Wrap Up

In October, I didn’t manage to read so many books as in September because of my Game of Thrones Challenge, but I read all the mangas I hadn’t in the previous month in between the bloody pages of GOT, oops! So I’ve read only 6 books… But also 26 volumes of manga, haha!

Top 10 Tuesday: Books that made me cry

Hi, there! Good AFTERNOON! I DID IT, IT IS ON TIME AND EARLIER! I DESERVE A BIG HIGH FIVE!

Ahem.

It’s Tuesday, so it’s Top 10 Tuesday day! This meme is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and my theme today is Books that Made me Cry because I can’t seem to follow everyone else and do the right theme of the week lol

So, I’d like to start this post by saying that I usually don’t cry reading. No, I haven’t got an heart of ice or anything like that. I just purposefully avoid reading books that I’m sure that will leave me utterly miserable and struggling to keep breathing between my sobs.

You see, when I was 14, I had a severe case of depression due family problems. One of the things that helped me going back on track and learning how to cope with my mind was reading – a pastime that has accompanied me since my birth, may I add. Ever since, I started to avoid obviously sad books like The Fault on Our Stars and such. It’s nothing personal, it is just one of the things I had to do to keep myself sane at the time and it is a habit that stuck up. I can deal with some depressing parts in a book, sad moments and deaths. But downward tragedy all the time hits too close to home, so no, thanks 🙂

All that being said, I still cry in books, a lot! And not only tears of sorrow, so I divided by ten books by type of crying – because I’m that much of an organizer freak 🙂

Sad tears

 1) The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak

This was the only purposeful sad book that I read knowing that it may end badly and I don’t regret it. I read it on 2007, when I was 12 or 13, and it was a recommendation of a sales’ guy from one of my favorite bookstores at the time, so I loved it. I don’t see myself re-reading it, though.

 2) The Last Olympian, by Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson #5)

You know, the series was ending, one of the most awesome characters died and I was feeling too overwhelmed by all the twists and awesomeness. And I still didn’t know that The Lost Hero was a kind of sequel to Percy Jackson series lol

 3) Daughter of Darkness, by L. J. Smith (Nightworld #2) [REVIEW HERE!]

Again, the fault is on the twist in the end. There isn’t anything downward sad about this book, but I thought the choice of the protagonists so tragic, brave and beautiful that it got me tearing up a bit for their destiny. Again, no deaths, no tragedy. I JUST FELT LIKE CRYING, I’M A REBEL!

4) All In With The Duke, by Ava March (Gambling On Love #1) [REVIEW HERE!]

Yes, you have read it correctly. My diva, my muse, made me cry. I just couldn’t see a happy ending for Max and Tristan in the first time that I read this book and I WAS DYING. Sometimes, I still cry near the end, haha!

5) Cambridge Fellows series, by Charlie Cochrane

Honestly? I don’t even know why I kept reading this series for so long. Despite being an historical gay romance series, the writing style wasn’t my cup of tea, the characters were pretty shallow and the drama got heavier and heavier. I lost count of how many times I was reading this as I was on my way to college and I started to weep in pure agony for the main couple. I just wanted to grab Charlie by her shoulders and shake her until she came back to her senses and stopped that madness, haha!

Frustration tears

Fun fact about me: when I’m very sad, I grow quiet and simply won’t speak or do anything. I become numb. When I’m angry or frustrated to hell, I cry like there is no tomorrow. Therefore, these next books got more tears than the sad books did, haha!

 6) What Lies Within, by James Morrison [REVIEW HERE!]

I really liked this book, but I was so overwhelmed when I got to the end and there were some mysterious lose ends that I broke. I started crying and screaming and swearing, haha! After a calming shower, I couldn’t stop saying to whoever wanted to hear how good and awesome and badass this book is, haha! Strong emotions lol

7) The Heir, by Kiera Cass (The Selection #4) [REVIEW HERE!]

I almost began crying in frustration in the middle of chapter one, when I realized how Eadlyn and I wouldn’t get along. AT. ALL. And yet, Kiera Cass was forcing me to put up with the brat using my love for The Selection and for America as an excuse. Eadlyn drove me so mad that there were a lot of scenes that I read while tearing up in pure and simple frustration. I can’t wait for the nightmare to be over in The Crown…

Beauty tears

8) Chasing Rainbows, by Linda Oaks (The Chasing Series #1) [REVIEW HERE!]

This book was Linda’s debut and my first from her. I was so surprised to see her beautiful writing style, so impressed to see how much Linda seemed to understand me and how much I connected with Addie, the main character, that I found myself emotional in like 60% of my reading time. I took notes of quotes and felt tears down my cheeks. Super cheesy and super true. Just read this book – or any of Linda’s works, really – and you will understand.

9) After Death, by Jacqueline E. Smith (Cemetery Tours #3) [REVIEW HERE!]

Jacqueline’s writing is a piece of art by itself, but there was a scene near the end of this book that was my undoing. It was so emotional, beautiful and meaningful that I started crying and wouldn’t stop, haha! I just wanted to hug my iPad and never let go 🙂

I searched my brain aka my goodreads read shelf for another case of perfection tears, but I think it only happened once so far.

10) CARRY ON, by Rainbow Rowell! [REVIEW HERE!]

This was the first and only time that I cried because of over perfection. And I’ve read my fair of books for someone of only 21. I scared my best friend, her maid and her mom with my crying crisis and book hangover after Carry On was over. I simply couldn’t, I needed more, that was too perfect to end. AND I SWEAR THAT THE END IS SWEET AND HAPPY AND CUTE! I’m the weird one that cries over… Perfection, as it seems.

I know, I know. That’s why I’ll just thank you for reading and stop writing now, haha!

All time? DAMON SALVATORE. ALWAYS. FOREVER. In case you live in another dimension and don’t know who I’m talking about, he is from The Vampire Diaries series 🙂

Hmm… That’s a tough one. I think I’ll have to go with Bella Swan, from Twilight. I just hate her so much, haha!

If you could date any fictional character, who would it be and why?

I hate to sound repetitive, but it will always be Damon.

If you could change a character in any way, what would it be?

I would change Clara’s denseness on Shearwater, Part One, from Derek Murphy (a.k.a. D. S. Murphy). Honestly, that girl drove me nuts until she found out she was a freaking mermaid, haha!

What character made all the wrong choices and didn’t add anything to the book?

Eadlyn. I apologize to all the fans of The Heir, but I hated Eadlyn too much, haha!

Besides, the cover for The Crown is giving me nightmares.

Which character was the best villain whom you love to hate?

Ash, from Secret Vampire and Daughters of Darkness. This guy is trash, but oh-so-beautiful trash… I swear he is Damon’s lost cousin, haha!

Cash, from Stripped with the Vampire ❤ That guy just ruled sidekicking, haha!

What is your favorite fictional romantic relationship?

What character did you think was the strongest?

From my recent reads, I’d say Whyborne, from Widdershins. He faced many fears in the book and resisted many temptations. He is a true hero ❤

I didn’t finish the book yet, but I already have a new chosen one: Integrity, from Gifted Thief. HONESTLY, THIS GIRL.

Match Made in Mondays: I entered a weekly meme!

Hello, there! Can you believe this?! I just started to do my dear friend Audrey’s Monday memes, called Match Made in Mondays! I’m so excited! I hope I can do this often, haha!

Audrey is from the Forwards and Bookwords and the theme this week is: THIS CHARACTER from THIS BOOK + THIS CHARACTER from a DIFFERENT BOOK shipped (Despite potentially being from completely different worlds, what two characters do you just know would make an awesome couple?).

I confess that I usually don’t mix characters from books on a loving fashion. I think: “oh, this boy and this girl would rock ass being on the same school/work team” or “oh my, those two would be awesome buddies”, but never with love in the middle. Now I have to, haha!

I guess I would love to see Eadlyn, from The Heir, by Kiera Cass, struggling with Teag, from Secrets and High Spirits, from Lou Harper, because I think Eadlyn needs some lessons.

 

 

I know what you’re thinking: but wasn’t Teag gay and all? Oh, yes, without any doubts and Bruce can tell you better than me, but the thing is that Teag is a control freak just like Eadlyn. It would be good for her ego to be put in her place more often than not by Teag. Or maybe both would kill each other’s to no ends and Bruce would have to attend to 35 boys. Either way, the outcome seems happy to me, hahaha! Besides, love born from hate is always hotter, haha!

But if Audrey asked me the same question on movie matters, my answer would pop out in two seconds: Jack Frost, from Rise of Guardians, and Elsa, from Frozen. Is she older? Yes. Is he immature? Yes. Are both totally cool without love? Yes. BUT THEY WOULD BE AMAZING FOR ME, SO I DON’T CARE!

The Heir, from Kiera Cass (The Selection #4)

Hello! Here we have another late book review from a very dear author: The Heir, fourth book on The Selection series, by Kiera Cass. I have this book since June, when it was released here on Brazil, but only in September I found an English edition. I’m spoiled with books: if I start reading the series in one language, I don’t like switching (I don’t speak many languages; I’m fluent on Brazilian Portuguese and English and can read Spanish and French, but that’s all, haha!). So I bought the Brazilian hardcover edition of The Heir but only read it when I bought my mass-market paperback edition. So spoiled.

The Story

Eadlyn was born with her destiny planned for her: she would be the first queen of Iléa. She was born to be great, to carry the world on her shoulders. She was the daughter of beloved America and Maxton. And it sucked. Eadlyn never could be a normal girl, being trained since birth to one single purpose in life and her destiny frightened her: why nobody thought of asking her what she wanted?

As if her daily life wasn’t hard enough, she finds herself trapped into her own Selection with 35 boys very excited to win her hand and the crown, running around her home and invading her privacy. Could things get worse?

Turns out that they can.

The analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion while reading the book 🙂

I loved The Selection series. Really, madly. I read the three main books plus The Guard and The Prince in 5 studying/working days, in the time that I still did both – now I only study. I felt the series was very well completed when I finished The One, so you can imagine my surprise when I read that Kiera was working on a new book for it. I didn’t knew what to expect, honestly. The reviews were bipolar, the cover featured a different girl, I was so confused. Then I read it and it had a funny effect on me. I loved it at first, like I was enchanted while reading. I hated Eadlyn and still do, she’s just a bratty ungrateful and immature girl. But, as soon as I finished it, I gave it 5 stars on Goodreads, I was biting my nails to see what would happen on the “final” book for the series – after my experience with The One, I don’t believe in Cass anymore, haha! And, honestly? If she keeps releasing stuff from The Selection, I will keep reading it because I’m that delusional. Anyway, back to the point: now I think the book is worth 3 stars for a lot of reasons and I will tell the non-spoiler ones now.

I like Cass narratives. After 4 books and two short stories, I’m pretty sure of that. In The Selection, it is always in first person and with Eadlyn’s not different. As I have already commented before, this can be good and bad. I personally am not a fan of first person’s narratives because there’s always little holes on the plot. Of course I’m not holding this aspect against The Heir because there will be another book in the series, but it is frustrating. And you can’t have a break from the main character, so if you hate the person, too bad for you. It was the case with Eadlyn. I HATE HER. HATE. HATE. HATE. I wish I could make my typing even larger for this announcement, haha! But all in due time.

I loved the plot. A Selection with 35 boys?! COUNT. ME. IN. I liked the idea, it was nice to see America, Maxton, Maureen and Lucy again. A future queen with id problems at the age of 18 with a twin brother and other small ones? Come on, it’s interesting. And I was dying to know how Iléa fared without the castes. Oh, well. I still love the plot, Eadlyn was the problem. Yes, I will complain through the whole review and I regret nothing 🙂 But I have to say that the end was SO HUSHED. WHY?! Having another book following this on the series is not a good excuse and I hated what happened to America. One star was lost here.

Characters: EADLYN. EADLYN. EADLYN. That’s how the book goes. She is so selfish, self-centered, immature, bratty, spoiled and bossy that her thoughts are all about her. Seriously. I won’t deny that she grows up during the book, but oh, the road is very long for her. And the worst part is that she thinks herself perfect. No comments. But calm down, I can say things that I like about her as well. She saw the selection as an experiment with boys and I thought this was amazing, haha! She is not easily impressed and this helps to put some of the men on their places. She has awesome quotes when she’s being human. She fails and I love to see her failing. Failure is the most productive way of learning and Eadlyn needs it.

Now, the other characters: I blame America and Maxton for Eadlyn’s shitty personality. I still love them as a couple (I was never a big fan of Max’s, but I LOVE AMERICA), but they never put any limit to her and always bowed to her wills. There you go. I fell in love with half of the Selection boys and can’t remember their names anymore, haha! I hated Josie because I once had this friend when I was a child that copied EVERYTHING that I wore. And it wasn’t inspiration, it was COPY and I stopped talking to her when she started to tell people that her name was the same as mine *eye rolls* So, I understand Eadlyn’s irritation. Kile was brilliant and I hope he can do better than Eadlyn.

A pause for a cover appreciation. I love The Selection covers and Eadlyn is perfect on this one.

This book for sure was made for the fans of the series, as it wouldn’t convince anyone from outside of the fandom to picking it up. Cass could and already did better. I hope the next book leaves me breathless again and not for a limited time only, like happened with The Eadlyn Heir. That should have been the title, haha!

The Witch of Lime Street: Séance, Seduction, and Houdini in the Spirit World, by David Jaher

The supernatural beliefs of the old also are another field of highly interest for me, so this book is a must-have for me ❤

Cleopatra’s Shadows, by Emily Holleman

Ancient Egypt and a good intrigue. I’m in!

Luther and Katharina: A Novel of Love and Rebellion, by Jody Hedlund

I’m Lutheran, so I can’t wait to see what the author made of his story with Katharina ❤

The Tournament at Gorlan (Ranger’s Apprentice: The Early Years #1), by John Flanagan

I started the Ranger series by John Flanagan earlier this year (check out the review for the first book here!) and I’m in love! I didn’t like this cover, but oh well. The book will be awesome!

Good Earl Gone Bad (Lords of Anarchy #2), by Manda Collins

You can give any historical romance set in 19th century England to read, I will love it. Sad truth.

I didn’t read his previous works, but this book sounds nice. I like fairy tales gone bad and inspired by fairy tales books!

The Witches: Salem, 1692, by Stacy Schiff

This is another book that talks about the beliefs of the old, so I need to read it. I talked a bit about my weird romantic notions on this review.

September Wrap Up and Book Haul!

Hello, there! I know, it’s been a while, but I’m on my last semester at college and my graduation is on DECEMBER. You can imagine that my life is a mess right now, haha!

Anyway, let’s talk about September! It was a more or less book month for me, as I am on the middle of a major slump, thanks to the books that I have to read for my dissertation – I’m two chapters away from being ready! I can’t wait to finish it! – so I read in a good pace in the beginning of September and stopped in the middle of the month, reading only some mangas and a Disney Comic Book

My book haul was much better this month: I bought a total of 8 books: 4 paperbacks, 3 mangas and 1 comic book 😀 Check it out:

• A Mídia nas Constituições do Brasil: Respeito e Desrespeito – Erasmo de Freitas Nuzzi (a Brazilian journalistic book, so I don’t know if I will be reviewing it or not after reading it, haha!)

• volume 23 of XXX-Holic, by Clamp

(now I have the whole Wish collection! Yay! *–*)

This was the first time an author sent me a physical copy of a book, because I life in Brazil, haha! It was so special that I cried…
