Top 10 Tuesday: Most Unfortunate Character Names

Hi, there! I gave up on caring about which time I post what, as which really counts is the posting, right? Yup, I thought so, haha!

toptentuesday

It’s Tuesday, so it’s Top 10 Tuesday day! This meme is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and my theme today is Most Unfortunate Character Names – yup, still a rebel and not doing the free theme, haha!

Before I start this list, I’d like to say that those are unfortunate names for me, because of something that happened in my life or someone that I met and didn’t like. It doesn’t mean the name is bad at all most of times 🙂

In no particular order, let’s begin:

 1) Severus Snape, from Harry Potter

harry potter series
from my Instagram

Seriously? Can you just imagine the amount of bullying poor Snape suffered thanks to his name as a child and teen? (And this one is just bad, honestly)

 2) Seth Andrews, from The Hidden Life [review here]

the hidden life 1

Seth was one of my favorite males ever, but WHY DID HIS NAME HAD TO BE SETH? This is the name of the God of Death in the Egyptian mythology and, as a good geek, I’m too used to think of Seth as someone evil 😦 Also, this was the name that I picked for all the bad guys in my childish Barbie plays, so I really have a negative connection with it… If karma exists, I shall marry a Seth someday.

 3) Peter Stoller, from The Fall and Rise of Peter Stoller [review here]

the fall and rise of peter stoller

Another case in which the name is not to blame. My family is from Germany, so I grew up with the German culture right beside me 24/7. One of the typical foods that my family loves is a sweet cake called Stollen, so I kept having ridiculous giggle attacks during the whole book – especially when I realized that Peter was just as interesting as the said sweet cake. Oh, and in my case, this is so not a compliment, haha!

 4) Rowan, from Rowan of Rin series

rowan of rin

I even mentioned this on the review of the first book [here]: this character’s name reminds me of Ronan, from the Grand Chase game, so I keep imagining said Ronan in the place of my darling Rowan, haha!

ronan grand chase
This is Ronan, haha!

 5) Eadlyn, from The Heir [review here]

the heir

Another case in which the name is just bad. I still don’t even know how to pronounce it! America for sure didn’t love her daughter to name her that way and I can totally understand why.

 6) Shelley, from What Lies Within [review here]

what lies within

Back to the “names are not the culprits” section. Shelley is an okay name… If you don’t watch The Big Bang Theory. Sheldon Cooper’s mom calls him Shelly and more often than not someone would call Shelley on What Lies Within and I’d smirk alone. I know, I’m stupid LOL

 7) Gabriel, from Viscount’s Wager [review here]

viscount's wager.JPG

I have a pretty messed up relationship with that name, as all the guys I ever met that had been given this name were jerks or assholes. So when my goddess Ava named one of her characters Gabriel and he also turned up to be a jerk and an asshole, I got depressed 😦

 8) Ned, from Bedding Lord Ned

Who in hell though it was a nice idea to nickname someone whose name is Edward with NED? Can someone please explain this logic to me? Besides being bad and totally random on my opinion, this name reminds me of a really stupid cartoon that I used to hate as a child, called Ned’s Newt. It was disgusting and I kept remembering it while reading this book – btw, the book is awesome, haha!

 9) Klaus Baudelaire, from A Series of Unfortunate Events

a series of unfortunate events

I save the best ones to the end, as my motive for this one is downward ridiculous. I actually like the name Klaus, it’s fancy and sounds manly, but I watched this soap opera when I was a child I’ve been sharing many childhood stories today, oops! called Chocolate with Pepper (a free translation from the Brazilian original title Chocolate com Pimenta) and the small city banker was called Count Klaus. What does this have to do with poor Klaus Baudelaire? Simple. Count Klaus was a poor ugly thing that was a sort of funny villain and was called an old goat by his poor fiancé.

conde klaus

Btw, this was one of the best soap operas that I have even seen, set in Brazil’s 1930’s. I wish I knew of a place that has it with English subtitles, you guys would laugh hard! Oh, and did I mentioned that the clothes were terrific? ❤

ANYWAY. Let’s drop the final bomb.

 10) Light Yagami, from Death Note

death note

Yes, this is a manga and not really a book, but I needed to put this character here. You’d think that it’s bad enough that his name is “Light”. Nope, you haven’t seen it all. Japanese people have the habit of putting last names before given names on everything, so he is called Yagami Light a lot. Still don’t think that’s bad? Try spelling it out backwards. Not convinced at all? Here, let me help:

IMAGAY LIGHT

If you still didn’t catch it… Try spacing it out:

I’M A GAY LIGHT

THERE, I SAID IT. IT IS SO BAD AND THE GUY IS ALLEGEDLY STRAIGHT HAHAHAHAHAHA

harry potter ronny hermione laughing

Ahem.

Thanks for reading and sorry that you had to put up with my silliness, haha! Which are some of the most unfortunate characters’ names for you?

The Hidden Life, by Erin Noelle

The Hidden Life BT banner.jpg

Hi, there! Welcome to another gay book review! And I have another one scheduled for later, mwahaha mwahaha! *evil laughs* I think I should change my blog’s name to The Gay Book Adventures of Annelise Lestrange, haha! Just kidding, not going to happen, but I’d do this name a lot of justice.

ANYWAYS, let’s talk about the star of this review? I received The Hidden Life, by Erin Noelle, from Love Affair With Fiction in exchange for an honest review and to do my blog stop today 🙂 The Hidden Life is a spin-off novella of The Perfect Life, but I didn’t need to read The Perfect Life to understand and love The Hidden Life 🙂 Erin advises us readers not to do that; she says you should read The Perfect Life first, so I apologize by being a rebel and ignoring her warnings, haha!

the story

Seth and Colin are the best of childhood friends. They are that kind of duo that does everything together and is on that intimacy level in which they can read each other’s minds just by standing near each other.

Perfect? Perfect.

However, Colin has a secret. Something he thought he hid well enough and that absolutely no one knew. Colin is a gay boy in the middle of a feverish Catholic family and is the quarterback of their high school team – aka, the most popular guy ever.

What Colin didn’t know was that Seth had two secrets. First, he knew about Colin. Second, he wished to be with Colin. After whoring his way on Colin’s rejected girls for years, Seth realized that the only bed he truly wanted to be in was Colin’s.

And that was the begging of two things: their romance and their hidden life.

the analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG I HAVE NEVER READ ANYTHING LIKE THE HIDDEN LIFE OMG!

bunny omg

Seriously, this book was so intense, so realistic, full of feelings and unusual that I read it all in one sitting! When I blinked, it was all over and I was left DESPERATLY NEEDING MORE! Not enough to actually take an interest in The Perfect Life (we’ll talk more about this later), but enough to wish that this book was a full novel instead of a shy spin off!! Due frustration over its size and thinking that three key scenes on Colin and Seth’s amorous life were missing on this novella, I give it 4 proud stars!!

The narrative style was first person from Seth’s point of view. We get a Colin glimpse on the Epilogue, but I wish I could have seen more of him telling the story, haha! I loved Seth since page one, he is just brilliant AND HE IS A FREAKING JOURNALIST JUST LIKE ME OMG!

Noelle’s writing style is a work of art on its own. Simple, delicate and strong, she grabs your heart and twist during the whole novella, making you grab your seat and the paper bag of the nervousness to accompany you on this adventure. Often enough you could find me like this last night:

agony

AND IT FELT SO GOOD! *–*

The plot was simple and complex at the same time. I quoted Frank Herbert a couple of times already, but once again, his words are true here: “There is no real ending. It’s just the place where you stop the story”. Being in a gay relationship on a scenario that makes it even more socially harder than it sadly is only increases the stress and problems of the couple. I wish Noelle had took her time to develop more their history together, their romance, and not just knitted together some of the major turning events of Colin and Seth’s lives. Noelle had such a wonderful idea for The Perfect Life, why couldn’t she fully tell this story again from another perspective? I doubt her fans would mind and she would win bores like me as additions to her fan base.

You may argue back: “oh Annelise, but the author already wrote the book, why don’t you get your ass out of this computer and go reading it?” Well, because I’m a true bore with my straight contemporary romances 😦 I don’t feel I could finish a book from Monroe’s point of view, as I didn’t like her enough for that. Especially a first person narrated book. I’m almost positive that I would end up being mad at Monroe and this would ruin the rest. The only case scenario that I can see myself reading The Perfect Life is if someone showed up and gave me a paperback copy of it, haha! See why I wished The Hidden Life was more complete?

the lord is testing me.gif

Also, I felt that three key scenes were missing on this novel, being it told from Seth’s point of view. I can’t say which those are due spoilers, but I can tell you that there is no sex in this book, just a bit of foreplay. And surprisingly so, the sex was one of the key pieces here.

awkward silence

But moving on to good aspects: characters! I may have not cared much for Monroe, but I can’t say a thing against her construction. All characters were awesome and I felt their identities as I read the novella. Noelle is that kind of writer that makes the reader feel like they always knew how the characters are, as if we all are great childhood friends. HOW DOES SHE DO IT?!

darcy pride prejudice you have bewitched me body and soul

Obviously Seth made it to My Bookish Boyfriends list, being awesome, hot and a journalist 😉 I didn’t add Colin because while he is all hot and perfect, he is also a big egocentric type. Only Seth can throw Colin out of his pedestal, so no Colin for me, haha!

Overall, if you like contemporary romance, quick reads, jaw-dropping twists, hot journalists and unusual marriage arrangements, you should grab The Hidden Life 🙂

Genre: Contemporary Romance, M/M Romance

summary

I had a hidden life.

To everyone on the outside, I was Seth Andrews, an easy-going, fun-loving rowing coach, best friend to Colin Cassidy – the superstar quarterback of the New England Patriots, and infamous playboy.

To anyone looking in, my life was what others only dreamed of. I had the posh apartment, luxury car, and designer threads to prove it.

But what happens when the life you lead isn’t the life your heart wants? What it needs?

How long can you live your public life when the one that really makes you happy is the hidden one?

***NOTE TO READER: This is a supplemental novella to the full-length novel, The Perfect Life, and should not be read as a standalone.***

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Keith Milano Memorial Fund to help raise awareness for mental health illnesses. For more information visit here.

Just wanted to say that I’m totally reading this as a standalone, as I didn’t get interested in the other book, a straight romance 🙂

The Hidden Life Teaser 4

excerpt

It was close to one o’clock when I pulled up at the mid-century bungalow that Colin rented, happy to see his car already in the driveway. I bounded out of the car and hurried inside, dropping my bag just inside the door as I catapulted myself toward him on the couch, where he sat playing video games, wearing only a pair of basketball shorts.

“Ugh!” he grunted, when I landed on top of him, a teasing smile playing at the corners of his mouth while he wrapped his long, brawny arms around me. “What’ve you been eating, dude? You trying to bulk up like my linemen?”

“Gotta keep up with your growing ass so you don’t crush me,” I countered, my eyes fixed on his sexy mouth, dying to taste it.

Colin smirked roguishly then rolled us to the side so I was laid out on the couch and he was suspended over me, licking his lips like a lion who’d caught his prey. My cock stirred to life.

“Crush you like this?” He released a little of his weight from his arms onto me, pressing our thick bulges together.

I nodded, anticipation blazing through my veins. “Yeah, like that.”

Lowering his face down to mine, the tips of our noses touching as our gazes locked on each other, he rasped, “I thought you liked it when I pin you down and take what I want.”

My entire body clenched at his words, desire radiating inside me from head to toe. Throbbing, pressing against my zipper, my cock was instantly rock-fucking-hard.

“Maybe,” I panted, not wanting to submit to him quite yet as I used every last ounce of willpower I had not to shamelessly roll my hips against his. “Maybe not.”

A feral growl emanated from his broad, shirtless chest as he pushed to his feet, taking me along with him, thrown effortlessly over his shoulder. Stomping his bare feet full-steam ahead across the old hardwood floors, Colin carried me to his bedroom, slammed the door behind us, and tossed me onto the bed.

“I’ll show you what maybe is like,” he warned, while stalking toward me, lust clouding the green in his eyes.

I was in heaven. I loved playful Colin.

“Maybe you will,” I goaded him, as I pulled my hoodie and undershirt over my head together and tossed them onto his floor. “Maybe you won’t.”

His shorts were off in a matter of seconds, and as soon as he reached me on the bed, my jeans and boxers were too. He crawled on top of me, forcing my head back onto the pillows, and caged me in with his perfectly chiseled, enormous naked body. I sucked in a sharp breath as our cocks met, the heat from his flesh searing mine.

“It seems like the longer we go without seeing each other, the cockier this sweet little mouth gets,” he rumbled, nibbling at my bottom lip. “Seems we may need to do something about that.”

My pulse spiked. I forgot how to breathe. My vision glossed over.

When I was with this Colin, I was on top of the world. No matter how much everyone else thought they knew him, no matter how many articles and newscasts had been centered around him, no one else knew the Colin I knew. Not his teammates. Not his coaches. Not his parents. Not even Monroe, who I knew he loved without question.

I was the only one who got to experience his passion. His intense craving to please and to be pleased. His overwhelming love. The refuge I found in the strength and security of his arms was empowering. Life-changing.
