It was almost time for release when I realized it… my publisher Louis was cool about changing it but we did it rather quickly. In any case, I am looking forward to your review and I appreciate your efforts on my behalf!!

    • Woow, that was so unlucky, Mia! =O I’m really sorry for what happened, but I don’t blame you – both models on the In a Gilded Cage were SO HOT, haha! I’m also looking forward to your next works =D Thank you for stopping by!!
