OF THE TREES COVER

summary-panda-no-background

Cassie and Laney fancy themselves amateur ghost hunters. When a carnival comes to town, Cassie embraces the chance to try something new.

Carnival workers watch the girls with a collective gaze that ignites in Laney a dark and dangerous fascination, leaving Cassie unnerved.

It’s not just their age or the unsettling way they stare. There is something in the shifting of their skin and the way their features seem to change in the shadows.

Cassie can’s shake this sickening feeling that there’s more to the carnival than meets the eye.

When townspeople suddenly start dying and bloody warnings appear around town, Cassie is lured into a nightmare where trees whisper and strange, shape-shifting men haunt the backwoods she once hunted for ghosts with her best friend.

Then Laney goes missing, and only Cassie can get her back. But the creatures of the trees aren’t simply going to hand Laney over to Cassie without getting something in return.

summary

Seventeen-year-old, Eric, is a kick-butt squire to the most revered knight in Fallhollow. Well he would be if Sir Trogsdill allowed him to do anything even remotely awesome. Determined to prove his worth, Eric sets out to find the mythical paladin summoned to protect the realm from the evil lurking nearby.

Sixteen-year-old, David, spends his days collecting school honors, winning archery tournaments, and trying not to fall in love with his scrappy best friend, Charlotte.

Right when things start to get interesting, he is whisked away to the magical realm of Fallhollow where everyone thinks he’s some sort of paladin destined to fulfill a two-hundred-year-old prophecy. He’s supposed to help kill a dragon with some sort of magic key. The same key that happens to adorn the neck of an annoying squire who’s too wrapped up in proving himself to be much help to anyone.

With egos as big as the dragon they need to destroy, Eric and David must get over themselves, or watch everything they know and love, burn.

YES, WE HAVE JENNY HERE WITH IS TODAY!!!

applause

And just guess- Annelise, dear, we know you asked her to tell us 5 interesting facts about her lovely book and that’s very unoriginal of you.

hannah montana miley cyrus true

But I love learning about the backstage of books and Jenny indulged me on her own way, so I’m happy! Thanks, Jenny! And now I’ll let her talk about In the Shadow of the Dragon King’s backstage!

What a great topic, Annelise. Since I have addressed the 5 interesting facts (in some fashion)about my book  in other posts, I’ll take on 5 interesting facts about the book writing progress.

 1) I never, ever write without chocolate at my fingertips. I prefer Lindor truffles but any sort of chocolate will do. The brain doesn’t function without chocolate.

 2) I always re-write the beginning of my novel at least 5 times before I am happy with it. Sometimes it ends up changing the entire novel. Thus is why I need more chocolate.

 3) Writing the middle of the book is always the hardest for me. That’s when I start thinking my writing should find its way into a garbage can and be set afire. It’s the point in a novel where I begin questioning why I’m even writing. Thankfully, I have a 21-year-old son who is a dragon and fantasy nut like me to bounce ideas off of. Having that in-person sounding board is priceless. Scary because our brains are equally twisted, but priceless just the same.

 4) I hate plotting my stories. I know how I want things to start, I have an idea as to the progression and I know how I want the story to end, but the journey to get there is part of the writer quest. I like the not knowing. I like to be surprised by my characters. Some of the best passages I’ve written have come from some weird place in my mind that I had no idea even existed. It’s pretty cool, actually. I reward myself with chocolate. 

 5) Writing in a bad/sad mood is a no no. My brain refuses to utter one word if I’m in a funk. I used to think that if I wrote while I was upset or sad, then I could write some incredible passages about my characters when they felt the same way. Not. So, I go for a walk or a bike ride. The fresh air clears the mind, the soul, the spirit. If the blues hit me at night, I wander off into a video game, or mindless t.v. until the funk passes. Then I eat more chocolate and put my fingers to the keyboard. It is the way of things for this quirky fantasy author.

And there you have it. Five interesting facts about the writing process. Now have some chocolate.  What do you prefer? Dark or milk?  

Thank you for having me Annelise. It was fun.

I LOVE CHOCOLATE, my favorite is with milk! Other flavors that I love include mint, strawberries, hazelnuts, coconuts and white chocolate ❤ Yup, I love chocolate, haha! Thanks so much for taking the time to be here today!! I loved your facts 😀

AND GUESS WHAT I ASKED HER TO DO?! Annelise, dear, you always ask the same thing to authors, so we already know that you asked her to tell you 5 interesting facts about her series and/or writing process.

hannah montana miley cyrus true.gif

But I always ask the same thing because I love learning backstage stories and fun facts about books! So let’s enjoy Nicole’s ride, okay? 🙂

5 Fun Bonus Facts about The Dragonrider Chronicles!

 1) It’s about the riders, not the dragons.

I understand that, being a fantasy series, people are interested in the dragons. Who wouldn’t be? But this story is and has always been about the riders, their lives, and their struggles.

 2) The two “champion” fighters from each side are both women.

Jaevid may be the main character, but he’s not the best fighter. With Beckah “Seraph” Derrick fighting alongside Icarus for Maldobar and Araxie, princess of the gray elves, remaining dominant over the other warriors from Luntharda – these ladies mean business!

 3) Jaevid is gray elf royalty.

Among the gray elves, royal bloodlines are traced through the mothers rather than the fathers, as is customary for human monarchies. Jaevid’s mother was a princess, sister to Erandur, the current King of Luntharda. Despite being an illegitimate child, since he was kept and raised by his birth mother, he would be able to retain his noble title of prince. Jaevid’s own mother could have held the title of queen if she had not been chosen as lapiloque. That sacred calling supersedes all royal duties and so the crown inevitably passed to her brother, instead.

 4) Jace is the only dragonrider to have been recruited from prison.

Yep, you read that right. He’s the ultimate rehabilitation story. After a rocky past as an orphan and a criminal, Jace was offered a place in the dragonrider’s academy because of his skill with the blade. It saved him from being hung, but even more so, it revealed that he wasn’t too far gone. Sile is the only one who knew about Jace’s questionable past, but agreed to keep it a secret since Jace was trying to turn over a new leaf and make a new life for himself as a dragonrider.

 5) Sile and Ulric were best friends.

Before his heinous act of stealing the god stone, Ulric was a very different man – and not so different from Jaevid. His memories are now skewed and it’s difficult to say just how much of his life he actually remembers. But one thing is certain, Sile still cares greatly for his friend. That is the reason he has found it so difficult to treat Jaevid as a student and not a family member – because Ulric was like a brother to him.

Am I the only one that just HAS TO read this series right now?! That was awesome, thanks so much, Nicole ❤ ❤

Emerge, from Tobi Easton (Mer Chronicles #1)

Emerge banner.png

Hi, there! Welcome to a very fangirl review involving mermaids! ❤ Of course I’m talking about Emerge, first book in the Mer Chronicles series from Tobi Easton, the new mermaid pearl in the bookish realm! (You saw what I did there, haha!) Chapter by Chapter organized this cool release day for the book and I’ve received my copy from Month9Books in exchange for an honest review, so I united both posts into only one, haha! Let’s do this!! ❤

 the story

Lia is literally a fish out of the water. Being a teenager is complicated, but being a teenager that is also a mermaid – and one that has never lived on the sea – is way worse. She can’t even confess to her high school crush, Clay Ericson, and tell him how handsome his smile is, as he is a human. Never mind the fact that her parents want her to fit into the human world, Lia still is forbidden to date one.

For one year, Lia was in control of her emotions. She put distance between herself and Clay, focused on studying and keeping her legs firmly on the ground – literally. She wasn’t happy, but wasn’t unhappy either, as this is just how things are for her race since the disaster with The Little Mermaid. Yup, that one.

Until Mel becomes the new girl and an octopus on Clay, with her hands and body all over him. It’s beyond painful for Lia to watch them together, but there is nothing she can do to compete with a human girl… Which Mel totally isn’t.

Over Lia’s dead body that she will allow another mermaid to play with Clay’s feelings.

The war is on.

the analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

First things first: OMG EMERGE IS SO GOOD I LOVED IT SO MUCH I CAN’T STOP FANGIRLING ABOUT IT AND I APOLOGIZE TO MY OFFLINE FRIENDS FOR BEING UNSUFERABLE TODAY BUT I CAN’T STOP TALKING ABOUT EMERGE! It was such an amazing and heartwarming book! Without any doubt, Emerge is one of the best YA books that I’ve read! Also, it officially stole the position of best mermaid book that I’ve already read, but unfortunately there wasn’t many participants on that contest (I’ve only read three mermaid books besides Emerge, that was my fourth. A SHAME, I KNOW!). Tobi did a marvelous job and I have so many technical questions that I wish I could talk to Caspian! And date him. And live in Emerge’s universe forever. *sigh* FIVE STARS!

And yes, this is going to be one of those fangirling all over reviews.

friends jumping happy

The narrative style was first person from Lia’s point of view all the time and I can’t express how much surprised I am with myself that I liked Lia so much. Even when she screwed up! I’ll talk more about her personality in a bit, but I really would love to congratulate Easton on making me love her female YA protagonist, as this is hard to happen, haha! Also, the writing style was very good. The reader feels like Lia is their own consciousness and that she is theirs. It’s so easy to just close my eyes and picture myself standing beside her as things go on. She managed to be observant and focused all at once. Lia takes all her surroundings without forgetting that she’s on a mission, having a conversation or just relaxing. Characters like Lia and writers like Easton are the ones that transform writing and reading in acts of magic.

you're wonderful

The plot was very good. Simple, but good. There were minor twists during it, but nothing that blows the mind away. Since day one of Mel in our tails [haha], I knew she was trouble and she indeed was trouble until the very end. I really liked to see how Easton developed the story, the romance and the characters’ relationships. There is no instalove, as Lia and Clay have known each other for one year before the book starts, and there is no amorous triangle, as we know how deep Caspian’s feelings for Lia are and she makes a point of leaving him forever friendzoned (and now I decided that this is a word. I’m a rebel lol). And have I mentioned how much I loved Easton’s construction of the Mer world?

tumblr_nff5xlWpi31qeclafo1_500

I did, I loved it and I need more! When can I get another book? 😀

I'm waiting

Now, the characters.

Have I mentioned how awesome is Lia?? SHE IS FABULOUS! Seriously. She’s perfect in all her imperfection, besides being a strong and dutiful protagonist – two rare things in female main characters in YA. She puts her family well-being above her own just as much as a teenager can manage and she sticks with what she believes, but also loves to learn new things and see new places. She can be both dutiful and a freedom lover. HOW DID YOU MANAGED THAT, EASTON?!

let me love you

And then there are her males. The childhood best friend and my future husband, Caspian, and the not-so-far-from-actually-being charmed prince, Clay. Clay is human and Lia knows they can’t be together, that they don’t have a future for many reasons, but the previous year holds many events that made inevitable for Lia to fall for Clay despite everything. Clay is the really good boy that acts like he’s bad type, which I personally also find very hot, haha! But who really enchanted me was Caspian, who also was mer. He is so amazingly intelligent and handsome and a merman and we have so much in common! (Many of my offline friends will tell you that I am actually a mermaid in disguise, as I have a strong bound with the sea and the water element overall since I’m a child, haha! Funny thing is that I’m a Leo, hmmm… Caspian and I are bound to be a thing!

Lia’s sisters are also a handful! Em is the strict one, the twins are the wild ones and Lia is the balance. She’s not that strict and not that wild, haha! I felt like I belonged so hard in her family that now I want to go and live with them! 😦

Now, my favorite part ok, not really, but I loved it a lot: Lia’s cousin, Amy. She lives Above with Lia’s family and she has a sweet and cute secret that I actually squealed when was revealed, haha!

anna kendrick squealing.gif

I can’t say more due spoilers, but believe me: the small things will surprise you in Emerge.

Oh, and can I just tell how sweet was the romance between Lia and Clay? IT WAS SO SWOON AND SHIP WORTHING! I loved to see them together and am really satisfied with how things turned out to be, haha!

these are the moments that make life worth living

Overall, if you love mermaids, YA, strong females and a book swoon worthy, you need to read Emerge now! FORGET THAT I HAVE A BLOG AND THAT INTERNET EXISTS ALTOGETHER UNTIL YOU ARE FINISHED AND THEN, PLEASE COME BACK AND FANGIRL WITH ME ABOUT IT!!! ❤

The Story

(Goodreads blurb)

Patient Twenty-nine.

A monster roams the halls of Soothing Hills Asylum. Three girls dead. 29 is endowed with the curse…or gift of perception. She hears messages in music, sees lyrics in paintings. And the corn. A lifetime asylum resident, the orchestral corn music is the only constant in her life.

Mason, a new, kind orderly, sees 29 as a woman, not a lunatic. And as his belief in her grows, so does her self- confidence. That perhaps she might escape, might see the outside world.

But the monster has other plans. The missing girls share one common thread…each was twenty-nine’s cell mate.

Will she be next?

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

I was really pinning to read this book, as it promised me everything that I usually love in a book: asylums, historical romance, fearless females, mystery and a touch of paranormal to all of it. I can’t complain, I received it all, but the package was… Disappointing. On chapter three, I already knew what was going on and what the big mystery was. Also, the writing style proved to be not quite my cup of tea, too rough and sudden, making the story slow for me. I still had a good time, but The Requiem Red had so much potential and gave little back… Therefore, I’ll rate it three stars 🙂

The narrative style was first person with switching points of view. Almost all main characters get a chance to narrate the story and I like that, as I always knew exactly what was happening. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to connect with anyone on the book, so once again I didn’t care what happened to them 😦 They were well built enough and both Jules and Jane are strong females, I can’t complain.

As to the plot, as I said, it had a lot of wasted potential. I didn’t really like how things went and the author’s writing style wasn’t very fluid, so the story dragged a lot to me. As I mentioned, I figured everything out too quickly and, while this usually doesn’t bother me, today I could foresee even the how it was going to be done. That was were I became totally detached from the book 😦

im-the-worst1

The characters were an interesting bunch. I really liked Jules and Jane, just like their romantic pairs – that shall remain unnamed as none made it to my list and due spoilers. The girls do pretty kick ass stuff during The Requiem Red and I really like how they grow up, but… Yeah, no feelings on my part, for good or bad.

The strongest point on this story is the historical accuracy that Chapman shows at the asylum. I’ve always been a hard fan of deadly and awful deeds of the humanity and the asylum fever is one of my favorite topics, along the medieval torture methods, witch hunts and abandoned places with terrible histories. So I was in a conflicted state of mind between pity and fascination every time the “treatments” and everyday life were portrayed on The Requiem Red. Also, the paranormal element was very nice too ❤

am i weird yeah but so what everybodys weird boys talking.gif
I’m weird, yeah.

Overall, if you enjoy historical romances with asylum settings, I highly recommend you to give The Requiem Red a try. But do not expect an elaborate romance, because the risk of disappointment is high.

3star

Thanks so much for reading my review and thanks again to Month9Books for the review copy!

Find the diary, break the curse, step through The Looking Glass!

Fifteen-year-old Alice Montgomery wakes up in the lobby of the B&B where she has been vacationing with her family to a startling discovery: no one can see or hear her. The cheap desk lights have been replaced with gas lamps and the linoleum floor with hardwood and rich Oriental carpeting. Someone has replaced the artwork with eerie paintings of Elizabeth Blackwell, the insane actress and rumored witch who killed herself at the hotel in the 1880s. Alice watches from behind the looking glass where she is haunted by Elizabeth Blackwell. Trapped in the 19th-century version of the hotel, Alice must figure out a way to break Elizabeth’s curse—with the help of Elizabeth’s old diary and Tony, the son of a ghost hunter who is investigating the haunted B&B—before she becomes the inn’s next victim.
