Veva Matron is a feisty girl raging with suppressed anger and distrust of men.

Solis Cronus is a blindingly beautiful, Greek god of a guy, who likes to play women.

An electric hatred thunders through each of them about the other until one night, lightning strikes. A world of secrets reveals the destiny of two at odds with one another, and clouds the line between love and hate. Can a lively girl find calm in the stormy tension of a boy made of sunshine and sin?

The mythical tale of Zeus and Hera reignites in this modern interpretation of enemies to lovers. Full of flirty sexual angst and teasing temptation, Solis might be the one man who can extinguish Veva’s angry fire and ignite a different sort of flame: desire.

excerpt

“Back up for a moment,” Blake said, and all heads turned to him. “Getting the lotus seeds and the milk from Helios’s cattle sounds crazy, but feasible. But the blood of a slain hydra? I know we’ve been practicing with our powers and weapons for a month—and we’ve gotten pretty good at it, too—but the hydra is one of the most dangerous creatures out there. Slaying it was one of Hercules’s twelve labors. What if one of us gets hurt? Or worse?”

I didn’t know if I was imagining it or not, but I could have sworn that his gaze drifted to mine when he’d said that last part. It was like he was saying that he didn’t want me getting hurt. My cheeks heated at the thought, and I focused on my hands, unable to look at Blake without my feelings for him showing on my face for everyone else to see.

“Hercules was one person,” Chris pointed out. “We’re five.”

“Actually, Hercules didn’t slay the hydra on his own,” Kate said. “He needed help from his nephew.”

“But neither of them had powers like ours.” Chris rubbed his hands together, his confidence not wavering. “We’ve got this.”

“Oh, I know we can slay the hydra.” Blake crossed his arms, as if offended that anyone had thought he’d doubted our abilities. “We just need to make sure that we all get back here alive.”

 excerpt

As they neared the top, a shape came together in front of her. A man laid spread eagle and strapped in chains. His face was pleasing to her eyes, even scrunched up. His beard wasn’t scraggly like Epimetheus’ was and his muscles contorted with barely restrained power. She imagined what he would have looked like if he wasn’t covered in blood. Her stomach somersaulted at the beautiful image.

Every time he screamed, the fireball above their heads grew for a moment and illuminated his shadow. A giant raven sat upon his chest, pecking away at bare intestines. She had seen birds, but never a black one that was almost as large as she was.

It glanced over at Pandora. Its unfeeling eyes glowed white as if it had captured a tiny bit of sun inside its pupils. Green liquid leaked out the side of the raven’s mouth. It foamed at the mouth like it was rabid. Pandora bit her finger nails.

A river of blood pooled from Prometheus’ stomach where his intestines had been ripped to shreds. The raven bent down to peck more inside his belly. He devoured little bits of pink innards. Prometheus was dying or being eaten alive at least.

Pandora tugged on Epimetheus’ arm. “We should help him.”

Tears formed in Epimetheus’ eyes. “I’ve tried; we can’t.”

“Why not? He’ll die if we don’t do something.”

Pandora could barely breathe. She felt helpless and afraid.

The man screamed and Epimetheus wrapped his arms around Pandora, pinning her to the ground. Fire exploded around them and Epimetheus’ eyes rolled back in pain. The storm of fire above them had gotten so large that a piece of it had escaped and struck Epimetheus’ body.

They both stood when it was over. Blisters covered Epimetheus’ back where his clothes had burned away. She touched the damaged skin gently. He roared in response and she jumped back. The skin sewed itself together before her widened eyes.

She had seen Epimetheus attacked by a bear once. It had entered their cavern in the middle of the night. It had ripped his chest open, but he had regenerated in the same way.

“His name is Prometheus,” Epimetheus said. “He’s already died many times. Titans like us regenerate, but that doesn’t stop us from feeling pain.”

Their eyes met.

“Why is this man important to you?” Pandora asked.

“He’s my brother,” Epimetheus said. “Zeus chained him here to punish him.”

Pandora crossed her arms. “And you want me to feel sorry for him? He must have done something terrible if Zeus thought he deserved this.”

Epimetheus shook his head. “You have a lot to learn.”

He grabbed her hand and she clutched it tightly. Although Prometheus was restrained, the fire bursting from him was not. Pandora was scared her skin would melt. The crackling of the fire above their heads was deafening and the heat made her eyes feel dry.

Epimetheus read her mind. “It’s not as bad when he’s further from death.”

“I thought gods couldn’t die,” Pandora whispered.

“We can’t. Our souls do not travel to the Underworld like they do with humans. But our bodies can become so damaged that we black out for hours and lose our heartbeats until we are able to regenerate again. It’s a type of death, but not a permanent one.”

They were near the edge of the cliff, next to Prometheus. It overlooked the places they had traveled since they left the cave. Bright specks from campfires decorated the path. They glowed against the darkness like grounded stars.

“Prometheus suffers because of all those people who live down there,” Epimetheus said. “The reason they have warmth and food is why he’s being tortured, but none of them care anymore.”

Pandora’s chest constricted painfully. This couldn’t be true. Zeus had been such a kind god, explaining things to her slowly when she didn’t understand them. He wasn’t capable of this.

“Some of them cared at first,” Epimetheus said. “But when they tried to loosen his bonds, the crow would devour them instead. Unlike Prometheus, they wouldn’t be able to rise from the dead the next day. He begged them to stop, insisting that he could handle it, but I don’t like the way they flaunt their fires in front of him. They should be ashamed of what they have, rather than callous.

“Every time someone lights a fire, Prometheus dies a little faster that day. It’s why he usually dies at night-people light their campfires and the raven pecks harder. Prometheus gets upset from the pain and those bad feelings make the raven peck harder as well. He dies.

“If all of the humans were to put out their fires and vow to never use them again, Zeus might let him go, but they won’t. Prometheus says it’s because they die without fire, but I think it’s because they’re selfish.

“This is why, as my wife, you are never to light a fire. Fire is his curse, not our blessing.”

Pandora nodded her head, chewing her lip.

The raggedy pile of a Titan lying in front of them moaned. He had also shrunk himself. It was strange that he should care about making humans more comfortable when he was being tortured like this.

He spoke and his voice was hoarse. “Epimetheus, is that you?”

Prometheus cried out and the fire above their heads grew larger. Epimetheus pushed Pandora close to the ground just in case.

The fire died down and Epimetheus knelt next to his brother. The bitterness melted from his face and gentleness took its place as if he were gazing at a beloved pet or baby. He stroked Prometheus’ cheek and the fireballs burning above them calmed. “Shh! Don’t speak! You need to save your strength!”

“Please don’t be angry.” Prometheus’ eyes glowed with love in the light. “To see humanity, my creation, at peace, makes this suffering worth it. I’m glad Zeus chained me here. It allows me to witness all the good I’ve done.”

“Don’t speak that way,” Epimetheus said. “Nothing is worth seeing you like this.”

“Humanity is worth it,” Prometheus said. “The way their skin glows in the sun is the envy of the gods. They’re beautiful.”

Pandora looked down at her arms; the silver flecks in her skin shone in the firelight. Most of the time they weren’t visible, except when the sun was bright or she was near a campfire. She had heard once that humans had specks of gold in their skin, during a time when they could tell the future and walked among gods. Pandora wished she was from that time, rather than from the age of silver, where the wealth and gifts of Mount Olympus dwelled just beyond her reach. But humans had sunk to a new low ever since Zeus took over, which was why their skin had silver in it now. If only she knew the future, maybe she’d be able to understand her world a little better.

“Humans give the gods something to live for and take care of,” Prometheus continued. “They create and love like we do. They are not evil. It’s Zeus that is. Never trust anything Zeus gives you. It will lead to your downfall.”

Pandora’s forehead wrinkled in confusion. She had been a gift from Zeus to Epimetheus. Was he insinuating that she was untrustworthy? How dare he! He didn’t even know her!

Prometheus was sweating. His breathing grew heavier and he went into a seizure.

“It’s time! He’s dying again,” Epimetheus shouted.

Prometheus passed out and the inferno above their heads swirled like a tornado. Pandora shielded her face as ashes rained on her. She could feel her arm hair singeing.

“It’s getting dangerous-we need to go.” Epimetheus’ expression hardened as he wrapped his arms around Pandora. She clutched his chest and let him lead the way.

And it is with great honor that I tell you that Black agreed to stop by the blog! *–*

Thanks so much for being here, Black! And for indulging me and revealing 5 interesting facts about your novel! 😀 But enough chit chat and let’s see what Black has to say about Pandora’s Mistake! ❤

Five Interesting Things About My Novel, Pandora’s Mistake…

5)Pandora was the Eve (think Adam and Eve) of greek mythology. She was the first woman ever. Just like with Eve, the myths say that she was the downfall of man.

4)Pandora was the first human woman, but she wasn’t married to a human. Zeus gave her to a titan named Epimetheus. Most people who have heard of Pandora do not know her husband’s name. (Annelise: That’s very true, I didn’t know that! =O)

3)Zeus didn’t create man according to greek mythology. The titan, Prometheus, who also was the one who gave fire to humans, was the one who made men. He’s one of the characters in my book. He’s punished every day for these acts by a raven who pecks away at his liver.

2)Before the Olympians of greek mythology, there were the titans. They were the gods before any of the Olympians were born, but Zeus overthrew them and punished several of them. A lot of them still existed in the mythology and several of them are characters in my book, Pandora’s Mistake.

1)Pandora’s box wasn’t a box, it was a jar. That’s what the originally version says and I used that version in my book.

Awesome, right?! I can’t wait to devour my copy of Pandora’s Mistake!! 😀 Again, thanks so much for being here and indulging me, Black!!

Daughter of Chaos, from Jen McConnel (Red Magic #1)

Hi, there! Welcome to the last post of the day 😀 It’s been a while since my last book review, but here we go again 😀 Blame season 7 from Supernatural for sucking my soul on the last three or four days. Today’s book was received from Chapter by Chapter as a preparation for an upcoming book tour in exchange for an honest review. I’m talking about Daughter of Chaos, first book in the Red Magic trilogy, by Jen McConnel! 😀

IMG_8639.JPG
from my Instagram 😀

The Story

Darlena Agara is one of those people that have deep authority issues, but other than that, she’s your typical teenage witch: problems with the hot ex-boyfriend, a weird best friend, unsure of the path that she will choose to follow with her magic.

Or she was, until no one less than Hecate, the Queen of the Witches, showed up on Lena’s living room and forced her to choose her path there and now. Without a moment lost, Lena chooses the Red path. Okay? Okay.

Except there wasn’t supposed to be a Red path. At Trinity’s school, Lena was taught the three big paths: White Magic, Black Magic and Green Magic. Not a single word about Red in all those years of learning.

To make things worse, everyone starts to panic when Lena’s choice becomes public: she’s graciously expelled from her school, her parents are afraid of her, her best friend is envious of her apparently big power (which Lena is still questioning) and her house becomes a point for Goddesses to appear out of the blue. Okay? Okay.

There is just one little thing that Darlena would really like to know now: what the hell is going on with her life.

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my thoughts and opinion as a reader 🙂

I’m a goner for paranormal/fantasy romances, Mythologies (especially the Greek’s one), witches and a good rebel character. Daughter of Chaos accomplished almost all things, expect that I couldn’t connect with Lena not one single time. I don’t know if I’m getting old to read YA (PLEASE, DON’T BE IT, I LOVE YA) or if we just didn’t hit it off, but I couldn’t. The fact that the book was first person narrated from her point of view just made matters worse and I caught myself rolling my eyes all the time 😦 On the other hand, this book had it’s magical world really well constructed and I loved the way that McConnel portrayed the Gods in general (I even liked Hecate!!), so I had a great time on every scene that Lena was snapping at a God. Overall, it was a good start for a trilogy and kept my interest high enough at the end for me to anticipate reading the next volume, so three stars 🙂

As I said, the narrative was first person styled from Lena’s point of view only. After a good wave of really nice first person narrated books that made me bite my tongue, I was sharply remembered by McConnel why I don’t really like this kind of narrative style. Lena and I just weren’t meant to be and I couldn’t have a break from her. I can’t deny that she grows up during the book, but she didn’t manage to convince me to like her until the end of this volume. Let’s see if she will keep growing on Gods of Chaos, haha! Before I write a whole paragraph for Lena, let’s talk about the plot.

The plot on this book is disguised as simple, but surprised me deeply. On the moment that Lena’s life exploded into chaos [haha], I couldn’t see where the story was going. I won’t say that everything got me by surprise, especially when it involved the character’s destiny, but the directions of the plot always made me widen my eyes and that felt very good! McConnel’s writing style isn’t remarkable and there are a few edit issues, but nothing compromising. Lena made the book lose two stars all by herself, haha!

And speaking of Lena.

avril sighs in exasperation.gif

We started the book with the wrong foot. As soon as I learned why she broke up with her boyfriend, Justin, I rolled my eyes and knew I was dealing with a spoiled child. It was amazing how Lena could be dense, ungrateful and a bitch. It was a good thing that I wasn’t inside the book with her or she would have permanent purple eyes. I can’t deny, she got better towards the end, as she grows up, but Lena still has a long journey until she impresses me.

As a matter of fact, all human characters on this book annoyed me. Well, except Dennis, I guess, but I can’t talk much about the poor kid. Spoilers and everything, sorry. It was too obvious what was going to happen with Justin and then with Rochelle, the best friend. On the other hand, I loved every single God mentioned and presented on this book. My favorites? Hades and Persephone. Hades was the coolest and cutest (yes, you read it right) God ever. I really hope he gets to appear more, I’m in love ❤ Never mind that this is the third time that I fall in love with a Hades representation in a book. Hades alone won a star for Daughter of Chaos, haha!

Also, can we please praise this cover? I’m in love.

daughter of chaos 3d cover.jpg

Overall, this is a nice read to pass the time and I can’t wait to see what comes next in the Red Magic series. If you like awesome Gods, good hot guys, badass witches and mysteries, give this book a go!

3star

That’s it, thank you for reading! Also, thanks to Chapter by Chapter team for providing me this series, I had a good time with the first and am already reading the second volume 😀

Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief, from Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson and the Olympians #1)

Hi, there! AFY, today your blogger is on fire, as all my posts are going live – thank you, February new books ¬¬”

Anyway, we are not here to talk about my failed posting schedule, but to talk about the first book in the Percy Jackson series (is there someone on the world who calls it “the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series”? Like, all fanciness and all? I can’t even picture saying it out loud on the title, haha!), The Lightening Thief 😀 To my shame, I only read this series for the first time last January (I mean 2015 and not last month, haha!). Needless to say that it changed my heart and now I’m a believer. This was one of the books I wish to re-read this year and I can’t wait to squeeze the rest of the series into the other months ❤

IMG_8038
the natural light that I got on this pic makes it look like it’s blured… Sorry, haha!

The Story

I feel a bit silly re-telling a story that everybody knew way before me, but here we go

Percy is a 12-year-old boy without much luck in his life. No matter how hard he tries, disasters seem to follow him anywhere, making the weirdest things happen – and getting him expelled of five schools in a roll. To top everything, he is dyslexic, has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and the worst stepfather of the whole world: Smelly Gabe. And trust me, you don’t want to know the reason behind this lovely nickname.

Until a trip to the beach with his mom, Percy thought his life weird and unlucky, but manageable. But a hurricane totally out of season and a big monster show Percy that things can always get worse. Without any choice, he ends up on the Half-Blood Camp with his best friend Grover – that, by the way, reveals himself as a satyr.

Now, besides being really unlucky, dyslexic and attention deficient, Percy also has to deal with the existence of real (and very angry) Greek gods that are more than willing to use him and the other children at the camp as they please for their own schemes. Percy time has arrived and his life depends on completing divine tasks.

The thing is… Can Percy focus on the gods’ will?

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

When I was younger and this series exploded in the world, I remember reading a synopsis that was so crappy that led me into believing that this was a stupid series. Then the movies came out and I was “sure” It was crap. Sorry if you enjoyed the movies, haha! Then last summer came (again, 2015, not last month) and I was at a friend’s place – yeah, I’m talking about you, Jen! – and she pestered me so much that I said “FINE, I WILL GIVE PERCY JACKSON A GO, NOW SHUT UP”. Or something like that. Her memory is better, she can tell our stories better than me, haha! Anyway, long story short, I was madly in love with Percy Jackson and devoured all five books in a week’s space. And then felt like life didn’t matter anymore because there was no more than five books. You know, same old, same old with us book lovers.

38353-the-feels-gif-vvyf.gif

On my first read, I gave it four stars. I’m officially raising it to five stars now 🙂

The narrative is first person styled from Percy’s point of view only. On the beginning of my first read, it bothered me a little. On my re-read, I think it works. Percy is just like us – you know, our 12-year-old selves – and this makes it so easy for the reader to connect with him. He grew up believing that Greek gods were just random characters from another culture and suddenly has to deal with the living things. Also, the narrative style makes the story funny and light, even on its worse moments.

The plot is complex and full of twists, as there are so many elements to fit into the book. I loved how well Riordan executed it. Percy Jackson is one of the most well written series that I ever read, the kind that you just can’t find a flaw, a lose end, a forgotten character. Seriously, there is nothing to hold against it, haha!

d55e924f9334c3dd0e1fbe6477d1948e.gif
Rick Riordan facing society

Percy is the perfect 12-year-old, in qualities and flaws. It is amazing! Even being 20 when I first read this book, I highly identified with him. Percy is random, observant, kinda lazy, funny and gets real mad when he is accused of doing something he clearly didn’t. (Btw, that was one of Jen’s arguments: “you will love him because he is just like you!”. Damn, she was right! But don’t tell her that, she’ll get cocky.) And he has the natural curiosity of children towards anything he doesn’t know, which is really helpful for the reader that is so new on the real Greek gods world as himself is.

All Riordan’s characters are very well constructed and developed. I call favorites with Annabeth, because she is not a helpless female in the team, Luke, because he is beautiful and skillful and has another secret trait that really attracts me but it would be a huger spoiler to tell, Hades, because he is the best god #justsaying, and Percy’s mom. Okay, but Grover and Quíron in the list. Ugh, I love Percy Jackson’s world!

Naturally, I have to comment on the semi-dystopian world that Riordan created: awesome stuff.

anigif_enhanced-buzz-23726-1387220973-9

Seriously, I have nothing to add to what has been already said. He re-created the Greek gods in such a fashion that is hard to imagine them any different now. It absorbers you and suddenly you’re convinced that you’re a victim of the Mist and that’s why you can’t see the true monster nature of your Math teacher. As I said, I’m a believer, haha!

Overall, I think that everyone that hasn’t already should just pick up this series and give it a go. Forget all about the crappy (sorry) movies and just allow uncle Rick to carry you around ❤

5star

Thank you for reading and thank you Jen, who so vehemently insisted that I should give this series a go ❤ I can’t wait for the next series that you will push through my guts recommend me 😀 And please don’t forget I love you, so there is no need for slapping me after you read this review.

The Merchant and the Clergyman, by Bonnie Dee & Summer Devon

PROJECT_COVER_IMAGE_1._SX800_My ALL TIME FAVORITE FROM ALL THIS LIST! I NEED TO READ THIS BOOK! Ok, sorry. I have it bad from Bonnie and Summer, haha!

Omega (Omega #1), by Lizzy Ford

25198255Sounded interesting and a friend gave it a good review. Let’s see 🙂

Day 27

I’ll Never Let You Go (Morgans of Nashville #3), by Mary Burton

23526241This blurb got me so hard… I love horror thrillers, but read so few of them… A shame!

The Wrong Bride (Highland Weddings #1), by Gayle Callen

24805344Again: give me any historical romance in England, truly lol.

After Alice, by Gregory Maguire

24331115I didn’t read his previous works, but this book sounds nice. I like fairy tales gone bad and inspired by fairy tales books!

The Witches: Salem, 1692, by Stacy Schiff

24819449This is another book that talks about the beliefs of the old, so I need to read it. I talked a bit about my weird romantic notions on this review.

Cold-Hearted Rake (Cold-Hearted Rake #1), by Lisa Kleypas

24431358Yes, another one ❤

Falling Into Bed with a Duke (The Hellions of Havisham #1), by Lorraine Heath

24805225And another ❤

Diamonds are Forever (The Secret Diamond Sisters #3), by Michelle Madow

23168396

I don’t know this series, I just met it actually. My attention was totally draw to this cover and I needed to learn more, haha! The series sound amazing and I want to read them now ❤

Day 31

Drown, by Esther Dalseno

26115647

I met this book on a giveaway at Instagram, it’s mermaid themed. I looove mermaid themed books, but only read one so far. Why? 😦 Besides, it’s a fairy tale gone bad book! *–*

For now, that’s all for October. Another full month for readers! Which is your most anticipated release for this month? 😀
