Murder Madness Such sweet Sadness review banner NEW.jpg

Hi, there! Today I bring you a review for the second book in the Kiss Kill Love Him Still series, from goddesses Jamie Blair & Dawn Rae Miller, Murder Madness Such Sweet Sadness šŸ˜€ After a lot of begging on my part (I’m just kidding), YA Bound Book Tours was awesome enough to give me a copy in exchange for an honest review, haha! After my undying love for the first, I knew the second would be just as a blast and I wasn’t disappointed, haha!

Haddie needs to know what happened to the only boy she truly loved to this day. Livie is hell bent on going until the bottle of Jackson’s lies and find out who really was her childhood boyfriend.

The game keeps going, the clock keeps ticking. Will they find out the culprit before The Fifth leaks any more secrets?

the analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader šŸ™‚

I WAS SO GRATEFUL THAT I HAD BOOK TWO WITH ME WHEN I FINISHED KISS KILL LOVE HIM STILL! But I never thought I’d be left hanging and dying once again at its end… And I did. Now I have to wait until OCTOBER for book 3, omg!! I could seriously cry… I may have seriously cried at that information, haha!

Just as the first, Murder Madness Such Sweet Sadness had an explosive plot (almost literally), awesome characters, a mind-blowing end, a beautiful cover and a killer (haha) title! It would be impossible for me to rate it anything less than 5 stars!

The narrative followed the previous book pattern: it was first person with switching points of view between the four girls. And, once again, despite the whole extra insight and info to work with, I STILL AM NOT SURE OF THE IDENTITY OF THE KILLER! =O I NEED TO KNOW, OMG!

tumblr_mgu8ivYUlt1qmn01to1_500

I really like Blair and Miller’s writing style, they make each character sound unique and necessary each time they are in scene ā¤ We got to see more of old characters, we met new ones… It was a rollercoaster from page 1 to 246, haha!

The plot was once again perfectly planned and executed, with the right amount of solved and new mysteries + twists for good and bad. I’m not a big fan of cliff hanger ends, but I made an exception to Murder Madness Such Sweet Sadness, haha! Once again, it was the strongest asset of the book. Plus, this title is amazing ā¤

tumblr_mzpkp5jiVj1rb4ssdo1_500

The characters had a wonderful development, especially Reggie and Val. Reggie changed her life completely and Val was forced to face several of her fears, which left a huge impact on her. Haddie also grew up, but not as much as I’d have liked. But maybe on the next book, right? Haha! Now, Livie… Livie was a disappointment. She still only cares about herself and her life, so no growing up was felt here 😦 It is still hard for me to like her as I do the other three girls, but she’s not completely awful yet, haha!

This equation is still true in my head:

livie kiss kill love him still

Also, can I just say how afraid I am of Haddie’s father and Livie’s mom? Because THEY FREAK THE HELL OUT OF ME, OMG! And they are included on my suspects’ list, as they don’t help themselves, hunf.

Blair and Miller once again nailed the art of showing the daily life and transition of people leaving teenage and entering adulthood. They portray all the feelings, insecurities and problems we have on such age and add a murder to the mix. I still think it sounds a lot like Pretty Little Liars, but not in a bad way or completely copy cat way. Just in an essence way?

jennifer aniston rachel friends thinking nodding

Overall, if you like mystery, YA, awesome characters and writing and macabre stories, you have to start reading Kiss Kill Love Him Still series and start the countdown to October with me, haha!

Hi, there! Welcome to my now monthly Authors of my Heart ā¤ section! As last week we had a manga author, today we will have a book author šŸ™‚ Who? L. J. Smith!

l. j. smith.jpg

I haven’t read as many books from her as I’d like, but this is the brilliant mind behind the creation of Damon Salvatore. It was necessary to bring her to this section asap!

damon confident smile.gif

I’ve met L. J. Smith on 2009, when The Vampire Diaries was brought to Brazil and the tv show was beginning. I’ve devoured all volumes like crazy, already madly in love with Damon, and then I started to watch the show and I was struck for life.

he's really really hot

I’ve bought the first volume of the Night World series compilation on the same year, but as I have a problem with physically big books, I postponed reading it until last December. Oh boy, I didn’t know what I was missing. Then, I decided that Smith was an auto-buy author, as I’m in love with her writing style ā¤

Here you can see both series:

The Characters Book Tag!

Hi, there! Good afternoon, hope you’re having a great Saturday šŸ™‚ Saturday is book tag day here on the blog and my adorable friend Kim, from The Spines Breaker, tagged me on The Characters Book Tag! šŸ˜€ Thank you, Kim! I love all the tags you do, haha! Don’t forget to check out her blog, is amazing!! ā¤

You can check the reviews for most books mentioned on this post by clicking on their respective titles. Except for The Crown, in which the link leads you to a nightmarish book cover.

Who is the best kick-ass character?

All time? DAMON SALVATORE. ALWAYS. FOREVER. In case you live in another dimension and don’t know who I’m talking about, he is from The Vampire Diaries series šŸ™‚

12357_492155580833640_1022153505_n
I can’t even with this man.

Which character do you most dislike?

Hmm… That’s a tough one. I think I’ll have to go with Bella Swan, from Twilight. I just hate her so much, haha!

2BFF8AE2E2FEA21E2AA8F3095CAA

If you could date any fictional character, who would it be and why?

I hate to sound repetitive, but it will always be Damon.

tumblr_mdlei5YeIp1r4ud2fo1_250

If you could change a character in any way, what would it be?

I would change Clara’s denseness on Shearwater, Part One, from Derek Murphy (a.k.a. D. S. Murphy). Honestly, that girl drove me nuts until she found out she was a freaking mermaid, haha!

IMG_7693

What character made all the wrong choices and didn’t add anything to the book?

Eadlyn. I apologize to all the fans of The Heir, but I hated Eadlyn too much, haha!

IMG_3504

Besides, the cover for The Crown is giving me nightmares.

Which character was the best villain whom you love to hate?

Ash, from Secret Vampire and Daughters of Darkness. This guy is trash, but oh-so-beautiful trash… I swear he is Damon’s lost cousin, haha!

IMG_7132

Favorite sidekick character with the most heart?

Cash, from Stripped with the Vampire ā¤ That guy just ruled sidekicking, haha!

IMG_6826

What is your favorite fictional romantic relationship?

I also hate to sound repetitive here, but my favorite couple ever will always be Max and Tristan, from All In With The Duke ā¤ Or they shall be until Ava March outdoes herself again, haha!

ec83452d22b2321e10c19eff22ccc1ea

What character did you think was the strongest?

From my recent reads, I’d say Whyborne, from Widdershins. He faced many fears in the book and resisted many temptations. He is a true hero ā¤

IMG_7613

Best protagonist?

I didn’t finish the book yet, but I already have a new chosen one: Integrity, from Gifted Thief. HONESTLY, THIS GIRL.

tumblr_mb641bl1iz1r1guvio1_500

I am in love. Review to come real soon, as I’m almost finished, haha! [UPDATE: review here!]

giftedthiefpic

Who do you tag?

Oh, boy. I’m lazy, haha! But I tag…

Jess, from Mud & Stars

Victoria, from Addlepates and Book Nerds

Mandy, from The Reading Diaries

Abby, from To Infinity and The Bookshop

That’s it, thanks for reading! Everyone is free to do or not to do this tag šŸ˜€ If you want to do it, feel free to say that I have tagged you ā¤

The Story

Clara is regular 15-year-old teenager living in Arizona. Her dream is to become a famous singer someday and she already kicks asses in her school with this talent. On the night of her presentation, her parents suffer a car accident and die, shattering Clara’s reality.

Clara’s mother apparently had had her share of secrets, as Clara sees herself being shipped to Ireland, into the arms of a grandfather she didn’t even know she had until now. As she hangs around the small city that she now had to call home, more mysteries come to light. Her grandmother ran away and a priest disappeared. Her mother ran away after a town boy died. A mysterious note appears pinned to Clara’s front door.

And adding to all this turmoil, there was Sebastian, the other new boy in town. He was way different than anyone Clara had ever met, with this aura of perfection around him. Moreover, he seemed to know exactly what was going on and purposefully hiding it from Clara.

Not for long. Clara would get him good.

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader šŸ™‚

When I was a child, I wanted to grow up and become a mermaid. Like when you want to be a doctor or teacher, I thought I could be a mermaid. I learned how to swim very early in life and it was the only sport that I ever kicked ass in school – I guess, in a way, I became a mermaid, haha! So it was only natural for me to show interest on Derek’s cause and, of course, to read a mermaid themed book.

4d18a53b3a110d6a8182efd06db041f6.gif

Actually, I don’t know how this is only my second mermaid book in my life (the other one was Of Poseidon, from Anna Banks). Anyway, I was enchanted! Murphy’s writing was so fluid and easy to follow; Clara was such a nice heroine… I was hooked since page one! It’s a shame that I couldn’t get over some small problems during the story, so I gave it four stars šŸ™‚

The narrative style was first person from Clara’s point of view. It’s not my favorite style, but it worked, as Clara has many mysteries in her hands. Her awareness of the world helps to maintain the wonder that she feels in Ireland and every time she discovers something knew or gets an answer. Thankfully, I also didn’t develop extreme personal problems with her, so we’re cool, haha! I still think it would be nice to see things through Sebastian’s eyes, but I can survive if it never happens šŸ™‚

The plot was something else! Despite being pretty obvious since the beginning of Clara’s changes that she is a mermaid (or merrow, as Murphy describes Clara’s kind in special), all the other mysteries surrounding her were downright maddening. You ached to have answers just like Clara, haha! I’m still on my toes to know how this is going to end, but so far, so wonderful. At this point, it is useless to talk about loose ends, as part two isn’t here yet šŸ™‚

tumblr_nff5xlWpi31qeclafo1_500
me waiting for part 2 ā¤

There were a few small things that bothered me in the plot. First is that I saw it all coming with the mermaids and stuff. Usually, this doesn’t bother me, but as Clara was so slow, it got old fast. Second is that I don’t think a love triangle was necessary in this book, so I got really unmotivated to see that one is forming; to me, it sounded forced, specially after everything that Clara and Sebastian went through together. And the third thing is a bit stupid, but it’s there nevertheless: Clara’s grandpa’s cat hated her when she arrived and started to like her overnight, without any more explanations. This bipolar change of scenarios had me rolling my eyes a bit. I told it was stupid, sorry ^^ā€

Now, the characters. I surprisingly have no hard feelings for Clara. She pissed me of at times, but she never did something too stupid, not on my opinion. She makes mistakes on the same percentage of all of us, haha! At the same time, the things I had against her were part of the reason why this isn’t a full five stars book for me. Clara says she’s sarcastic and have a morbid sense of humor since the beginning of the book, but 189 pages later I’m still looking for a significant number of remarks to prove her true to her word. She wasn’t a stupid empty-minded girl, but trust me, she is so not sarcastic. Not even inside her own head, the place where we spent all the story in. Another thing was that she posed as a strong female (and really was one in several scenes), but anyone could make up her mind. It was SO ANNOYING!

tumblr_inline_n31vc8tyDZ1sohk3w.gif

Hear us, Clara? More strength of mind, if you will. And, to close my complains on her, I have to point out that she was too slow. Honestly, I think Murphy got too heavy on the ā€œI don’t know who I amā€ thing. It’s okay to have some moments, to doubt yourself in such a different situation from what you’re used to, but this was too much for me. Clara was too dense to figure out that she is a mermaid for my tastes. After she found out, I almost thrown my hands to the heavens and my problems with her pratically almost over, haha!

Now, I also own her some appreciation. Clara wasn’t an over-power character. She has gifts and obviously is special, even among other merrows, but she didn’t go and stopped the world with her powers; she’s training. It may sound a simple thing, but I was really afraid that she would become a bitch-op kind like this:

Her-insults-expertly-executed

Not the case at all!

And then there was Sebastian. He strongly reminded me of Stefan Salvatore, from The Vampire Diaries. He is a peaceful merman, but too scared of all the consequences of the world. I’m not saying that he should just throw his life in the garbage because he met a girl (and I loved him for not doing so), but this is rare. On the other side, we had Ethan, a. k. a. Sebastian’s Damon Salvatore. They are not brothers, this is a pure matter of personalities. Ethan seems to be a good boy on the inside, but I didn’t really liked him. Which, thinking better, is odd, as I usually have a thing for bad guys… Oh, well. Sebastian is different from my regular type of guy, but I’m more in love with him than Clara is, haha!

Oh, another strong point of this book: there is no insta-love, something way too current on young adult novels. Until this moment, I’m not sure how Clara really feels about Sebastian and I’m good with it šŸ™‚

To close the character’s section, I’d like to talk about Rosin and Clara’s friends. I don’t know what happens with this girl Rosin, but I felt that she disappeared after a while, like in vanishing style. Allf of her existence is a bit weird, actually. Maybe we understand more about her on the next part, but so far I feel like she was a throw character in the plot, without any real relevance or enough evilness to justify her part. As to Clara’s friends, I loved both! I think they were good sidekicks, even being in the dark regarding her real self.

Overall, I loved the way Murphy has built his mermaid world and the way he used Ireland’s mythology and legends šŸ™‚ It’s one of the strongest points of the book and you feel like you need to know it all because it is that cool, haha! The romantic element also really pleased me, despite everything ā¤ If you like young adult novels and mermaids, please, just read this one. You won’t regret it!

4star

That’s it, haha! Thanks for reading šŸ˜€ Oh, there is another thing about this book: Derek is hosting a huge mermaid giveaway to celebrate the release of the book, on January 26th, and you can find out how to win awesome mermaid goodies here šŸ˜€

Daughters of Darkness, from L. J. Smith (Night World #2)

Hi, there! Ooh, it’s so late, but I don’t care, I delayed this review for too much time now 😦 Hope you had an amazing Sunday!

Today I’ll review the second book from the Night World series, Daughters of Darkness, from L. J. Smith ā¤ Spoiler alert: it’s a big five stars book!

IMG_7132
from my Instagram! šŸ˜€

The Story

Rowan, Kestrel, and Jade know that they are taking a path of no return when they flee their home. The three sisters are well aware of all the risks and sacrifices involved, but anything in the human world is better than to live in an eternal bubble without any real living.

What they didn’t expect was to have a nosy neighbor.

Mary-Lynnette is a loner, a creature of the night. The stars are her best friends, along with her brother Mark. Or so she thought, until meeting her three new and inhumanly beautiful neighbors. The girls seem to be nice enough despite all oddities surrounding their family, but can Mary-Lynnette handle with their older brother…?

Ash knew he was doomed in the moment he laid eyes on Mary-Lynnette. Once, he had heard from a cousin how he would fall hard for his soul mate, but never believed in such crap. He was a man in a mission and Mary-Lynnette couldn’t be related to his difficulties in taking his sisters back home.

Or could she?

anigif_enhanced-buzz-5351-1389581734-11

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader šŸ™‚

OMG, WHY DID I TAKE SO DAMN LONG TO READ THIS SERIES?! IT’S EVEN BETTER THAN THE VAMPIRE DIARIES! (Just don’t tell this to television guys, they will screw this up, haha!). I loved everything aspect of this book and can’t wait to finish Spellbinder, the next book šŸ™‚ Ash was perfection since Secret Vampire, but in this one is where I fell hard for him… *sighs in pure love* I’ll try to do a good job here, but it is so damn difficult when all I feel like doing is fangirling non-stop about Ash, haha!

tumblr_m4rln8lfAV1roknfw

Ahem.

The narrative was my favorite one: third person with alternating points of view. I wish there were more parts under Ash’s POV, but I understand that not knowing much about him it’s part of his charm. Putting more parts under his view would have bared him too much for the reader and all, haha! But one can dream, right? šŸ˜‰

The plot wasn’t overly complicated and quite predictable, but there is a little twist in the end that caught me off guard and this was awesome ā¤ I don’t really mind simple plots as long as they are well executed and hold my attention while I read. I can even know how it all will end, but I always get curious to see how the outcome shall arrive, haha! My point? There is no lost trip for me, haha!

anigif_enhanced-buzz-21690-1387224741-22

The characters are the high point in this book. Rowan, Kestrel and Jade are unique and each represent a type of person: Rowan is gentle and naĆÆve despite being the oldest; Kestrel is ruthless and savage; and Jade is dreamy and brave. They complement each other in such a perfect way! Mark was also a pleasant enough character and I really liked Jeremy despite everything. And, of course, there is their older brother Ash, but never fear, I’ll get to him. I really liked Mary-Lynnette. She was such a strong heroine for a Young Adult book but without losing her teenager spirit. I could have never made her final decision on the end of the book and I will admire her for this till the world ends.

tumblr_lkb58nwS2L1qchnjd

Sorry, I had to insert this here, haha!

Now, let’s go to Ash. Oh, Ash. He is the lost cousin of Damon Salvatore, I assure you. The difference between them is that Damon is actually a pretty nice guy trying to fool people into believing that he is a demon and Ash is actually a demon trying to fool people into believing that he is a pretty nice guy, haha! šŸ˜‰ Mary-Lynnette described him as a royal cat with ever-changing eye colors and this is the most accurate description ever. Ash has his own pace for everything (cof except when it comes to Mary-Lynnette cof) and never has a permanent eye color – not even in his full vampire form. The strange thing about him is that he is both intelligent and not stubborn at all. He sees something that he is doing wrong and he promptly fixes it instead of insisting that he is right. Not many males have this blessed ability, haha!

anigif_enhanced-buzz-9646-1387064448-0

I really think that L. J. Smith rocked in the Night World series so far and dare to say that those books are a must-read if you love Y&A, romance, Vampires, Witches, Werewolves and really cool humans, haha!

5star

That’s it! Thanks for reading this review and I hope to finish Spellbinder soon, haha! Have you read the Night World series?

Secret Vampire, from L. J. Smith (Night World #1)

Good night and hello again! I’m sorry for the weird timing of my posts lately, it’s just that I’m at my uncle’s place and I don’t have my own computer, haha! I had left some programed posts, but apparently, not enough, oops! Now I’m depending of the good will of my relatives to have a computer – so far, my older cousin and my dad, for that matter. This post is being written from my dad’s laptop, thanks, dad!

Anyway, I’m here to talk about Secret Vampire, the first book in the Night World series, by L. J. Smith! Let’s go šŸ˜€

The Story

Poppy was a regular sixteen-year-old girl that found out about a pancreas cancer on her first day of vacation from high school. As the disease was in a terminal instance, there was nothing that the medicals or anybody could do for Poppy.

Anybody human, that is.

James, Poppy’s childhood best friend, is a vampire. He can save her and make all the pain go away. But can Poppy accept him for who he truly is and leave the world that she has always known behind?

Can Poppy survive the Night World?

anigif_enhanced-buzz-5351-1389581734-11

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader šŸ™‚

I had the mass-market paperback edition with the three first books in one for a while now, but only this year I brought myself to read it. And you know what? THIS BOOK WAS AWESOME! I’ve read it on Christmas, literally. I began it on the morning of December 25th and finished it at night, haha! But I don’t know why I was hesitant to read it, as I love The Vampire Diaries books and Night World follows a very similar style of writing and interpersonal relationships between characters. Mysteries of life, right? Haha! Five stars with pride!

As I’ve read The Vampire Diaries in high school (a re-read is in order in 2016), and on a translated version into my native language, I didn’t remember how fluid and nice was Smith’s narrative. It was a good surprise, as my Night World collection is in English. Smith did the narrative in my favorite way: third person with alternating points of view between Poppy, James and Phil, Poppy’s twin brother. AWESOME. BRILLIANT. I LOVED IT.

giphy.gif

Ahem. Ok, I’m under control again.

The plot wasn’t simple, but not that complex either. There were some mysteries, some uncertainties and twists, it was cool. The end was predictable, but in a good way, in my opinion. I hate books with unhappy endings, judge me, haha! This childhood friendship that grows into something more plus the supernatural element worked very well for me and if you like those two elements combined in a romance, just read Secret Vampire ā¤

The characters were a blast. But who is surprised, as this is the same mind that brought us this:

tumblr_mdycehS4xJ1rcvli9o1_500

(if you are new here, just to clarify: I obssess over three general things in life: books, Ava March and Damon Salvatore, LOL)

But back to character’s analysis. I loved Poppy! I usually hate female heroines from young adult books, but she surprised me due to the reality of her situation: a) she dealt in a very realistic way with her cancer discovery even before she learned about James condition; b) she didn’t suffer of instantaneous love, James grew up with her, so their connection made sense and it was very cute; c) she was a strong woman with the worries of a teenager, so she had her moments of bravery and then broke down because of silly things. I could see my 16 year old self in Poppy and that was very nice, haha!

Now, the boys. OH, THE BOYS. I love Smith’s boys, haha! I fell in love with James and his je ne se qua air in scene one and he only made me love him more in the end, haha! He and Poppy had the best dialogues ever, I laughed hard in several parts. They just had this connection, I guess. I also liked Phil, Poppy’s brother. He could be a little dense at times, but sounded so cool and beautiful, haha! I wouldn’t mind dating him at all. And there is Ash. I wanted to hit him with a hard rock while I kissed him. Does this even makes sense? Hahaha!

Ash’s personality reminded me a lot of Damon’s, only that he fools people into believing that he is actually nice, while Damon takes the other way around. I can’t wait to see more of Ash and his schemes on Daughters of Darkness, the second book in the Night World series and my current read. Well, one of my current reads, haha!

giphy (1)

Bonus point: besides the boys, that are hotness all over in the book, I thought that Smith’s way of portraying cancer was awesome. Even with the supernatural element on it, the theme is not spoken of lightly, as a mere excuse for the vampire romance. I loved it šŸ™‚

5star

That’s it, thanks for reading! I loved reading and reviewing this book, haha! Have you already read Night World?

10 Songs that make me think of Damon Salvatore

Hi, there! The lovely Jess, from Mud and Stars, inspired me in the other day with this post about music and books, so now here I am with my top 10 songs that make me think of Damon Salvatore, from The Vampire Diaries šŸ˜€

anigif_enhanced-28008-1392674511-5
Not optional, buddy. Sorry.

Those are not in order, just random songs put together on a list, haha!

  1. Demons – Imagine Dragons

I totally can see Damon humming this song, home alone, wandering that big house of his ā¤

tumblr_lpsggrpx8U1qefhfx
sit and enjoy, love šŸ™‚
  1. Give You What You Like – Avril Lavigne

At heart, Damon is a hopeless romantic, but he has no illusions left in life, so the lyrics and the mood of this song just matches him.

“if the delusional girl thinks so, what can I do?”
  1. Bruises and Bitemarks – Good With Grenades

Come on. THIS WHOLE SONG SCREAMS DAMON SALVATORE!

tumblr_m7ihadx1xk1qdgudho1_500
Well, he had to reach some sort of agreement eventually, haha!
  1. Lost in Paradise – Evanescence

Honestly, if you hear this song, this lyrics, this suffering, and are not able to connect it with Damon, I’ll have to kindly and discreet ask you which planet are you from šŸ™‚

tumblr_mkzlpbwD0O1rg8fy4o1_500
that’s why you have Rick in your life!
  1. This is War – 30 Seconds to Mars

Damon, in both the book and the TV show, has lived in several wars, literally and metaphoric, so I can’t disconnect this song from his story, haha!

“fair enough”
  1. Do Somethin’ – Britney Spears

Damon is always the center of the show, of all attentions in any room, but he hates when people try to label him, so miss Britney defines him good šŸ˜€

“can’t argue with that either”
  1. Waiting for a Friend – The Pretty Reckless

I love Damon and Alaric’s friendship, so I think that this song describes how Damon sees Alaric after they have no more hard feelings for each other (you are free to understand this last phrase in any way you want ;D)

I promise I won’t tell Alaric, don’t look at me like that 😦
  1. One More Night – Maroon 5

Just like Ian Somerhalder singing Sugar, Damon singing One More Night is a sign to be hold. You know, in my head, where this song completely describes all romantic affairs of his life and death. You know.

it is! You know, in a disfunctional way…
  1. Never Enough – Epica

I can totally picture Damon in a High School Musical moment singing this to Katherine anytime. I’m that lame.

all that I have to say about my last comment
  1. Run – Katharine McPhee

This song is not really hers, but that’s the version that I like, from Smash series šŸ™‚ Somewhere between seasons 1 and 2, the original (?) version of this song even features some Damon scenes, so I think I’m up to something when I say that this reminds me of him, haha!

“this could have gone way worse”

Yup, be happy that I didn’t choose (many) absurd songs, hunf.

That’s it, haha! šŸ˜€ Thanks for reading! Do you know/like any of this songs? Do you have songs that remind you of a fictional character as well?
