Gods of Chaos, from Jen McConnel (Red Magic #2)

Hi, there! I promise, last post for today, haha! But let’s admit, I was owing a review for the second book in the Red Magic series, from Jen McConnel: Gods of Chaos! Also, I’d like to thank Chapter by Chapter again for providing me with this book in exchange for an honest review 🙂

The Story

(Goodreads’ blurb)

The gods of chaos cannot be trusted.

Since battling her best friend, Darlena’s grip on Red Magic has been shaky. She heads to Scotland after the Winter Solstice in search of another Red Witch.

On a sightseeing excursion with girls from her hostel, Darlena arrives at The Vaults, a mysterious underground city beneath Edinburgh. But there is something there that make Darlena’s instincts go haywire, as she lets loose a defensive burst of Red Magic, putting everyone around her in danger.

If there was ever a time when Darlena needed the help of another Red witch, it was now. But beware the witch who wields Red Magic.

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

Do you remember when I said that Red Magic had so much potential because Lena had grew up a lot during the story? Well, forget it. As soon as I started reading Gods of Chaos, I saw that all the progress she made on the previous book had flew out of the window and she was back to being a whiny ungrateful child. Also, I hated the destiny of a particular character and that was the decisive point for my final rating. I like to brag that my reviews are as most analytical as I can get, but my ratings are personal and highly subjective, for good and evil. So, for me, this is a two stars book.

I’ll spare your eyes, as the narrative of Gods of Chaos follows the style on Daughter of Chaos: first person styled from Lena’s point of view only. I hated Lena and it didn’t get better on this volume, so there was nothing to do for it.

The plot was very good and even fuller of twists than the previous book. I really liked the scenarios and adventures that Lena had to endure in order to try to become a better Red witch. To be honest, I think the plot is the strongest point in this whole series, as it is what keeps the reader reading [haha] despite Lena’s existence. I was only bothered by a continuation error. On Daughter of Chaos, there is a part in which Lena switch places with a goddess, that shall remain unnamed due to spoilers. In said part, Lena mentions that she uses a Glamour to look like the goddess on an airport bathroom and distinctly says that she uses an invisibility spell right after that, to be able to do what she had to. And then we have a scene further in the series in which Lena wishes she knew how to become invisible to escape her parents. She doesn’t wish for to be able to be invisible at that particular time, she wishes she knew how to do it – and that she clearly knew how to do.

Anyway, the characters. I still think that Gods are portrayed much better than other regular people characters on Red Magic, but I liked human characters more than before. Seriously, everyone seems to evolve but Lena.

and none for gretchen weiners, bye.gif

But for sure the spotlight in Gods of Chaos all go to Marcus and Izzy. Marcus is another Red and Izzy is a Blue witch. Both of them are wonderful and I loved their addition to the series plot. Marcus even made it to My Bookish Boyfriends list!

applause

I wish I could say more about them, but I can’t think of anything that won’t give huge spoilers away, I’m sorry 😦

To be fair, Gods of Chaos would be a three stars book overall, but I can’t bring myself to put it any higher. I had to put up with Lena’s shit and a beloved characters death. I AM NOT MADE OF STEEL FOR GOD’S SAKE!

Overall, if you started this series, do keep going. Things get better, I promise. If anything, at least you will have the chance of meeting Marcus, a delicious bookish boyfriend with powers beyond any thought 😀

The Story

(Goodreads Blurb)

After the disaster in Europe, Darlena’s starting to get desperate. She knows the only way to defeat Hecate and the other crazy Red Gods is by banding together with other Witches, but is it any wonder she has a hard time trusting them?

With Izzy’s support, Darlena begins making fragile strides toward repairing the mess she made, but she just can’t catch a break. As chaos runs rampant around her, Darlena begins to think that things would be better if she’d never become a Red Witch in the first place. But there’s no way to change the past…is there?

The final book in the Red Magic series brings Darlena face to face with impossible odds, and a terrifying choice.

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

I’ve flight through this book. I decided that I’d forever hate Darlena when still reading the second book of the series, Gods of Chaos, but my feelings for her reached a new level on this book. Honestly, it could have been a hundred pages shorter if we just cut out the pages where she tries to put the blame of her actions on others, whines or simply dives into self-loathing. I think that those moments are more than allowed to exist on every book, as they are normal for every human being, but seriously. This girl is a mess. Lucky her that lived on a very constructed world with wonderful magic notions and a delightful mixing of Gods from the whole world! Also, lucky her that I adored Izzie since Gods of Chaos. McConnel’s managed to build a wonderful trilogy despite her protagonist and for that, I bow to her. I couldn’t stop reading Triumph of Chaos until I reached the end and, even with so many loose ends, I think this is a satisfying end. Three stars 🙂

The narrative style followed the other two book’s one: first person styled from Lena’s point of view only. This trilogy illustrated loudly why I don’t usually like this type of narrator. In the moment I couldn’t go back on my hatred feelings for Lena, most of the enjoyment for the wonderful world that McConnel created for Red Magic was lost for me. I couldn’t have a break from her and her whining, her selfishness, her denseness, her soul. This may have been a five stars book, but oh well.

The plot was one of the strongest points of the book, as it was full of surprises and twists. I simply couldn’t tell how the book would end, much less if it was going to end well – you now see why I couldn’t release the book, haha! In a way, many things didn’t go well or on the way I wanted, so that’s why the book lost another star.

The characters again were a source of problem for me. I liked so few characters over this series that I got really upset to see so many of my favorite ones gone. Due to spoilers, I won’t comment further on the matter, but I was so sad to see them gone 😦 Also, I didn’t really like the love triangles that McConnel set up for Lena, but that’s a personal thing for me, as I couldn’t see why anyone would fall for Lena. Looks aren’t everything, after all.

Anyway, there was two characters that I loved really much on the series and that survive all the chaos [haha]: Persephone and her dearest husband, Hades. I loved them so much!! My favorite Gods and characters, along with this boy named Marcus (aka the reason why I gave Gods of Chaos two stars; I couldn’t get over what happened with him).

Overall, this series had a satisfying end and McConnel did create a magic world in which I’d love to live. I may have not been trilled for Darlena, but I highly recommend this series if you like witches, magic, Mythology and a plot full of twists and turnings 😀

Daughter of Chaos, from Jen McConnel (Red Magic #1)

Hi, there! Welcome to the last post of the day 😀 It’s been a while since my last book review, but here we go again 😀 Blame season 7 from Supernatural for sucking my soul on the last three or four days. Today’s book was received from Chapter by Chapter as a preparation for an upcoming book tour in exchange for an honest review. I’m talking about Daughter of Chaos, first book in the Red Magic trilogy, by Jen McConnel! 😀

The Story

Darlena Agara is one of those people that have deep authority issues, but other than that, she’s your typical teenage witch: problems with the hot ex-boyfriend, a weird best friend, unsure of the path that she will choose to follow with her magic.

Or she was, until no one less than Hecate, the Queen of the Witches, showed up on Lena’s living room and forced her to choose her path there and now. Without a moment lost, Lena chooses the Red path. Okay? Okay.

Except there wasn’t supposed to be a Red path. At Trinity’s school, Lena was taught the three big paths: White Magic, Black Magic and Green Magic. Not a single word about Red in all those years of learning.

To make things worse, everyone starts to panic when Lena’s choice becomes public: she’s graciously expelled from her school, her parents are afraid of her, her best friend is envious of her apparently big power (which Lena is still questioning) and her house becomes a point for Goddesses to appear out of the blue. Okay? Okay.

There is just one little thing that Darlena would really like to know now: what the hell is going on with her life.

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my thoughts and opinion as a reader 🙂

I’m a goner for paranormal/fantasy romances, Mythologies (especially the Greek’s one), witches and a good rebel character. Daughter of Chaos accomplished almost all things, expect that I couldn’t connect with Lena not one single time. I don’t know if I’m getting old to read YA (PLEASE, DON’T BE IT, I LOVE YA) or if we just didn’t hit it off, but I couldn’t. The fact that the book was first person narrated from her point of view just made matters worse and I caught myself rolling my eyes all the time 😦 On the other hand, this book had it’s magical world really well constructed and I loved the way that McConnel portrayed the Gods in general (I even liked Hecate!!), so I had a great time on every scene that Lena was snapping at a God. Overall, it was a good start for a trilogy and kept my interest high enough at the end for me to anticipate reading the next volume, so three stars 🙂

As I said, the narrative was first person styled from Lena’s point of view only. After a good wave of really nice first person narrated books that made me bite my tongue, I was sharply remembered by McConnel why I don’t really like this kind of narrative style. Lena and I just weren’t meant to be and I couldn’t have a break from her. I can’t deny that she grows up during the book, but she didn’t manage to convince me to like her until the end of this volume. Let’s see if she will keep growing on Gods of Chaos, haha! Before I write a whole paragraph for Lena, let’s talk about the plot.

The plot on this book is disguised as simple, but surprised me deeply. On the moment that Lena’s life exploded into chaos [haha], I couldn’t see where the story was going. I won’t say that everything got me by surprise, especially when it involved the character’s destiny, but the directions of the plot always made me widen my eyes and that felt very good! McConnel’s writing style isn’t remarkable and there are a few edit issues, but nothing compromising. Lena made the book lose two stars all by herself, haha!

And speaking of Lena.

avril sighs in exasperation.gif

We started the book with the wrong foot. As soon as I learned why she broke up with her boyfriend, Justin, I rolled my eyes and knew I was dealing with a spoiled child. It was amazing how Lena could be dense, ungrateful and a bitch. It was a good thing that I wasn’t inside the book with her or she would have permanent purple eyes. I can’t deny, she got better towards the end, as she grows up, but Lena still has a long journey until she impresses me.

As a matter of fact, all human characters on this book annoyed me. Well, except Dennis, I guess, but I can’t talk much about the poor kid. Spoilers and everything, sorry. It was too obvious what was going to happen with Justin and then with Rochelle, the best friend. On the other hand, I loved every single God mentioned and presented on this book. My favorites? Hades and Persephone. Hades was the coolest and cutest (yes, you read it right) God ever. I really hope he gets to appear more, I’m in love ❤ Never mind that this is the third time that I fall in love with a Hades representation in a book. Hades alone won a star for Daughter of Chaos, haha!

Also, can we please praise this cover? I’m in love.

Overall, this is a nice read to pass the time and I can’t wait to see what comes next in the Red Magic series. If you like awesome Gods, good hot guys, badass witches and mysteries, give this book a go!
