Movie Review: Austenland (2013)

Hi, there! Yes, I’m making a movie review, haha! I’d like to start this post by saying that I’m not Hollywood’s biggest fan. It’s nothing personal, I’m just not really a movie/tv person. I have determinate shows that I like to watch and a small selection of favorite movies that I don’t ever tire of, just like a wide animation collection, but I don’t really crave or care about new movie releases with frequency. It’s easier to sit me on the couch and order me to read a book than order me to watch something – just ask Jenny, she will confirm that to you. My last time at the movies was a forced going to watch Star Wars. And before that, I went to the movies to watch the Minions movie.

Now that you have my whole profile of boredom, you understand that watching a new movie is a big deal to me and that the fact that I chose to review it is a happening. I do intend to review more movies in the future, but for now, it’s new and it’s cool 🙂

And my first movie review is for a book adaptation that I was actually craving to see: Austenland, based on Shannon Hale’s book [review here] and produced by no one less than Stephenie Meyer.

the analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as viewer 🙂

I’d like to start this saying that I had no expectations when I started watching Austenland – it was going to start on one of the endless movie channels at TV and I stopped to watch it. And even so, I was let down. (If you liked the movie, I advise you to stop reading this review here. It’s not my intention to offend anyone, but I don’t have many nice things to say about Austenland =/).

I really enjoyed Keri Russell, the actress that played Jane, the main character, and I loved that Jennifer Coolidge was part of the movie even with the adaptations on her original character. It was the only good humor escape among a very dull and sufferable movie. I hated the overall casting choices, the figurine was poor made and the adaptation itself left a very funny and light book without any emotion or point in existing. I’ll talk more about each subject in detail, but overall, this is a two stars production: it’s so weak that you won’t even have the energy to hate it.

i expect nothing and i'm still let down.gif

Setting: 5 stars

austenland 2.jpg

I have to take my hat off to all the locations shown in the movie. I loved the mansion that held Austenland itself, the way Jane’s apartment was decorated and all the small things that screamed how much she loved Jane Austen. The photography of the movie is also very beautiful and bright – I really love bright movies, I feel like they are getting rare based on all the trailers that I watch, haha!

Figurine: 3 stars

austenland 3.jpg

Honestly? They could have pulled off a better figurine for everyone. Sometimes I really am sure that people that put the movie together simple haven’t read the book. Yes, Jane had a third class package for Austenland, but her clothes were simpler, not outright ugly. They were even colorful! On the other hand, I liked the clothes that they designed to Jennifer Coolidge, they really brought the best on her. But I may be being partial here because I really love her. Hmm… Anyway. I really feel that they could have put more effort into this.

Soundtrack: 2 stars

austenland 4.jpg

I’m one of those people that think that you don’t have to notice the music in the background of the movie; you have to feel it. Like when you start to watch Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and the main theme starts playing and you shiver in anticipation, you know? If you actually notice the music, two things happened: a) you highly identified yourself with that song, that moment and it was oh-so-special for you; or b) you hated it and are annoyed, hoping that it just stop playing. I fell into the second category watching Austenland. Several times I found myself bothered by the songs in the background.

Casting: 1 star

austenland 5.jpg

SERIOUSLY. I was so frustrated with this casting that I actually rolled my eyes every time that Mr. Noble walked into scene. I have always been picky and downward exigent when talking about males to admire, so I know I am a tough audience on this point, BUT COME ON! NEITHER of the guys in Austenland were not even close of enjoyable! FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! There are so many beautiful and talented actors out there! HOW COME AUSTENLAND MANAGED TO PICK ONLY UGLY AND INISPID GUYS FOR ALL MALE ROLES IN THIS MOVIE?! I just can’t. Oh, and Lady Amelia Heartwright also was a disappointment. The book is very clear when highlighting how good she is at that game and how much she prepares herself for her vacations at Austenland. What I saw was a pathetic girl that pretended to know what she was doing and people pretending to be impressed when they actually hated her. Not at all what happened and Lady Amelia Heartwright perfection in this game is a crucial point for the plot and for Jane’s breakthrough. JUST. NO.

For who I thought was well casted: Keri Russell as Jane Hayes, Jennifer Coolidge as Elizabeth Charming, Jane Seymour as Mrs. Wattlesbrook and Rupert Vansittart as Mr. Wattlesbrook.

Script and Adaptation: 2 stars

i am single because apparently the only good men are fictional.gif

I know you can’t put the whole book into the movie, but all the cleverness in the dialogues were gone; only a pale shadow of the brilliantism of Shannon Hale’s book remained. Characters were completely distorted and I can barely connect book with movie. So much time was wasted in stupid scenes that the movie became dull. This was supposed to be a comedy, but I didn’t even got to laugh while watching. I only smirked a lot, haha! I feel so bad for it, because it’s not a popular book and I don’t see many people watching Austenland and being willing to give the book a go 😦 Also, the movie failed to show how living the dream really hit Jane; despite my likeness of her, sometimes she really felt like a whining and indecisive bitch to me and it is SO NOT like that! It’s hard to believe that you actually can live in the “perfect” world as it was her case, you have to conceive what is real and what is not and this is so tiring and frustrating! And guess what? You won’t find any of those dilemmas in the movie. Oh, and guess again: THAT WAS THE WHOLE POINT OF THE BOOK! You don’t need to give up fantasy, but you have to know when to separate it from reality, to regulate your expectations for the real world. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck inside an imaginary bubble and never be truly happy, once that everything will still be fake in the end of the day.

Seriously: or you are in to do a good job and a great movie or don’t. Bother. With. It.

Overall, I recommend it for fans of Jennifer Coolidge, as she shone as always, and for people that really are curious about book to movie adaptations and about Stephenie Meyer producing a movie. See for yourselves how big this tragedy could be.

2star

Oh, and I would only like to remember that Stephenie Meyer said she hadn’t had the time to do something nicer than Life and Death for Twilight’s 10th birthday her only score in life may I add, but had the time to screw what could have been a lovely and funny movie. I bet we will reach Twilight’s 20th birthday without Midnight Sun and with more screwed movies, if I know my lucky well. And I do.

That’s it, thanks for reading my first movie review and I’m sorry I complained a lot, but I simply had to put it out. It wasn’t my intention to offend anyone, including Stephenie Meyer. I honestly hope you enjoy Austenland more than I did if you ever decide to pick it up.

Next movie review: Into the Woods

The Characters Book Tag!

Hi, there! Good afternoon, hope you’re having a great Saturday 🙂 Saturday is book tag day here on the blog and my adorable friend Kim, from The Spines Breaker, tagged me on The Characters Book Tag! 😀 Thank you, Kim! I love all the tags you do, haha! Don’t forget to check out her blog, is amazing!! ❤

You can check the reviews for most books mentioned on this post by clicking on their respective titles. Except for The Crown, in which the link leads you to a nightmarish book cover.

Who is the best kick-ass character?

All time? DAMON SALVATORE. ALWAYS. FOREVER. In case you live in another dimension and don’t know who I’m talking about, he is from The Vampire Diaries series 🙂

12357_492155580833640_1022153505_n
I can’t even with this man.

Which character do you most dislike?

Hmm… That’s a tough one. I think I’ll have to go with Bella Swan, from Twilight. I just hate her so much, haha!

2BFF8AE2E2FEA21E2AA8F3095CAA

If you could date any fictional character, who would it be and why?

I hate to sound repetitive, but it will always be Damon.

tumblr_mdlei5YeIp1r4ud2fo1_250

If you could change a character in any way, what would it be?

I would change Clara’s denseness on Shearwater, Part One, from Derek Murphy (a.k.a. D. S. Murphy). Honestly, that girl drove me nuts until she found out she was a freaking mermaid, haha!

IMG_7693

What character made all the wrong choices and didn’t add anything to the book?

Eadlyn. I apologize to all the fans of The Heir, but I hated Eadlyn too much, haha!

IMG_3504

Besides, the cover for The Crown is giving me nightmares.

Which character was the best villain whom you love to hate?

Ash, from Secret Vampire and Daughters of Darkness. This guy is trash, but oh-so-beautiful trash… I swear he is Damon’s lost cousin, haha!

IMG_7132

Favorite sidekick character with the most heart?

Cash, from Stripped with the Vampire ❤ That guy just ruled sidekicking, haha!

IMG_6826

What is your favorite fictional romantic relationship?

I also hate to sound repetitive here, but my favorite couple ever will always be Max and Tristan, from All In With The Duke ❤ Or they shall be until Ava March outdoes herself again, haha!

ec83452d22b2321e10c19eff22ccc1ea

What character did you think was the strongest?

From my recent reads, I’d say Whyborne, from Widdershins. He faced many fears in the book and resisted many temptations. He is a true hero ❤

IMG_7613

Best protagonist?

I didn’t finish the book yet, but I already have a new chosen one: Integrity, from Gifted Thief. HONESTLY, THIS GIRL.

tumblr_mb641bl1iz1r1guvio1_500

I am in love. Review to come real soon, as I’m almost finished, haha! [UPDATE: review here!]

giftedthiefpic

Who do you tag?

Oh, boy. I’m lazy, haha! But I tag…

Jess, from Mud & Stars

Victoria, from Addlepates and Book Nerds

Mandy, from The Reading Diaries

Abby, from To Infinity and The Bookshop

That’s it, thanks for reading! Everyone is free to do or not to do this tag 😀 If you want to do it, feel free to say that I have tagged you ❤

Book author: Meg Cabot

Hello! Today we have the first post in my new section, Authors from my Heart <3, that will talk about a book author! Last time, I talked about a manga author and now we open the book author section with Meg Cabot!

The first time I’ve read a book by Meg Cabot, I was just a kid. I knew her from The Princess Diaries movies and, of course, wanted to read the books as well. I ran to the bookstore with my mom (I was about 8 or 9) and the first book in the collection was sold out on that particularly place. On that fateful day, my mom couldn’t take me anywhere else and I was so sad that I would have to wait a few more weeks to get it… I don’t remember why, but my mom wouldn’t be able to take me to another bookstore anytime soon. Then, feeling my pain, the bookshop seller said that I could take home a different Meg Cabot series while I waited for The Princess Diaries to be back on stock. That’s when I met The Mediator series ❤ I held the first book with its oh-so-ugly cover in my hands and wanted to cry. My mom insisted that I take it, along with volume 2 in The Princess Diaries series (which had a beautiful cover), so I did it. THANKS, MR. BOOKSHOP SELLER, THANKS, MOM!

tumblr_me7mrucHZn1ql5yr7o1_400

That’s how I got to know my all-time favorite series from Meg and how I discovered that I only liked when Meg wrote supernatural stories. I read the second book in TPD series, believing that I didn’t need book 1 as I had seen the movie and hated everything, haha! Point for the ugly covered book 🙂

In order of appearance in my life:

7377423

I love the movies with all my heart, but those books weren’t for me, simply like that. I used to have the Brazilian Edition in the picture, but I gave it away to my school’s library, as it was clear I would never read it again or continue reading…

IMG_4016
also from my Instagram o/

Oh those covers. Honestly, they were so ugly that the next Brazilian edition had it changed to this:

copia-de-wall_mediadora_1024
despite the inconstancy of Suzannah’s looks through those covers, they are still better than the ones I have home.

The sad part is to see that the original covers also sucked hard. Still, ugly covers or not, I love this series. Jesse was one of my first bookish boyfriends and he played a very important part in my life, as he was almost a cowboy and I have been fascinated by those since I’m a toddler that watched my dad reading Tex’s adventures (a cowboy with a yellow shirt, any bells ringing?). But I’m babbling and the important thing is: WE WILL HAVE ANOTHER BOOK IN THIS SERIES NEXT YEAR!

IMG_6692
Instagram ❤

This book shouldn’t be a standalone, Meg! Please, stop writing lame books and revisit this series, please! But, again: BRAZIL, WHY DO WE HAVE SUCH AN AWFUL COVER?!

93722

I was so happy with The Mediator and Jinx that I forgot how big of a flop that TPD was for me and borrowed The Boy Next Door from a friend. Awful mistake. I’m still not into those kind of books :/ I don’t even remember if I was able to finish it or not, haha!

7280000
I actually love the Brazilian Portuguese edition ❤

This book features several authors, including Stephenie Meyer, but Meg Cabot’s short story was my second favorite ❤ Stephenie’s one was awful.

IMG_6778

I had a true State of Grace when I started this series, as I was on a big hiatus from Meg (her fault, as she made it so hard for me to buy her historical romances and impossible for me to like her regular teen books). I read it slowly, savoring each chapter, because I knew it all ended in three books. And it did and I cried because I was once again orphan from her. And still am, btw. I plan on starting the 1-800-Where-R-You series, but I have no guarantees that I shall like it, so I’m delaying this moment, haha!

Oh, and by the way. 1-800-Where-R-You also has awful covers. Meg, you should sue most of your your graphic designers team. Just a friend’s advice, seriously.

That’s it! Thanks for reading ❤ Do you like Meg Cabot? Which is your favorite book? HAVE YOU READ 1-800-Where-R-You SERIES?! I need to know if I won’t have my heart broken, haha!

Match Made in Mondays: switching points of view!

Hello, there! A wonderful Monday for you! ❤ If you follow me here on the blog for a while, you are sure of two things: a) I love Ava March; and b) I participate of my dear friend Audrey’s Monday-ly meme, Match Made in Mondays! If you head to her blog, Forwards and Bookwords, you can check how to enter and play with us! 😀

This week’s theme is:

CHARACTER’S POV + THIS BOOK/SERIES: What book or series would you love to read again from a different character’s point of view?

For the first time in my life, I won’t start my answer with “I don’t know”! =O

Sometimes, when I read a book, I actually think of how it would turn in other character’s point of view and could name a large number of books here, but honestly? The one I wanted to have read the most was Midnight Sun, Twilight’s book from Edward’s point of view.

IMG_5075
from my Instagram 🙂

Maybe, if I have read all of this one, Edward could have explained to me why did he fell so hard for a girl so awful like Bella. Or why in hell he thinks it is cool to put high school on repeat over and over, haha!

tumblr_m1cu4qj0p41r6bsq4o1_500

I still hope that someday Stephenie Meyer will stop being a whining child and just finish writing this book. It’s not like she will ever have another success again, anyway. (I am being resentful, I know. But just look what happened to The Host. #justsaying)

tumblr_mavxs0Y11R1ro2d43

That’s it! Thanks for reading! Would you read it Midnight Sun if it was really a thing??

A reflection upon Life and Death (calm down, it’s just Twilight Reimagined)

Hello, there! I hope everybody is hanging there on this Tuesday 🙂

A friend just told me about the release of Stephenie Meyer’s new book, Life and Death (Twlight Reimagined), that is today and international.

Cover of the new book, from Goodreads
Cover of the new book, from Goodreads

But, before making any more comments, I would like to tell a story.

I read Twilight when I was in elementary school, a year after the release, as it had just arrived to my country. Back then, at Brazil, no one knew about Twilight, it wasn’t a thing yet. I got crazy with the book, loved it very much and all, became a real fan. My love and worship lasted well and survived the release of the movie (I’m sorry if you guys liked it, but I hated it), as I loved Robert Pattinson, Anna Kendrick and Ashley Greene in their roles (I also liked the actor that played Carslile, but I forgot his name).

All was well, I reached Breaking Dawn and read it. Then, I saw something was wrong, as I hated the book and only had fun on the final chapters, thanks to the battle. What had happened? I loved the series (excluding New Moon, I never liked that book), I loved Edward, I had millions of posters, magazines, notebooks, mugs… And yet, now it was just boring. Then I realized that I had grown up. Not in the sense that “I’m too old for this shitty vampires”, I don’t believe in this crap – you’re never too old to like something. But Stephenie’s vampires didn’t serve me anymore. I had grown up as a person, my tastes had changed. And the movies were so bad (I’m sorry again if you like them) that they made me hate the whole series. Then I started cleaning my room and throw out lots of itens Twilight themed, there’s not much left nowadays. I kept my books and then I realized I just liked Twilight, the first book, all along. I never liked the others – I was happy to read Jake’s perspective of facts here and there, but it didn’t changed the bad story that Twilight became for me. If you ask me, Twilight is a 4 starts book as a standalone to this day.

Here it ends my story with the series. Thank you for indulging me and now I’ll comment Stephenie’s new book.

I wasn’t maddly in love about the cover, but I’ve seen worse. Meyer’s intentions with this book were to show that Bella wasn’t a damsel in distress, that she was a human in distress, caught up in the middle of a battle between super heros and villains, as you can read on the excerpt from Entertainment Weekly:

“Meyer explains in her foreword to the anniversary edition of the novel that she decided to go with the gender bending to underscore her position that Bella isn’t a “damsel in distress” as certain critics have charged. Rather, the author insists, the character is a “human in distress,” or as Meyer calls her, “a normal human being surrounded on all sides by people who are basically superheroes and supervillains.” Meyer also takes issue with the criticism that Bella was “too consumed with her love interest, as if that’s somehow just a girl thing.” The author mentions, too, that Beau is “more OCD” than Bella was and that he’s “totally missing the chip Bella carries around on her shoulder all the time.”

Meyer says writing the piece was “fun, but also really fast and easy.” According to the foreword, the rewrite allowed her to correct some errors that always bothered her and to re-edit the piece for grammar and word choice issues. She also altered some elements of the mythology for consistency.”

If you ask me, this is not a good way to put critics on their places. Damn, your book sold hard and still does, why wasting time on haters? Meyer doesn’t help her case by releasing a new version of her best seller on it’s 10th birthday. Critics now can say that she really has no imagination as a writer to do this. I will read it, because I own this to my twelve year old self that screamed when heard about the movie that they were making for Twilight and I own this to Meyer as a book blogger that writes honest and fair reviews, but I’m so depressed. I wish with all my being that Stephenie got over the Midnight Sun inciddent and just finished the damn thing. It would have been (for what I read at the time) a way better book series and, as E. L. James did with Grey, we could understand why in hell a man like Edward took interest in a girl like Bella.

Crying tears of blood, I promise a review for this in 2015, after college is over and I’m graduated. I hated evey single thing about this retelling so far (especially Edward’s female name, sorry) and I keep my opinion from my rehab times from the series: why couldn’t Edward fall in love with Jake? They would have been the perfect couple.

That’s it on the release, thanks for reading. What are your feelings on this book?
