excerpt

And, of course, we have an excerpt!

About that time, a hissing noise filled the room. Everyone looked up and their gasps resounded. They were on their feet in record time as spiraling smoke twisted out of the vents and the room temperature hit hell-hot in a matter of seconds.

“Open this door!” Captive jiggled the knob. “Legend! Are you out there?”

Tole slammed his body against their only means of escape. “Let us out of here!”

They all joined him. Fists pounded in repetition. Everyone pleaded for help.

Gideon rushed to the eye-level window on the far wall. Jamming his fists against the panels, he cried out in agony as he glanced up at the billowing smoke above them. “Fire.”

“Aren’t you the smart one?” Umbrage ran his palms across the walls. “Hurry. See if we can find something to trigger a secret passageway.”

“You’ve watched too many movies,” Captive said.

As Gideon and Umbrage tried to find a way out, the air thickened with chemical-like vapors. They coughed, gagged, and suffered as they choked on fumes. Orange and red flames surrounded them. The blaze burned hotter.

“Keep your heads down! It’s another test!” Captive yelled.

In the middle of a coughing fit, Sin screamed, “Then we’re seconds away from failing!”

“Toughen up, sister. Even Legend’s games eventually find an end.” Captive stared into the fire and caught Gideon’s gaze. Perhaps it was then when Captive realized what Gideon had long since accepted.

The past few days had been necessary. They were vampires, damned to an eternal existence on earth but without a soul, their fate was sealed by fire. What they’d seen and heard, that was what awaited them if they didn’t follow Legend and save mankind. By saving the world, they spared themselves as well.

Everything their dad—Legend Sinclair—had shown them was foretelling in a sense, a grand exhibit of what they would endure if they didn’t survive. It served as inspiration, motivation to stay alive.

“Help!”  Tole hammered his fists against the door again. Like the others, he had revealed his greatest fear during Summer Assembly. Legend understood what specific triggers pushed each of them into panic mode.

Now, Tole faced his greatest demon—fire.

“Don’t do this!” He gasped, his voice wracked with fear. “I’ll do anything! Just let me out!” He collided with the door once more, but that door didn’t budge.

Gideon hurried to Sin, offering her limited protection, but comfort nonetheless. Diven and Umbrage reassured Tole while Griffin, Captive, and Saber promised to kill Legend given the opportunity. The more they threatened harm to the one who had turned them, the more swirling smoke filled the confined area.

“We were supposed to be stronger as a group,” Griffin said, coughing between syllables.

That much had been drilled in their heads and yet their current circumstances almost suggested the opposite. No one would gain the upper hand here.

Their hellish experience lasted several minutes, but it seemed like hours, maybe even days. There was no escape. They had one choice, an alternative that should’ve resounded as a simple unanimous decision. Instead, only five Legends emerged from the fire ready to dance with the fates and embrace their legacy with complete surrender.

The others were left behind.

EXCERPT

Chapter 1

Present Day

Give as Good as You Get

Via crept slowly along the back wall of the seedy motel, keeping her body out of the light. Quietly, she tucked her lucky silver cross in her shirt and reached to her side to pull her queb, a weapon made from wood, from her belt. With her other hand, she palmed her gun and released it from her side. She studied the two hoodlums with intense disdain as they eyed the mom and pop diner. Via knew the owners, and ate there often back when she was a dollar away from being homeless.

Gang vampires were a tricky bunch. They often traveled in groups, and more times than not, had two or more lookouts. Via glanced around the back alley in search of anything amiss, but was greeted with nothing. Turning back to the group assembling before her, she noted their clothing; the red and gold shirts of the vamp-bangers told Via two things. First, they were not generals in the gang, but mere henchmen. And second, they were stupid as fuck, as this was their rival’s territory. She’d had many encounters with both gangs, on account of them liking to kidnap and rape women; enjoying their screams as she gutted them like a fish with her queb.

The sound of glass shattering pulled her out of her thoughts. Now would be the time Via should pull her cell from her pocket and dial up her dhampir partner, Echo. Her stomach roiled at the thought, and though Austin believed it a good idea to partner a human with a trusted dhampir, Via wasn’t feeling the love. Using the excuse of having her hands full, she didn’t make the call and inched closer to the opening leading out to the main street. She darted across the street and damn near ninja dove into the window. Once she cleared the glass and debris, she smoothly rolled under the nearest table for cover.

Via was no fool, with vamps’ excellent hearing and sniffers, they’d easily discover her in the café, but she was banking on one thing to help her out. She took a quick peek at the bottom of her queb for reassurance. The stake-like rod was thick as a baton, the tip sharp as a razor’s edge, and it gave a faint glow from the rune placed on it by an enchantress. This particular rune obliterated Via’s human scent. A handy tool when hiding from vamps.

Like with any mission, sanctioned or unsanctioned, Via had a plan: attack, kill, and repeat, until all vamps were dead. Ordinarily, Echo had point and took out the lookouts. His superior vision and hearing had often given him and Via an advantage, but since he wasn’t with her, it’d be like old times.

Vamp number one, who she’d decided to call Lefty, since he was missing his right eye, slid to a halt in front of the broken window. Ambient light from the streetlights filtered into the small café, creating shadows across Lefty’s perplexed face. Via inched her gun up—loaded with silver nitrate bullets—and readied her queb just as the pale faced vamp turned. The first shot rang out like an explosion in the night. Seared flesh, blood, and pieces of Lefty’s remaining eye showered around Via.

Standing to take care of the second vamp sliding around the corner, she lost her balance in the blood and fell to the floor. In a second, she made the choice to drop the queb, and aim the weapon. To her surprise, instead of one vampire, there were now three. These were more than some run-of-the-mill gangbangers, breaking and entering. The one she’d aptly named Blue, for his intense electric blue eyes, held a few boxes in his hand, and not one of them had made their way to the cash register, or the wall safe.

Blue’s eyes widened at the sight of her. “Hey, baby.” His voice held a sickening slimy quality. He handed the boxes to Tyson, who she’d named Mike Tyson since they both had those stupid matching face tattoos. “Did you come to play?” Licking his lips, his eyes did a perusal of her body, taking time to linger on her breasts.

Slowly, Via stood and placed her empty hand on her hip while keeping her gun aimed. “Stop, in the name of the law.” None of the vamps spoke. The silence filled the room and Via tensed. Okay, so these guys didn’t like her joke.

The three vamps, Blue, Tyson and Shit Eater—no explanation for nickname needed—stared at her longer, before there was a blur of movement, and one of the three stooges knocked the gun from her hands. Next came a gut-crushing blow to her stomach. Bile rose in her throat as she hit the ground.

If Via lived to tell this story, she would say that in seconds she was up again ready and raring to take on the vamps—which would be a lie. Those who had called her hardheaded would be happy to know that too was a lie because as her skull hit the floor with a deafening crack. Via’s body refused to listen to her command to get the fuck up. Even with skill such as Via’s, taking on three vamps in the middle of the night, with no damned back up, was something akin to suicide.

A trilling start, right? *–* And just you wait until you read the interview that Inger, the author, did with Echo, ex-assassin for the Vampire Nation and true king of the Russian vampires 😀 Let’s see what he has to say about the vampire world??

Sinninginthedark_FB Banner.jpg

Inger Iversen: Thank you for being here with us today. Let’s jump right into this interview and start with explaining to the readers the difference between a blood born vampire, a made vampire and a dhampir.

Echo: As you know, most humans are misguided in their theories about my world. Most humans assume a vampire female is incapable of giving birth, however; that is not wholly true. A blood born vampire is born from a demon and is able to reproduce. However, turned vampires are unable to reproduce, as their wombs are barren and the undead cannot nurture life inside of their body. A male dhampir can reproduce with any fertile female.

II: Wow, that’s fascinating. So would it be safe for me to assume there’s an underworld out there most know nothing about?

Echo: Yes, and in more ways than one. Our world is kept secret from humans at the request of government officials. They do not want you to know that there are creatures of the night.

II: Okay, well I think some humans know that the government hides information from us. What about things like the cure for cancer and other deadly diseases?

Echo: Let me put it like this. My dhampir blood isn’t nearly as potent as the blood of a blood born vampire, and yet, I can heal broken bones, cure poisons, remedy genetic diseases and much more human and lore illness. Just imagine what the blood of a blood born vampire can do.

II: Amazing. I hope one day we are able to use vampire blood to help those in need. For my last question, I would like to ask you something personal. When you find your brother, what do you plan to do to him? As you told Via in Sinners in the Dark, please give detail.

Echo: Ha! Shall I spoil the end of a series for the readers? No, I won’t, but I will tell you this. When I capture my brother, his death will be so bloody and gruesome that readers will not sleep for many nights for fear of the monster I am.

II: Chilling, but Vasily deserves nothing but death for all the trouble he has wrought. Echo, thank you for sitting down with us today. Your time is most appreciated.

Echo: No problem. Via made me come.

applause

Thanks to Echo and Via, then, haha! And to Inger, that was nice enough to do the interview for us 😀

#DustOffYourBookShelves: The Queen of the Damned, from Anne Rice (The Vampire Chronicles #3)

Good night! Thursday is #DustOffYourBookshelf day over my blog and I officially give up on trying to post it on the mornings, haha! This is a meme hosted by my dear friend Mandy, from The Reading Diaries. Make sure to check her blog if you haven’t ❤

dust off your book shelf

Da Rulez:

Dust off your Bookshelf was originally created to share books that have been on my “to read pile” for a long time. Some so long I’ve forgotten that they are there, and have purchased duplicate copies. Each week I will share on my blog as well as Instagram a new title. Some may be newer and some so old I have forgotten they are there. I do have issues with buying books and never reading them. I’m hoping that by share them I will be motivated to read them. Plus it’s always fun to find new books hiding within the bookshelves. Feel free to join in and share on Instagram or your blog. Just let me know so I can check out your choice this week too. Just use #DustOffYourBookshelf

My chosen book

This time I thought of Queen of the Damned, from Anne Rice. I’ve read Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat in a roll, but it took me some time to be able to buy Queen of the Damned. When I got it, my hype with Anne Rice had descended to a human non-fangirl level and it has been sitting on my shelf for over 6 years now…

queen of the damned.JPG
from my Instagram 🙂

Goodreads’ blurb:

Did you ever wonder where all those mischievous vampires roaming the globe in Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles came from? In this, the third book in the series, we find out. That raucous rock-star vampire Lestat interrupts the 6,000-year slumber of the mama of all bloodsuckers, Akasha, Queen of the Damned.

Akasha was once the queen of the Nile (she has a bit in common with the Egyptian goddess Isis), and it’s unwise to rile her now that she’s had 60 centuries of practice being undead. She is so peeved about male violence that she might just have to kill most of them. And she has her eye on handsome Lestat with other ideas as well.

Now it is condemned to wait the good will of my book jar-box or a book club reading, oops!

That’s it, thanks for reading!

Book author: L. J. Smith

Hi, there! Welcome to my now monthly Authors of my Heart ❤ section! As last week we had a manga author, today we will have a book author 🙂 Who? L. J. Smith!

l. j. smith.jpg

I haven’t read as many books from her as I’d like, but this is the brilliant mind behind the creation of Damon Salvatore. It was necessary to bring her to this section asap!

damon confident smile.gif

I’ve met L. J. Smith on 2009, when The Vampire Diaries was brought to Brazil and the tv show was beginning. I’ve devoured all volumes like crazy, already madly in love with Damon, and then I started to watch the show and I was struck for life.

he's really really hot

I’ve bought the first volume of the Night World series compilation on the same year, but as I have a problem with physically big books, I postponed reading it until last December. Oh boy, I didn’t know what I was missing. Then, I decided that Smith was an auto-buy author, as I’m in love with her writing style ❤

Here you can see both series:

The Vampire Diaries series has captured the hearts and imaginations of hundreds of thousands of fans-and the new CW show that it inspired promises to introduce millions more to the chills, thrills and star-crossed love that has captivated so many readers. In The Awakening, the first volume of this bestselling series, Elena Gilbert is a golden girl used to getting anything that she wants, particularly when it comes to attracting guys. That is until she meets handsome, haunted Stefan, who struggles to resist her because of his dark secret: Stefan is a vampire. Stefan is torn by guilt from his past and living with the threat of his dark, dangerous vampire brother, Damon s return. Soon Elena finds herself in a love triangle between two vampire brothers and it could turn deadly.

Daughters of Darkness, from L. J. Smith (Night World #2)

Hi, there! Ooh, it’s so late, but I don’t care, I delayed this review for too much time now 😦 Hope you had an amazing Sunday!

Today I’ll review the second book from the Night World series, Daughters of Darkness, from L. J. Smith ❤ Spoiler alert: it’s a big five stars book!

IMG_7132
from my Instagram! 😀

The Story

Rowan, Kestrel, and Jade know that they are taking a path of no return when they flee their home. The three sisters are well aware of all the risks and sacrifices involved, but anything in the human world is better than to live in an eternal bubble without any real living.

What they didn’t expect was to have a nosy neighbor.

Mary-Lynnette is a loner, a creature of the night. The stars are her best friends, along with her brother Mark. Or so she thought, until meeting her three new and inhumanly beautiful neighbors. The girls seem to be nice enough despite all oddities surrounding their family, but can Mary-Lynnette handle with their older brother…?

Ash knew he was doomed in the moment he laid eyes on Mary-Lynnette. Once, he had heard from a cousin how he would fall hard for his soul mate, but never believed in such crap. He was a man in a mission and Mary-Lynnette couldn’t be related to his difficulties in taking his sisters back home.

Or could she?

anigif_enhanced-buzz-5351-1389581734-11

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

OMG, WHY DID I TAKE SO DAMN LONG TO READ THIS SERIES?! IT’S EVEN BETTER THAN THE VAMPIRE DIARIES! (Just don’t tell this to television guys, they will screw this up, haha!). I loved everything aspect of this book and can’t wait to finish Spellbinder, the next book 🙂 Ash was perfection since Secret Vampire, but in this one is where I fell hard for him… *sighs in pure love* I’ll try to do a good job here, but it is so damn difficult when all I feel like doing is fangirling non-stop about Ash, haha!

tumblr_m4rln8lfAV1roknfw

Ahem.

The narrative was my favorite one: third person with alternating points of view. I wish there were more parts under Ash’s POV, but I understand that not knowing much about him it’s part of his charm. Putting more parts under his view would have bared him too much for the reader and all, haha! But one can dream, right? 😉

The plot wasn’t overly complicated and quite predictable, but there is a little twist in the end that caught me off guard and this was awesome ❤ I don’t really mind simple plots as long as they are well executed and hold my attention while I read. I can even know how it all will end, but I always get curious to see how the outcome shall arrive, haha! My point? There is no lost trip for me, haha!

anigif_enhanced-buzz-21690-1387224741-22

The characters are the high point in this book. Rowan, Kestrel and Jade are unique and each represent a type of person: Rowan is gentle and naïve despite being the oldest; Kestrel is ruthless and savage; and Jade is dreamy and brave. They complement each other in such a perfect way! Mark was also a pleasant enough character and I really liked Jeremy despite everything. And, of course, there is their older brother Ash, but never fear, I’ll get to him. I really liked Mary-Lynnette. She was such a strong heroine for a Young Adult book but without losing her teenager spirit. I could have never made her final decision on the end of the book and I will admire her for this till the world ends.

tumblr_lkb58nwS2L1qchnjd

Sorry, I had to insert this here, haha!

Now, let’s go to Ash. Oh, Ash. He is the lost cousin of Damon Salvatore, I assure you. The difference between them is that Damon is actually a pretty nice guy trying to fool people into believing that he is a demon and Ash is actually a demon trying to fool people into believing that he is a pretty nice guy, haha! 😉 Mary-Lynnette described him as a royal cat with ever-changing eye colors and this is the most accurate description ever. Ash has his own pace for everything (cof except when it comes to Mary-Lynnette cof) and never has a permanent eye color – not even in his full vampire form. The strange thing about him is that he is both intelligent and not stubborn at all. He sees something that he is doing wrong and he promptly fixes it instead of insisting that he is right. Not many males have this blessed ability, haha!

anigif_enhanced-buzz-9646-1387064448-0

I really think that L. J. Smith rocked in the Night World series so far and dare to say that those books are a must-read if you love Y&A, romance, Vampires, Witches, Werewolves and really cool humans, haha!

5star

That’s it! Thanks for reading this review and I hope to finish Spellbinder soon, haha! Have you read the Night World series?

Secret Vampire, from L. J. Smith (Night World #1)

Good night and hello again! I’m sorry for the weird timing of my posts lately, it’s just that I’m at my uncle’s place and I don’t have my own computer, haha! I had left some programed posts, but apparently, not enough, oops! Now I’m depending of the good will of my relatives to have a computer – so far, my older cousin and my dad, for that matter. This post is being written from my dad’s laptop, thanks, dad!

Anyway, I’m here to talk about Secret Vampire, the first book in the Night World series, by L. J. Smith! Let’s go 😀

Anybody human, that is.

Can Poppy survive the Night World?

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

I had the mass-market paperback edition with the three first books in one for a while now, but only this year I brought myself to read it. And you know what? THIS BOOK WAS AWESOME! I’ve read it on Christmas, literally. I began it on the morning of December 25th and finished it at night, haha! But I don’t know why I was hesitant to read it, as I love The Vampire Diaries books and Night World follows a very similar style of writing and interpersonal relationships between characters. Mysteries of life, right? Haha! Five stars with pride!

As I’ve read The Vampire Diaries in high school (a re-read is in order in 2016), and on a translated version into my native language, I didn’t remember how fluid and nice was Smith’s narrative. It was a good surprise, as my Night World collection is in English. Smith did the narrative in my favorite way: third person with alternating points of view between Poppy, James and Phil, Poppy’s twin brother. AWESOME. BRILLIANT. I LOVED IT.

Ahem. Ok, I’m under control again.

The plot wasn’t simple, but not that complex either. There were some mysteries, some uncertainties and twists, it was cool. The end was predictable, but in a good way, in my opinion. I hate books with unhappy endings, judge me, haha! This childhood friendship that grows into something more plus the supernatural element worked very well for me and if you like those two elements combined in a romance, just read Secret Vampire ❤

The characters were a blast. But who is surprised, as this is the same mind that brought us this:

(if you are new here, just to clarify: I obssess over three general things in life: books, Ava March and Damon Salvatore, LOL)

But back to character’s analysis. I loved Poppy! I usually hate female heroines from young adult books, but she surprised me due to the reality of her situation: a) she dealt in a very realistic way with her cancer discovery even before she learned about James condition; b) she didn’t suffer of instantaneous love, James grew up with her, so their connection made sense and it was very cute; c) she was a strong woman with the worries of a teenager, so she had her moments of bravery and then broke down because of silly things. I could see my 16 year old self in Poppy and that was very nice, haha!

Now, the boys. OH, THE BOYS. I love Smith’s boys, haha! I fell in love with James and his je ne se qua air in scene one and he only made me love him more in the end, haha! He and Poppy had the best dialogues ever, I laughed hard in several parts. They just had this connection, I guess. I also liked Phil, Poppy’s brother. He could be a little dense at times, but sounded so cool and beautiful, haha! I wouldn’t mind dating him at all. And there is Ash. I wanted to hit him with a hard rock while I kissed him. Does this even makes sense? Hahaha!

Ash’s personality reminded me a lot of Damon’s, only that he fools people into believing that he is actually nice, while Damon takes the other way around. I can’t wait to see more of Ash and his schemes on Daughters of Darkness, the second book in the Night World series and my current read. Well, one of my current reads, haha!

Bonus point: besides the boys, that are hotness all over in the book, I thought that Smith’s way of portraying cancer was awesome. Even with the supernatural element on it, the theme is not spoken of lightly, as a mere excuse for the vampire romance. I loved it 🙂

5star

That’s it, thanks for reading! I loved reading and reviewing this book, haha! Have you already read Night World?

TOP 3: M/M Authors

Hello again! I’d like to start this post with two warnings: I’ll talk about homosexual books that have explicit sex scenes between two men in this post and I am an extra huge fan of Ava March (which you already know if you follow me for a while or just read this post). If you don’t like this kind of genre or this author, you better stop reading 🙂

This TOP 3 theme is my three favorite authors that write mature romances involving homosexual males. And here they are:

  1. Summer Devon & Bonnie Dee

They write together most of the time, but they also release books separately. I’ll talk about them as a team because I think it is only fair, haha! Their stories tend to be dark, be aware – it generally ends with happy endings (haha), but the things that the couple have to go through until there are very heavy. Usually, the plot involves guilt in at least one of the sides of the relationship and the characters use to be broken before they find their true loved ones. My favorite aspects of their work involve that, as well: they can heal through love and their relationships are intense, passionate; there’s not a hint of vulgarity, just pure carnal passion. Honestly, I hate to read vulgar sex scenes (but you already know that after my review for The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty, lol). I have to fell at least a boner between the characters to find it nice. Otherwise, I think it’s not necessary to write it down, just mention it and we’re done. Bonnie and Summer have this care, they really capture their readers through the love that they describe.

From them, I’ve read The Gentleman and The Rogue, Seducing Stephen, The Nobleman and the Spy (my all-time favorite <3) and House of Mirrors (also known as Sin and The Preacher’s Son). From Summer, I’ve read The Gentleman and The Lamplighter earlier this year and from Bonnie, I’ve read The Tutor (review here!).

All of those books are on the 19th century and wonderful ❤ It’s on my 2016 plans to review The Nobleman and The Spy, but I better not to make any promises, haha!

  1. J. L. Langley

She was my first into this world. I had a special interest in homosexual romances since I’ve read a manga called Gravitation, that was yaoi. Now I think myself as a little naïve, but I didn’t think there was m/m books, as I only knew mangas. So, this one day in 2012, there was I, browsing Goodreads, when I stumbled on her, more precisely in a book called The Tin Star. When I saw what the book was about, I ran to my father and asked him to buy the eBook for me, because I really needed it. After that, I’ve read one after the other and discovered a whole new world.

And didn’t even need to ask you guys, LOL.

So far, I’ve read all the books she has released and am very anxious to the next one, which Langley is currently working on, called Without Secrets. In her portfolio, you can find two different cowboy series (Ranch and Innamorati), a werewolf series (With or Without) and a kind of steapmunk series, set in the future with a Regency Society in each planet (Sci-Regency). Oh, and her series are sequential – you have to read it in the right order to get many parts 🙂 My favorite books from her are The Tin Star, that was my first, His Convenient Husband, With Caution, With Abandon and My Regelence Rake.

  1. Ava March

IMG_4210

Big surprise, right? Haha! I met Ava shortly after Langley and, in the first book, she had me (I made a really big post about our literary meeting here). I also read all her works so far, including her new book that’s coming out March of 2016, Convincing The Secretary (review here!). Ava likes to write collections and I love her for it because I have a hard time with book endings and knowing that it has brothers always calms me down, haha! She currently has six series, four already finished. They are:

There are also other two single books (From Afar and Beyond Reckless) and a short story (Twas the Night). All of them are written in the Regency Society and are amazing, but even with Ava (by the way, she’s a sweetie!), I pick favorites. They are, in this order: All In With The Duke, Thief, His Client, From Afar, Object of His Desire and Convincing Leopold. I think the most important message on her books is that even powerful people need to love and to be loved; that no one can be happy alone forever. I explain this point better at All In With The Duke’s review, haha!

Oh, she also points out how it’s important for a good relationship to have fluid and honest communication on both ends 🙂

That’s it, guys! Thanks for reading and I hope I have made good suggestions and that you can come to love those authors as I do ❤ Do you read m/m romances too?
