Can love be found off the beaten track?

Graham Hodson lives for adventure. His entire life has revolved around his obsessive wanderlust. His inner fear of staying in one place or being with one person for too long has kept him on the go. The last thing he expects is a sudden diagnosis to ground his travel—permanently.

Boyce “BC” Brooks has screwed up his lifelong dream of being the captain of the English national rugby team. He’s lost everything. When his uncle leaves him an inn and a dog in Cornwall, he has little choice but to try his hand at innkeeper.

Can two jokesters kicked around by life and their own decisions find stability when their world shakes beneath their feet?

Bookish News: all the interesting things I’ve learned while on hiatus

Good morning, stars! It’s me, the book blogger – sorry if you expected the moon, our lady is asleep right now. I was organizing my e-mail this weekend and realized there are TONS of bookish news I’d like to share and comment with you, but mostly are from my hiatus (a.k.a. old news). As a journalist, I can’t sell you this information as fresh, because mostly aren’t. Also, I’d totally spam your inboxes with so many things I wanted to tell you all, so I decided to do a huge post (spoiler alert?) with all the top news I’ve learned and squealed over during my recluse days.

On the future, I plan to transform this into a weekly deal. While we wait for that particular miracle, I’m going to ravish about all the good stuff I’ve learned through the past two or three months =) To make navigation easier, I wrote this post in topics, sorting the authors alphabetically by their first name! #ocd #sorrynotsorry

This post has news about: Anne Renwick, Bonnie Dee & Summer Devon, Elaine Ashford, Helen Harper, Jeff Adams, Jordan L. Hawk, Linda Oaks, Mark C. King and Melissa Foster!

Anne Renwick

  • The Silver Skull (The Elemental Web Chronicles #2)

I’ve stumbled upon Anne Renwick’s books a couple of weeks ago and signed up to her newsletter. I’m crazy about newsletters of any kind, so I had to add hers to my collection ❤ Last Friday, she revealed the final cover for the second book in  The Elemental Web Chronicles, coming out on January of 2017: The Silver Skull!

the silver skull.png

As you can see, I’m in love already and we haven’t even reached the blurb, haha! The book doesn’t have a profile on goodreads yet, but you can take a look on the first volume here and visit the author’s site here for more information on the series =)

Bonnie Dee & Summer Devon

  • Delaney and the Autumn Masque (Victorian Holiday Hearts #4)

My divas released their newest book on October 3rd! Delaney and the Autumn Masque is the last book in the Victorian Holiday Hearts series, with a steamy gay romance for each special holiday of the year! I already own books one and two, but I have failed my goddesses and haven’t started the series yet. #shameonme But I shall and soon, as their books are too good for me to go without =)

We don’t have a cover or a Goodreads page yet, so I’ll just leave this killer blurb here and, if you want to stay tuned on Bonnie’s news, sign up to her newsletter on her website =)

Elaine Ashford

  • Bodyguard Boyfriend

I’ve stumbled upon Elaine Ashford quite by accident by the end of March. I still hadn’t the chance of reading her books until this week, but she touches my guilty pleasure with her works: sugared gay romances. She released two books during my moping time, the first being Boyfriend Bodyguard, on Sept. 26th through Lovelight Press. A hot bodyguard and a secret relationship? COUNT. ME. IN.bodyguard-boyfriend

summary

A business relationship…

Pop star Adrian needs a new bodyguard as soon as possible, and the hottie the agency sends is exactly his type. At least visually. But Rob isn’t as dull as he seems and there’s a softer side to this ex-military man that Adrian didn’t expect.

Rob doesn’t care what his new boss thinks: he just wants him to be more careful. Adrian’s recklessness with strangers is going to get him in trouble, and make Rob’s job more difficult than it has to be. But Adrian’s sunny personality doesn’t turn off when it’s just the two of them in a hotel room, and this young star might be more charming than Rob knows what to do with.

Becomes more than a job…

Just because Adrian flirts like it’s breathing doesn’t mean Rob has to be any less professional on the job. Somehow, it’s happening anyway. When a couple of fan encounters go sour – and heart-pounding – Rob has to admit that he cares more than he thought.

Tumbling into bed together isn’t the problem, it’s figuring out how to date out of the public eye.

But how far can that go?

Falling in love means Rob cares more than ever about keeping Adrian safe. But not all dangers are so easy to spot. This time, it’s not some crazed fans: it’s a family matter. And Adrian wants Rob to keep out of it. Are Rob’s protective instincts going to drive them apart? Or is there a real danger out there, and will Rob be in time to save the one he loves most?

  • Junior Jolt (Straight College Guys #3)

Her second book released during these hard times actually went live on Monday, Nov. 21th, and you’ll see a review for it sometime in the next days. Miracles do happen and, somehow, Elaine included my name on her ARC readers list, so I find myself with a copy on my hands that I just finished last night! Despite this being the third volume in the series, they can be read as standalones. I’m sure I’ll end up buying all her books with the Amazon credits my relatives give me this Christmas, haha!junior-jolt

Stepping up…

Hockey captain Parker Gagner is straight. Isn’t he? He’s always thought so, but there’s something so compelling about Eli Martin’s pleading eyes that it makes him step into an argument between Eli and Eli’s asshole ex-boyfriend without thinking. Pretending to be Eli’s new man is only supposed to be a protective gesture, until spending time together becomes more important than pissing off Eli’s ex.

Holding back…

Eli isn’t sure what to do about his growing attraction to Parker. They’re doing a lot of fake dating, and he can’t help wanting more. Making a move is out of the question, though, unless he wants to risk destroying their friendship.

Crossing lines…

An unexpected late-night encounter leaves both men conflicted and avoiding each other. Can they find a way to talk about their feelings before it’s too late, or have they ruined their chance to really be together?

Helen Harper

  • Last Wish (Highland Magic #4)

I’ve met Helen Harper last year when I received Gifted Thief to review from the publisher, via NetGalley. It was love at first read and, almost a year later, Integrity Aidar’s journey reaches an end on the fourth book of the Highland Magic series: Last Wish. The book will be released on December 1st and Helen was awesome enough to provide me with an ARC, so you can expect the conclusion to Integrity’s adventures soon here too! Spoiler alert: I already finished the book, haha!last-wish

summary

It’s not easy pretending to be dead – especially when it feels as if you have the weight of the world on your shoulders. Between an unfulfilled prophecy, the demon-occupied Lowlands, the continuing power of murderous Aifric Moncrieffe – not to mention her constant yearnings for Byron – Integrity Adair has a lot to worry about.

Still, how hard can it really be to save Scotland, maintain her morals, get the guy and keep her sense of humour?

This is the fourth and final book in the Highland Magic series.

  • Eros (Olympiana #1)

Another wonderful news is that Helen and other 12 authors put together an awesome box with 13 books, called Urban Mythic: Thirteen Novels of Adventure and Romance, featuring Norse and Greek Gods, Demons and Djinn, Angels, Fairies, Vampires, and Werewolves in the Modern World =D Helen’s contribution was the first book in the series erosOlympiana, Eros. As you can imagine, it’s a retelling of the Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche and she was awesome enough to believe in me and send me a copy despite my offline struggles. Besides being grateful to the end of the world, I can assure you all that the book is great, as I already read it as well, haha! Now I only need to read the other 12 stories… Oops!

summary

William Shakespeare once wrote that, “Cupid is a knavish lad, thus to make poor females mad.” The trouble is that Cupid himself would probably agree…

As probably the last person in the world who’d appreciate hearts, flowers and romance, Coop is convinced that true love doesn’t exist – which is rather unfortunate considering he’s also known as Cupid, the God of Love. He’d rather spend his days drinking, womanising and generally having as much fun as he possible can. As far as he’s concerned, shooting people with bolts of pure love is a waste of his time…but then his path crosses with that of shy and retiring Skye Sawyer and nothing will ever be quite the same again.

But all he wants to do is live the life he’s always dreamed of and forget his stint with the institution that allows but doesn’t necessarily accept.

The chemistry between Tristan and Alex ignites from the moment they meet, and the more time they spend together, the hotter the flames burn. the analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

I need to start by making a confession: dystopian is not my thing. I tried a lot, but I never encountered that one book that made me stop the eye rolls at the genre. Well, until The Dream Protocol, that is. This book surprised me in every aspect and made me ache to keep reading it, to know what came next. It was a fast and fluid read, just what I needed to fall in love with the genre. It has some small problems that bothered me nevertheless, so four stars 🙂

my-emotions

The narrative was third person with that kind of narrator that floats from character to character, the traditional guide of the story. Despite third person being my favorite type, this time, I admit that I got really confused in several parts during the beginning. There was nothing indicating that the point of view had changed, so I didn’t know who was thinking what. Eventually, this problem was one of the things that made this book lose a star. What I really like is how Quick’s writing makes us fly through the pages, how she slowly introduces us to this alternative reality sometime in the future. She never dumps tons of information at her reader and then move on. There is always a new details here and there, something that you sense more than learn. Honestly, this woman is a genius.

tumblr_mzpkp5jiVj1rb4ssdo1_500

The plot also was awesome. So many twists without the obvious outcomes! =O Every time I thought I had catch how Quick worked [haha], she metaphorically winked at me and called me loser, HAHAHA! The Dream Protocol was one of the few books in which every prediction that I made was wrong and it drove me nuts, hahaha! Annelise, darling, you get upset when you can guess things and when you can’t? Get a grip and make a decision, please!

hannah montana miley cyrus true

I know, I’m weird. I can’t explain, but I always feel ridiculously happy and disappointed at the same time when books hit my theories with a shovel and laugh at my face. You know, metaphorically. I never heard of anyone getting a shovel in the face from a book. Oh, well, I’m babbling, sorry. Back to business!

In case you didn’t guess, Quick’s society is built on dreams, quite literally, and that’s what drove me to this book. I was a bit taken aback at first thanks to my previous experience with The Dreamer (review here – not dystopian, but fantasy with dreams), but it is a pleasure to inform that Quick delivers everything a reader could ask for in matters of world building and scenery. Besides, a big plus is that the story is on Ireland ❤

no-better-place-to-fall-in-love-than-ireland

Now, characters. This is the other place in which the book failed me a little. I didn’t understand where does Deirdre’s rebellion comes from. She has a good social position on her society, she has loving parents, a sister to fight with and friends. She is rebel simply to be and I found this shallow. She doesn’t have solid reasons to be against the society. I know her parents produce the dreams and that’s how she knows that the things that she dreams about are real, but she doesn’t have a strong case to be so hostile. Don’t get me wrong, I really like Deirdre because she isn’t your standard YA female heroine, but she has a weak construction. Funny enough, all the other people around her seem to have strong motives to be as they are, haha! Oh, well.

I knew this was too good to be true hilary duff a new cinderella story

To wrap things up, I must warn that this book ends on a MAJOR cliff hanger and I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK OMG! *–* If you like YA, dystopian and almost unpredictable books, just stop wasting time on my babbling and GO READ THE DREAM PROTOCOL!! ❤

Black Water Tales: The Unwanted, from JeanNicole Rivers (Black Water Tales #2)

(Alternative title: HOLLY F*, THE CREEPS. ALL. OVER. THE. PLACE! =OOOOOO)

Hello to you that decided it was a good time to seat and read a review! Or not sit, but happily scroll down through your phone. Oh, well. Welcome to you, no matter if you are seated, on your feet or laid down. My only piece of advice before cutting the crap and start talking about today’s book is: do not read this with the lights off. You know, safety matters and all. Thanks!

Without further ado, today I took the day to review a DELICIOUS book that I received from the author in exchange for an honest review: Black Water Tales: The Unwated, from JeanNicole Rivers! Technically, this is the second book in the series, but they are totally unrelated to each other, so I will just treat is as a standalone 🙂 Thanks so much for sending me your book, JeanNicole! I don’t have the words to describe what it meant to me! Actually I kind of do, as I am writing all about my feels for the book as we speak, but never mind that.

black-water-tales-the-unwanted

the story

Blaire Baker is one of those people who is in a serious need to find a purpose in life. Which better way than to volunteer herself to teach special children at a poor orphanage in eastern Europe? St. Sebastian sounds like the perfect place to escape her problems and make herself useful, maybe even changing some lives for good. Paired up with Travis, a funny and easy-going nurse on the same mission as her, Blaire heads to Borslav to start her life.

She knew not to expect a nice looking place or even healthy children, but nothing prepared Blaire to the eerie creeps that St. Sebastian gave her. She also wasn’t prepared to deal with emotionless and stoic children that couldn’t care less what happened around them. Or even to hear so many whispers about the basement.

As if caring for those lost children wasn’t already a big deal, Blaire also started to be haunted by her own past. She would have to fight her own demons before trying to dig up the mysteries around the night noises and voices of St. Sebastian.

The only question is… Will she survive long enough for that?

the analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

DEAR HEAVENS, WHERE DO I BEGIN?! This book scared me on a whole new level. I admit not being an avid reader of terror books so far in my life, but NOT A SINGLE BOOK THAT CAME BEFORE THIS ONE WRACKED ME SO HARD! Nearing the end, I would shiver in broad daylight, with the sun on my back and many people around me, feeling utterly alone in the world. As I finished it on a very crowded subway station, I kept looking over my shoulder, being sure that ~something~ was watching for me, if you know what I mean. I only avoided a panic attack because I managed to run home and burn my energy. And when I say run, I mean it. I must have looked absolutely crazy, because I only stopped to cross streets and to enter my building… Oh well, it happens to the best of us. For all those sensations, that are priceless on their own twisted way, A MILLION STARTS FOR THIS BOOK!

The narrative had to be my favorite style: third person with switching points of view between Blaire and Travis. As both them are oblivious to the things that really happen at the orphanage, the narrative choice fit as a glove. Even when one of them discovered something else, we all kept in the dark (quite literally) about what was real and what was paranoid delusion. In the end of the book, I truly didn’t know any more if things were actually happening of if it was a glitch from one of their minds. Rivers plays with your mind that hard.

i-dont-know-what-i-believe-anymore-pll

The plot was all kinds of brilliant. I admit that the story starts off a little slow with Blaire going to Borslav with Travis, but as soon as they step on St. Sebastian for the first time, you are doomed. It’s a mix of morbid curiosity with pure agony that makes you go on. You want to see these poor children winning in life after so many problems. I have to also admit that I was actually cool in the scary side while I thought things were supernatural. While I thought that ghosts were behind the bad things and that was a simple matter of calling Sam and Dean, you know?

jensen-a-dean-winchester-ghostbusters-tee
I thought it would be the case of involving the Impala brothers 😛

However, Rivers played me like a puppet and laughed (metaphorically) at my face. No Sam and Dean were required and just like that my biggest fears came alive: REAL PEOPLE DOING NASTY THINGS. This is what truly scared the shit out of me and Rivers had me at my fear of real people. Well played, Rivers. Well played indeed.

slow clapping.gif

Ok, focus. Now we have characters. Oh, the characters. I was soooo in love with Blaire and Travis once that I got to know them! What I really liked about this book is that the author didn’t push the romance – no, it’s all about the mystery and remaining true to yourself. Despite some facts, it would have been really easy to turn Travis and Blaire into a couple and I am so proud of Rivers for not falling into that trap ❤ From the bottom of my heart: THANK YOU!

What I really love about Black Water Tales: The Unwanted is that every character has a shady edge, even the children and St. Sebastian building. By the way, the building pulses with life, which is so freaking odd and creepy. I love decadent places, but I doubt I would have the courage to enter St. Sebastian.

i literally cannot even i can't even i am unable to even i have lost my ability to even i am so unable to even

The only complaint that I have is that I ended the book without many vital details. I felt more tying up right before the end and I doubt that the next instalment of this series will also be in Borslav, so it is a bit disappointing. I only overlooked this on my rating because all the rest is SO FREAKING AMAZING that I could deal with some plot holes, haha!

I think I have already went on too much today, so let me just wrap things up by saying that if you love mystery and terror, you simply have to read this book asap. After that, message me for us to fangirl about it together, please! =D

The Deeper He Hurts, from Lynda Aicher (Kick #2)

(Alternative title: the book in which I would gladly wave goodbye to half of the sex scenes as BSDM is so not my cup of tea)

Hello, again! YES, I DECIDED TO BREAK RECORDS AND WRITE TWO REVIEWS ON THE SAME DAY. HOW ABOUT THAT?!

I would like to thank my mom and my dad for this special moment, along with my lack of a social life and sense of needing to get things done for this winner moment. Now shall we start talking about the book in question? Hahaha!

I received The Deeper He Hurts, second book in the Kick series from Lynda Aicher, from Loveswept in exchange for an honest review, as I had previously reviewed the first volume of the series 🙂 You may want to check it out:

the analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

Sooooo, this is a really good romance between two fellows who seriously need to move on – each on his own way – with a huge quality stain to it. This is a heavy BSDM book and, while I totally respect adepts and lovers, this is very out of my league. I knew this when I accepted the book, but as I had read and loved the first volume of the Kick series, I decided to give it a chance. Lucky me, as everything else made up to me for all the kink play that I had to endure, haha! Four stars with BDSM and all 🙂

The narrative is third person style, switching between Ash and Swayer’s points of view. As you all may be tired of hearing, this is my favorite style, so no complains here, haha! Also, I felt substantial improvement on Aicher’s writing since the first book, especially on the humor. Ash and Swayer are so damaged as Grady and Micah, but they laugh a lot more – THANK ALL HEAVENS for that, haha!

The plot was very simple, as it tends to happen with pure romances: the characters must overcome their shit in order to be together and that’s easier said than done. Don’t expect anything out of this world or big twists, because that’s not gonna happen, haha!

not gonna happen dude demi lovato.gif

I take my hat off to Aicher’s characters, by the way. They are really well developed, even the side ones, and you can feel that they could be your neighbors – in this particular case, I really hope they are not, as Ash and Swayer are really loud on their sex, HAHAHAHA! However, I miss the point: as you worry about your neighbor, you will worry for her characters. You feel their struggles, you know they deserve to be happy and you want to scream at their faces to make they see what is right in front of their noses. This kind of connection is really awesome ❤

On a more deep point, however, I felt like Aicher repeated the recipe quite literally. I felt a pattern repeating so clearly before my eyes that I could predict many of the character’s reactions and actions. The most sad thing about this is that she doesn’t use regular stereotypes! I mean, Aicher made her own recipe to have a good gay romance going and she used it again on the second book, element by element. Family loss, mental disturbs, the dominant bottom and the passive top, the hiding information and fear being the protagonists on the problems list. I felt like I was reading an improved version of The Harder He Falls and that’s why I liked The Deeper He Hurts best. Honestly, being a journalist sucks on those moments, haha! I wish I could be blind to this type of thing.

kill me now.gif

And I also feel forced to talk about the BSDM side of the book. People, it isn’t something that I enjoy and I haven’t on this book, but I have to say something: Lynda Aicher knows what she is doing here. I was wide-eyed with some of the scenes between Asher and Swayer =O This was all too professional! No labels are used lightly. If Aicher says the guy is a sadist or a pain slut, JUST BELIEVE HER.

Anyway, back to the good stuff. Have you seen this winner cover?? I really like the models that Loveswept chooses for their covers ❤ If you like gay romance and BSDM, you totally should give this book a chance 🙂

The Talented Mr. Rivers, from HelenKay Dimon (End of the Line #2)

Mr. and Mr. Smith (End of The Line #1)

Now we can move on!

the talented mr rivers

the story

Will Rivers should be the poster guy for “flight of fight”. Born into a family of bloodthirsty and murderous people, all he ever wanted was to escape his family and his fate. After the CIA exploded his brother’s house on England, Will knows that his time is up and he must make a choice: to finally engage on The Pentasus, one of the most dangerous criminal organizations of the world, as one of the rightful heirs or to kill his own identify and never look back. It seems a pretty easy choice if you remove Hunter, his bodyguard, of the equation. Will can’t see his happily ever after without Hunter on it, but which side is he on? Will knows that he can trust Hunter with his life, but what about his heart…?

Hunter should be the poster guy for “the most fucked up person of the year”. After agreeing to help Fisher, Zach, Seth and other agents of the CIA to bring down the Pentasus, his life as an undercover bodyguard at the Rivers’ state turned upside down. He lost the good graces of the German intelligence – his actual employer – and is almost sure that his cover was blown with the Rivers. To make things worse, the only person that could help him to finish his mission and bury the Pentasus is missing: Will, the younger River’s sibling and his charge. Hunter won’t rest until Will is safe and sound again, no matter what CIA, BSD or anyone says. The question is: Hunter is doing this for the sake of the mission or for the sake of his heart?

the analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

WHERE DO I BEGIN?! This book was even better than the first! I loved Will and Hunter to the core, they were a great couple! I also love that Will has this nerdy face, but in reality he is a killing machine *–* Oh dear, I always fall for the bad guys… ANYWAY. This book had all the elements that make me love a story. I do have some complaints about it, but nothing that made it less than a 5 stars reading for me ❤

tumblr kuzco disney bring it on.gif

The narrative is third person with switching points of view between Hunter and Will. This is my favorite style, as we can detach ourselves of the less dear protagonist if needed. Not the case on this book, as I loved Hunter from the first book, in which he has an important role, but wasn’t a main character, and Will grew on me instantly. On the end, I was totally team Will, haha! The writing style also is very good, as Dimon writes each character with such a strong will and mind that you can know whose side of the story you are reading way before names appear. Also, Hunter and Will’s story had a very different vibe from Fisher and Zach’s story and that is pretty amazing! ❤ Also, Dimon’s humor is very natural and easy to follow along, as both men say stupid things without realizing and then make fun of each other for that – just like you and me! I feel like anything from her that I put my hands on will work greatly ❤

tumblr disney kuzco oh whatever you say pumpkin you know what i like.gif

The plot was a bit obvious, but I have to admit that I didn’t start my read engrossed on the mystery, haha! I wanted a good action/adventure/romance book with great chances of a sort of happy ending. Also, both Hunter and Will overthink a lot. Like, seriously, it was tiresome in several parts. I get it, they both needed to build trust and blah blah blah, but I felt that Dimon overdramatized several parts without necessity. I would have been happier if they had argued more, talked more. ANYTHING BUT OVERTHINKING. You don’t need to keep repeating why you can’t be together, guys!

kuzco dont know dont care disney.gif

The characters are the most brilliant point of this book. Not only Hunter and Will, but everyone that makes an appearance is so well constructed, so real ❤ Seriously, Dimon is one of those authors who manages to build a character in your head without you realizing it. When you look, there they are, waving at you as if they had been there the whole time! But my favorite is Will. EVERYONE underestimates him.

tumblr kuzco disney let me guess you have a great personality.gif

And then Will goes and kicks everybody’s ass, Hunter included. He is very reasonable, but don’t step on this toes. Will may not be bloodthirsty, but he wouldn’t even blink before breaking a few bones ;D

tumblr disney patcha emperor new groove dont throw off his groove.gif

As it goes for Hunter, his name should be incarved on the dictionary, to define “trust issues”. No matter how many times Will proved himself, Hunter always had a suspicion. Needless to say, it got old, hahaha!

tumblr i have no idea youre the criminal mastermind not me kuzco disney.gif

Now let’s talk about stuff I didn’t really like, haha!

i got three good reasons why you should just walk away kronk disney.gif

We didn’t have enough time to understand Peter, Will’s older brother. The guy was sick on a whole new level, haha! I kind of wished we had known more of him before the end 😦 I think it would have been a good “woow” material, haha! I also wished that we had seen more jealous scenes between Fisher and Will, haha! Zach, Fisher’s boyfriend, slept hard with Hunter in the past and this had so much potential to generate fun scenes… Almost totally overlooked 😦 And the last thing: a freaking open end. I don’t really know what will become of Will and Hunter, how they will manage their future! I HATE OPEN ENDS OMG!

tumblr you threw off my groove kuzco disney.gif

The good thing is that I have many reasons to hope for another book in this series, thanks to all this openness, haha! Now we will take a moment to appreciate this beautiful cover that The Talented Mr. Rivers possesses, haha! ❤

I guess that now it’s all said and done, guys. You may be wondering only why I only used The Emperor’s New Grove gifs. The answer is because I needed a true diva to express all my feelings for this book.

kuzco disney make my omelet a meat pie.gif

Kuzco is the best Disney princess ever, HAHAHAHAHA! Just don’t tell Yzma, she’ll be upset that she’s second place both on the kingdom and on being a diva ;D

Allright, just to wrap this: do you like Action? Adventure? Hot guys? Hot guys with a very active sexual life? Geeks that can kill? TONS OF BEAUTIFUL MEN? THEN STOP READING THIS AND GO READ THE END OF THE LINE SERIES!

The Doll-Master and Other Tales of Terror, from Joyce Carol Oates

(Alternative title: the book that made me so hot to read it that burned me when I did)

Hi, there, lovelies! Slowly and steadily, I’m putting some order on my missing reviews 🙂 I’m almost done with the sent books, so I’ll start the asked ones, haha! Today I’ll be talking about a book I received through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review: The Doll-Master and Other Tales of Terror, from Joyce Carol Oates. While I thank the publisher to the infinity and beyond for approving my review request, I must say that this book wasn’t my kind of terror 😦

For that reason, I won’t be long on my review, as I still think many people out there will love it despite my feelings towards this book 🙂

the doll master and other tales of terror

summary

From one of our most important contemporary writers, The Doll-Master and Other Tales of Terror is a bold, haunting collection of six stories.

In the title story, a young boy becomes obsessed with his cousin’s doll after she tragically passes away from leukemia. As he grows older, he begins to collect “found dolls” from the surrounding neighborhoods and stores his treasures in the abandoned carriage house on his family’s estate. But just what kind of dolls are they?

In “Gun Accident,” a teenage girl is thrilled when her favorite teacher asks her to house-sit, even on short notice. But when an intruder forces his way into the house while the girl is there, the fate of more than one life is changed forever.

In “Equatorial,” set in the exotic Galapagos, an affluent American wife experiences disorienting assaults upon her sense of who her charismatic husband really is, and what his plans may be for her.

In The Doll-Master and Other Tales of Terror, Joyce Carol Oates evokes the “fascination of the abomination” that is at the core of the most profound, the most unsettling, and the most memorable of dark mystery fiction.

the analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

This book wasn’t for me. I like my terror more terrifying. I enjoyed the first story, but I had it all figured out in the middle. The other stories were just boring for me and I feel awful for that. The writing style was tiresome, the mystery was too obvious and the terror itself didn’t built up on my head :/ I was the most wrong target, haha! So, two stars.

What I liked: the first story. I loved the concept and even after understanding it all, it gave me the creeps to keep going. I have a thing for dolls, especially porcelain dolls. I know several people are afraid of them, but I love them to the core – I have four myself, gifts from my grandma ❤

oh are those antique dolls supernatural dean winchester tumblr

That’s my reaction EVERY TIME I see pretty vintage dolls, be it porcelain or not, haha!

Anyway, I don’t really want to bitch about this book. All I will say is that I was too excited to read the book and got disappointed. If you like light terror, soft mystery, creepy things and don’t open this book with high expectations, you’ll love it 🙂
