Top 10 Tuesday: Most Unfortunate Character Names

Hi, there! I gave up on caring about which time I post what, as which really counts is the posting, right? Yup, I thought so, haha!

It’s Tuesday, so it’s Top 10 Tuesday day! This meme is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and my theme today is Most Unfortunate Character Names – yup, still a rebel and not doing the free theme, haha!

Before I start this list, I’d like to say that those are unfortunate names for me, because of something that happened in my life or someone that I met and didn’t like. It doesn’t mean the name is bad at all most of times 🙂

In no particular order, let’s begin:

 1) Severus Snape, from Harry Potter

Seriously? Can you just imagine the amount of bullying poor Snape suffered thanks to his name as a child and teen? (And this one is just bad, honestly)

 2) Seth Andrews, from The Hidden Life [review here]

Seth was one of my favorite males ever, but WHY DID HIS NAME HAD TO BE SETH? This is the name of the God of Death in the Egyptian mythology and, as a good geek, I’m too used to think of Seth as someone evil 😦 Also, this was the name that I picked for all the bad guys in my childish Barbie plays, so I really have a negative connection with it… If karma exists, I shall marry a Seth someday.

 3) Peter Stoller, from The Fall and Rise of Peter Stoller [review here]

Another case in which the name is not to blame. My family is from Germany, so I grew up with the German culture right beside me 24/7. One of the typical foods that my family loves is a sweet cake called Stollen, so I kept having ridiculous giggle attacks during the whole book – especially when I realized that Peter was just as interesting as the said sweet cake. Oh, and in my case, this is so not a compliment, haha!

 4) Rowan, from Rowan of Rin series

I even mentioned this on the review of the first book [here]: this character’s name reminds me of Ronan, from the Grand Chase game, so I keep imagining said Ronan in the place of my darling Rowan, haha!

 5) Eadlyn, from The Heir [review here]

Another case in which the name is just bad. I still don’t even know how to pronounce it! America for sure didn’t love her daughter to name her that way and I can totally understand why.

 6) Shelley, from What Lies Within [review here]

Back to the “names are not the culprits” section. Shelley is an okay name… If you don’t watch The Big Bang Theory. Sheldon Cooper’s mom calls him Shelly and more often than not someone would call Shelley on What Lies Within and I’d smirk alone. I know, I’m stupid LOL

 7) Gabriel, from Viscount’s Wager [review here]

I have a pretty messed up relationship with that name, as all the guys I ever met that had been given this name were jerks or assholes. So when my goddess Ava named one of her characters Gabriel and he also turned up to be a jerk and an asshole, I got depressed 😦

 8) Ned, from Bedding Lord Ned

Who in hell though it was a nice idea to nickname someone whose name is Edward with NED? Can someone please explain this logic to me? Besides being bad and totally random on my opinion, this name reminds me of a really stupid cartoon that I used to hate as a child, called Ned’s Newt. It was disgusting and I kept remembering it while reading this book – btw, the book is awesome, haha!

 9) Klaus Baudelaire, from A Series of Unfortunate Events

I save the best ones to the end, as my motive for this one is downward ridiculous. I actually like the name Klaus, it’s fancy and sounds manly, but I watched this soap opera when I was a child I’ve been sharing many childhood stories today, oops! called Chocolate with Pepper (a free translation from the Brazilian original title Chocolate com Pimenta) and the small city banker was called Count Klaus. What does this have to do with poor Klaus Baudelaire? Simple. Count Klaus was a poor ugly thing that was a sort of funny villain and was called an old goat by his poor fiancé.

Btw, this was one of the best soap operas that I have even seen, set in Brazil’s 1930’s. I wish I knew of a place that has it with English subtitles, you guys would laugh hard! Oh, and did I mentioned that the clothes were terrific? ❤

ANYWAY. Let’s drop the final bomb.

 10) Light Yagami, from Death Note

Yes, this is a manga and not really a book, but I needed to put this character here. You’d think that it’s bad enough that his name is “Light”. Nope, you haven’t seen it all. Japanese people have the habit of putting last names before given names on everything, so he is called Yagami Light a lot. Still don’t think that’s bad? Try spelling it out backwards. Not convinced at all? Here, let me help:

Top 10 Tuesday: Books that made me cry

Hi, there! Good AFTERNOON! I DID IT, IT IS ON TIME AND EARLIER! I DESERVE A BIG HIGH FIVE!

Ahem.

It’s Tuesday, so it’s Top 10 Tuesday day! This meme is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and my theme today is Books that Made me Cry because I can’t seem to follow everyone else and do the right theme of the week lol

So, I’d like to start this post by saying that I usually don’t cry reading. No, I haven’t got an heart of ice or anything like that. I just purposefully avoid reading books that I’m sure that will leave me utterly miserable and struggling to keep breathing between my sobs.

You see, when I was 14, I had a severe case of depression due family problems. One of the things that helped me going back on track and learning how to cope with my mind was reading – a pastime that has accompanied me since my birth, may I add. Ever since, I started to avoid obviously sad books like The Fault on Our Stars and such. It’s nothing personal, it is just one of the things I had to do to keep myself sane at the time and it is a habit that stuck up. I can deal with some depressing parts in a book, sad moments and deaths. But downward tragedy all the time hits too close to home, so no, thanks 🙂

All that being said, I still cry in books, a lot! And not only tears of sorrow, so I divided by ten books by type of crying – because I’m that much of an organizer freak 🙂

Sad tears

 1) The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak

This was the only purposeful sad book that I read knowing that it may end badly and I don’t regret it. I read it on 2007, when I was 12 or 13, and it was a recommendation of a sales’ guy from one of my favorite bookstores at the time, so I loved it. I don’t see myself re-reading it, though.

 2) The Last Olympian, by Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson #5)

You know, the series was ending, one of the most awesome characters died and I was feeling too overwhelmed by all the twists and awesomeness. And I still didn’t know that The Lost Hero was a kind of sequel to Percy Jackson series lol

 3) Daughter of Darkness, by L. J. Smith (Nightworld #2) [REVIEW HERE!]

Again, the fault is on the twist in the end. There isn’t anything downward sad about this book, but I thought the choice of the protagonists so tragic, brave and beautiful that it got me tearing up a bit for their destiny. Again, no deaths, no tragedy. I JUST FELT LIKE CRYING, I’M A REBEL!

4) All In With The Duke, by Ava March (Gambling On Love #1) [REVIEW HERE!]

Yes, you have read it correctly. My diva, my muse, made me cry. I just couldn’t see a happy ending for Max and Tristan in the first time that I read this book and I WAS DYING. Sometimes, I still cry near the end, haha!

5) Cambridge Fellows series, by Charlie Cochrane

Honestly? I don’t even know why I kept reading this series for so long. Despite being an historical gay romance series, the writing style wasn’t my cup of tea, the characters were pretty shallow and the drama got heavier and heavier. I lost count of how many times I was reading this as I was on my way to college and I started to weep in pure agony for the main couple. I just wanted to grab Charlie by her shoulders and shake her until she came back to her senses and stopped that madness, haha!

Fun fact about me: when I’m very sad, I grow quiet and simply won’t speak or do anything. I become numb. When I’m angry or frustrated to hell, I cry like there is no tomorrow. Therefore, these next books got more tears than the sad books did, haha!

 6) What Lies Within, by James Morrison [REVIEW HERE!]

I really liked this book, but I was so overwhelmed when I got to the end and there were some mysterious lose ends that I broke. I started crying and screaming and swearing, haha! After a calming shower, I couldn’t stop saying to whoever wanted to hear how good and awesome and badass this book is, haha! Strong emotions lol

7) The Heir, by Kiera Cass (The Selection #4) [REVIEW HERE!]

I almost began crying in frustration in the middle of chapter one, when I realized how Eadlyn and I wouldn’t get along. AT. ALL. And yet, Kiera Cass was forcing me to put up with the brat using my love for The Selection and for America as an excuse. Eadlyn drove me so mad that there were a lot of scenes that I read while tearing up in pure and simple frustration. I can’t wait for the nightmare to be over in The Crown…

8) Chasing Rainbows, by Linda Oaks (The Chasing Series #1) [REVIEW HERE!]

This book was Linda’s debut and my first from her. I was so surprised to see her beautiful writing style, so impressed to see how much Linda seemed to understand me and how much I connected with Addie, the main character, that I found myself emotional in like 60% of my reading time. I took notes of quotes and felt tears down my cheeks. Super cheesy and super true. Just read this book – or any of Linda’s works, really – and you will understand.

9) After Death, by Jacqueline E. Smith (Cemetery Tours #3) [REVIEW HERE!]

Jacqueline’s writing is a piece of art by itself, but there was a scene near the end of this book that was my undoing. It was so emotional, beautiful and meaningful that I started crying and wouldn’t stop, haha! I just wanted to hug my iPad and never let go 🙂

I searched my brain aka my goodreads read shelf for another case of perfection tears, but I think it only happened once so far.

10) CARRY ON, by Rainbow Rowell! [REVIEW HERE!]

This was the first and only time that I cried because of over perfection. And I’ve read my fair of books for someone of only 21. I scared my best friend, her maid and her mom with my crying crisis and book hangover after Carry On was over. I simply couldn’t, I needed more, that was too perfect to end. AND I SWEAR THAT THE END IS SWEET AND HAPPY AND CUTE! I’m the weird one that cries over… Perfection, as it seems.

I know, I know. That’s why I’ll just thank you for reading and stop writing now, haha!

I was a very good girl this month and read a total of 12 books; 10 books and 2 comics. I told you in my September’s wrap up that October was my month, haha! I also received some new books in exchange for honest reviews, but all in due time!

In shopping matters, October was practically non-existent – honestly, I didn’t even got out to the bookstore, you know? What Lies Within, from James Morris

Hello, lovelies! You are not hallucinating, I did write a review in the middle of the weekend! YASS! *taps on her own shoulder* I would like to start this post by apologizing to James Morris with all my heart, as I took so long to read his book. I’m sorry and I hope the wait was worthy because here we go!

The book in question today is What Lies Within, from James Morris. We met through a common friend (hi, Lindsey!) and he kindly sent me his book in exchange of an honest review. This is it!

The Story

Shelley is a girl that lost her mother at the age of 13 and still suffers with the loss three years later. She lives in a small city on the USA and plans on moving to UCLA on college. Her life could be described as very boring, if it weren’t for some incidents of anger, blackouts and a current nightmare. All in a good day of a teenager’s life, or so she thought.

One day, a boy approaches Shelley with an insane story about she being adopted and Shelley panics because it made sense. After running away from him and confronting her father about it, Shelley falls apart: who was she?

The more Shelley discovers, deeper the hole seems. Was she up to going until the end to find herself and sacrifice everything she thought she knew or would she stop and forget all about her birth parents?

The Analysis

Just remembering that these were my impressions and opinion while reading the book 🙂

The book started slow for me, I hated Shelley and it was a third person narrated book from her point of view only and solemnly, so I couldn’t take a break from her. Around chapter 5, I couldn’t let go of it anymore and I speed-read it until the end, that disappointed me beyond measures. I saw Shelley grow so much as person for it all to stop there? Once, Frank Herbert said that “There is no real ending. It’s just the place where you stop the story” and I find this to be very true, allowing happy endings to books, movies and such. But Morris COULDN’T HAVE STOPED WHERE HE DID, OMG! I felt betrayed as a reader with Shelley’s final decisions and I cried hard for about half an hour after I was finished. I even forgot to post on Goodreads that the review was coming soon (I always do that when I rate the book), haha! The book hangover has so strong that I dreamed with its end tonight and then I decided I needed to do this review fast because I couldn’t handle it, haha! Oh, by the way, I gave it four stars 🙂 I considered giving three, but the book did impress me, it was good while it lasted.

The narrative is amazing. Morris writes perfectly and his rhythm and pace were perfect. Description, scenarios, tempo, IT WAS ALL PERFECTION. I don’t have what to say about that. But you must be wondering why the book started slow for me if all of those aspects were so good. Excellent question, my dear reader! The thing is I had a problem with Shelley, the protagonist, since page 1. So, in the beginning, on the “normal” part of her life, I was bored to my bones and now it makes sense: Morris wants us to feel how insipid was her existence, how immature she was and that was very, very tiring. After the trigger of her brother, you dive hard on Morris’ world and you feel like you are a part of the scene even with Shelley being the center of the narrator all the time. What she doesn’t know, the narrator also doesn’t, what is not revealed to her, isn’t to us either. On a mystery book like this, I think this narrative form worked until the end, when it all got doomed, haha! This is a standalone book and Shelley finishes it with tons of unanswered questions. We don’t reach that part of her life were things get stabilized when the book ends, so you feel like a piece of your heart was ripped apart from you. I didn’t thought it a happy ending and one star was lost for it – my reviews are fair, my ratings are TOTALLY personal, sorry.

I would like to open a parentheses here to comment something. I think it is amazing when a man has the capacity of writing a first person book narrated or following a woman as protagonist. It is very hard and Morris was very good at doing it – Shelley’s small worries about herself, her thoughts, her acts… Honestly, congratulations, James! It was amazing!

The plot was very good and creative. Morris mixes teenage life with science fiction, adventure, a bit of suspense and lots of mystery and it worked out pretty well. It is amazing how everything is connected during the whole book, how so many small things from the beginning made sense in the end. The problem were the problems that surfaced in the middle to the end of the book, that Shelley never had a chance to solve. The best part of it is there we get the chance to feel Shelley’s personal grown during the unwind of the plot.

In character matters, Morris was very realistic, sometimes to the point of pain for the reader. He shows clearly how it is ourselves who decide if we will have a quiet or exciting existence, that what really matters are our choices and not what lies within (you see what I did there, don’t you? Haha!). My favorites were Shelley’s father and Winston. And, judge me, Kevin. Shelley’s father has a heart bigger than himself (which is a great deal, as she describes him as a bear) and showed me something about myself as well. There’s this scene where Shelley asks him why he likes city models and trains and miniatures in general and he says that those stuff, he can control; he didn’t have control over Shelley’s mother death and he couldn’t control Shelley herself on any way, as any other aspect of daily life, so that was his private paradise. And it was there when I noticed that I do the same thing playing The Sims 2 (yes, 2, as I hated 3, the Medieval one, the mobile one and 4 is more or less). Every time that my life is going through a path were I can’t be sure what’s going on or what’s next, I start playing it on my free time as much as I can. I have never realized it and it is so true. The illusion of control is comforting and you know that, at least on one little world, your will is the law. Winston also showed me something: sometimes we make excuses for our tastes for our own sanity and not for the sake of others. He liked to blow up things, ships on the water. For Shelley, he said it was for a movie and he pretended to want to record the explosions with his camera. During his own personal growth in the book, we can see that there is no movie, just the same desire for control without attracting attention of a possible need for therapy. By the way, I don’t understand how people are so afraid to go to therapy, it’s great and delicious for the soul .-.

Anyway, sorry for the major reflections, haha! This book made me think a lot, oops! Let’s get back to characters: I hated Shelley. I thought she was a bratty spoiled girl, I didn’t have any identification with her and her reaction to being adopted was the worse for me: selfish and self-centered, just hurting her father to no ends. I have very strong positions about adopted children because I have a case very close on the family and I can compare, you know? I understand Shelley wanting to know where she came from and who were the people that gave up on her, but nothing justifies what she did with her father. Nothing.

Overall, it was a good experience, I was meaning to read more science fiction and this was awesome. Thanks again to James Morris for trusting me with his work! I would highly recommend this book to people who likes a good mystery, psychological research, personal growth, adventure and a breathless end. Oh, but stay away if you, like me, can’t handle an end without a happily ever after, okay? I don’t regret reading this, but it got me hard, haha! I hope there is a sequel for What Lies Within someday ❤

5. Can you read and listen to music or are you the silent reader?

I really like to read while listening to music, but I read well in silence too – I prefer to have some kind of background noise, especially during afternoons, because I usually get sleepy, no matter what I’m reading, haha!

6.Which standalone/series do you wish had just one more book?

Omg, there’s so many! But I will go with The Tutor, from Bonnie Dee (review here!). It’s a standalone book and I really wished to see how the characters went with their lives after so many things, haha!

7. What is your go-to book?

Right now, it’s Chasing Rainbows (review here!), by Linda Oaks. It was a life-changing book and I will re-read it many times, I’m sure!

8. Who is your most owned author?

Just physical copies, I would say Emily Rodda (18 books). However, counting ebooks + paperbacks, I’d say Ava March, with 22 books.

9. What is your favorite read of 2015 so far?

I CAN’T CHOOSE! This year, I’ve read some exceptional books, like the complete series of Percy Jackson and the Asylum series books, besides Austenland from Shannon Hale (review here!), Viscount’s Wager by Ava March (review here!), The Tutor from Bonnie Dee and Chasing Rainbows by Linda Oaks. I can’t choose one, sorry, haha!

10. If you could visit one fictional place, where would it be and why?

The Middle Earth, from Lord of The Rings. I spent so many hours of my childhood pretending I was there that it would feel wrong to choose any other amazing place, haha!

11. What’s the book you had to put down before you could go on with it?

The Host, by Stephanie Meyer. I really hated it, haha!

1. Are you a morning person, or a night person?
   I’m definitely a night person, I do everything after dusk, haha!
2. What’s your favorite color of food?
   Yellow or red/brown, because I love massa and meat, haha!
3. Most read and reviewed genre?
   Romance, of all kinds: YA, Historical, Contemporary, Supernatural… Romance ❤
4. Favorite pastime (besides reading)?
   Eating, what is very sad, haha! Third thing on my list is sleeping. I’m basically a cat that learned to read.
5. What’s your dream city?
   A place in Brazil called Curitiba. I would give anything to live there 🙂
6. Favorite Olympic sport to watch?
   I like masculine water sports and volley. I love Brazil’s volley team, both masculine and feminine, and love to see all those worked up guys on bath suits, haha! *blushes*
7. Do you consider yourself an introvert or extrovert?
   I’m very extrovert, I talk to pretty much anyone and everything, like the walls.
8. What’s your favorite television show?
   Hard one! I watch too many things and never finish one. I would say Vampire Diaries and Suits, as everything seems to be getting cancelled nowadays…
9. What’s your dream job?
   Being paid to review books, because that’s pretty much what I do best 🙂
10. Who’s your favorite artist? (can be either musical or fine arts)
    I love miss Britney Spears and a band named Epica. If I had to spend the rest of my days listening to only two musical figures, they would be my choice ❤
11. How long have you had your blog, and what keeps you writing?
    My blog is a baby! I started it on Blogger in April and moved to WordPress on June, so this blog has only three months! I’m very selfish with my blog: what keeps me writing is my desire to do so. I always read a lot and I love talking about the books I read, but my offline friends couldn’t keep up with my passion, so I unleash it all here and on my bookstagram 🙂

Now, I’ll tell 22 random facts about me because I was nominated twice, it’s only fair 🙂

1. My favorite flowers are gardenias and hydrangeas – the bluish purple ones especially
2. I love sweets, especially my mom’s chocolate cake
3. I mentally date at least one boy from every book I read ;D
4. My Hogwarts house is Slytherin, according to Pottermore
5. I love notebooks and I have to control myself to not buy every cute one that crosses my way, haha!
6. I used to play with my books as a child, pretending they were dolls (and I had so many Barbies…)
7. My favorite heroine is Wonder Woman ❤
8. I like to collect movies and tv show seasons in DVD even with Netflix times
9. I’m really small, Hobbit sized (1,54m = 5’05”)
10. I have an issue with shoes. I own about 60 pairs and regret nothing, haha!
11. I wanted to be an Italian opera singer when I was a child
12. My favorite color is black ❤
13. I’m too expressive; every time I feel something, you can see it in my face
14. I’m often mistaken by a high school girl (and I’m 21 lol)
15. I love to try new kinds of food, specially if it is junk food
16. I own about 700 books and 800 mangas xD
17. I can’t eat salad to save my life
18. I graduate in Journalism school within 5 months and I’m freaking out, haha!
19. My favorite male actors are Ian Somerhalder, Matt Bomer and Misha Collins ❤
20. I love porcelain dolls and my favorite one plays The Swan Lake song (my friends always scream in terror when I touch it and the song plays for a bit, ugh *rolls eyes*)

Hello, guys! This has been an awesome week! Yesterday, 08/12, was my birthday and so many good things happened so far! I felt like my preparation days for turning 21 were awesome just like my birthday was, haha! It’s amazing how we can have a good time without a party 🙂

Anyway, I wanted to update you guys on which books I’ve been reading and receiving! I’m currently reading Chasing Rainbows, by Linda Oaks (and loving it, I’m on the middle of the book, haha!) and started The Need, by S. L. Hannah (thanks again to both of you, girls!). Chasing Rainbows review should be on the blog this Saturday, tops, and I hope I have The Need review by next wednesday, as the book will be oficcially out on Aug 25th 😀
