Pepper Neely is better at this than most, especially because she is in charge of pet sitting all the familiars in her neighborhood. A familiar is a pet magically linked to a witch or warlock. As a gnome, Pepper is no stranger to spells and sorcery. She also knows that, despite their special name, familiars aren’t all that different from regular animals. They get anxious when separated from their people, so Pepper uses her special gnome powers to calm them down. She watches Cranky the high-strung ferret, Frank the laid-back parrot, King Arthur the elderly tortoise, and many others.

Then, something terrible begins happening to the familiars. Someone is stealing their magic! It not only prevents Pepper from communicating with them but breaks their magical connection with their people. When King Arthur’s magic is stolen, his owner’s powers stop working too. Pepper can sense that the tortoise is very scared.

Super Lovers, from Miyuki Abe

Hello, there! It’s me again, back with another late yaoi manga review, from last year, haha! Today’s title is Super Lovers, from mangaka Miyuki Abe 😀

11875713

The Story

Haru is a half-japanese and half-canadian boy that goes to his mom’s place at Canada during one of his summer holidays. There, he meets his new adoptive brother Ren, a very shy, difficult and suspicious little boy. Haru manages to conquer Ren’s attention and affections, to Haru’s mother astonishment, and they all make plans to Ren to go to Japan with Haru and his father.

All was well.

As soon as Haru goes back to Japan, he and his father suffer a serious car accident. Haru lost both father and stepmother that day, along with his memory from that last Summer in Canada. Along with all his feelings for Ren.

That is, until Ren finds his way until Haru’s door some years later. Will fate interfere once again or will they finally be able to stay together for good?

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader 🙂

Once again, I’d like to thank Hachiyumi for showing me this title. Just like it went with Ten Count, she texted me and said “YOU NEED TO READ THIS NOW”. And I did, and now we are both in love with it and desperate for new chapters, haha! This review contemplates Super Lovers series until volume seven, as it is still being published in Japan 🙂 So far, it is a 5 stars manga series for me (and I usually am not a fan of shotacon, a.k.a. a cute japanese word for pedophilia).

The narrative pace is slow and, sometimes, I confess that it bothers me. The series itself has a chapter out every FOUR MONTHS, so the slow pace adds to the reader’s frustration in having to wait such na awful long time to see what comes next. The good side is that every aspect of the narrative is rich in details. The story mostly follows Haru’s POV and he overthinks a lot of his life, notices his surroundings, take in many information and the reader goes with him in the process of separating it all.

Of course that this can be truly annoying in hotter scenes, lol.

vamp
but what to do, right?

Anyway, the plot is very sophisticated and intrincated. I have not even the slightest idea where does Miyuki-sensei want to go with Super Lovers. Every chapter has a twist, a new problem, a new barrier. We are forever trapped in a major cliff hanger for four months at time. It is maddening, but in a good way, haha! I still wouldn’t mind having to wait only two months instead of four, but one can’t always win…

tumblr_lk8fxloJYe1qfxq87o1_500
me after every end of chapter

The characters are very interesting. Not one of them tries to pretend that they have no defects and this is refreshing. The reality of their situation, of their problems and lives hit the reader hard and leaves us to see people like Haru and Ren all the time in our own lives. Honestly, it is awesome, haha! The way Haru and Ren develop their relationship is also a piece of art. They had steps and phases, always with Haru on the lead, but that doesn’t mean that Ren doesn’t take charge. They fight a lot, but still manage to not live without one another. Honestly. The only bad thing about this title is the publication pace.

Oh, and I can’t forget about the art, right? This is a huge strong point of this series and this author*:

Super.Lovers.full.1001921
from left to right: Haru and Ren ❤

Super.Lovers.full.1276314

Abe-sensei’s draws are fluid, delicate, manly, beautiful and real at the same time. HOW CAN SHE MANAGE THAT, OMG!

Bonus point: despite being a clear yaoi manga, we have yet to see any kind of sheets action between Haru and Ren. They have kissed in some ocasions, but not even close to enough, so it is good to savour the anticipation, haha!

5star

That’s it! Thanks for reading 😀 One review at time, someday I’ll have all my 2015 reads catalogued here, haha!

5 books I wish I had read before Christmas

Hello, there! Merry Christmas Eve to you! Almost official Christmas *–*

I was never that kind of person that feels the need to read books matching the time of the year. Like, I’m in the middle of Summer and I don’t think I’ll be reading a summer themed book any time soon. It’s Christmas time, I didn’t read any themed books or watched any different movies.

Usually, the end of the year is my most anticipated time of the year. You see, my parents and I live very far from anyone of our family, so the summer vacation with Christmas and New Year are our big chance to spend quality time with our loved ones. Besides, my family has some cool Christmas traditions that I love and the food is amazing, haha! So, as my real life is already wonderful during this time of the year, I never feel the need to run for a book and hide in its festivities.

However, it seems that nothing is changeless in the world. Several reasons piled up together killed my happy and nice summer vacations, along with my once cool Christmas time. Everything this year is just wrong. So, on this night of December 24th, I regret not escaping to a place where the party would give me a happy ending.

tumblr_mwtt1msWYy1rkekico2_r1_500

But let’s not cry over the spilled milk, right? 🙂 So I made a list with 5 books that I wish I had been able to read before Christmas, let’s go!

  1. The Captain’s Christmas Bride, by Annie Burrows

25785343

Wrong man

Lady Julia Whitney is at her wit’s end. Her perfect beau just won’t propose! But she’s struck upon a plan to ensure her marriage by Christmas. Between masquerades and mistletoe, she finds herself fully compromised by the wrong man!

Right husband?

Captain Dunbar cannot believe he’s fallen for this chit’s game! Now he must marry society miss Lady Julia with nothing to connect them other than incredible passion. But he’s about to discover that the best Christmas presents come in surprising, and delightful, packages!

  1. Winter Wonderland, by Heidi Cullinan (Minnesota Christmas #3)

25537817

Finding Mr. Right can be a snow lot of fun.

Paul Jansen was the only one of his friends who wanted a relationship. Naturally, he’s the last single man standing. No gay man within a fifty-mile radius wants more than casual sex.

No one, that is, except too-young, too-twinky Kyle Parks, who sends him suggestive texts and leaves X-rated snow sculptures on his front porch.

Kyle is tired of being the town’s resident Peter Pan. He’s twenty-five, not ten, and despite his effeminate appearance, he’s nothing but the boss in bed. He’s loved Paul since forever, and this Christmas, since they’re both working on the Winter Wonderland festival, he might finally get his chance for a holiday romance.

But Paul comes with baggage. His ultra-conservative family wants him paired up with a woman, not a man with Logan’s rainbow connection. When their anti-LGBT crusade spills beyond managing Paul’s love life and threatens the holiday festival, Kyle and Paul must fight for everyone’s happily ever after, including their own.

Warning: Contains erotic snow art, toppy twinks, and super-sweet holiday moments. Best savored with a mug of hot chocolate with a dash of spice.

  1. The Christmas Tree Bargain, by J.L. Langley (Ranch #3)

5584081

Christmas at The Tin Star Ranch brings means a lot of things to Jamie and Ethan. It’s a time of togetherness to celebrate the adversity they’ve overcome to be together. It’s also a time of playful bargaining.

Ethan insists on his usual ugly Christmas tree, and Jamie wants something in exchange. An early Christmas gift is the agreed-upon price, and Ethan knows he needs to make it good. Luckily, Ethan knows just what toy will satisfy The Christmas Tree Bargain.

Publisher’s Note: This is a male-male love story and contains homoerotic sex acts that may be offensive to some readers.

This would be actually a re-read and I still may do it, as it is a small ebook 🙂

  1. What a Lady Needs for Christmas, by Grace Burrowes (MacGregors #4)

18487087

The Best Gifts are the Unexpected Ones…

To escape a scandal, Lady Joan Flynn flees to her family’s estate in the Scottish Highlands. She needs a husband by Christmas, or the holidays will ring in nothing but ruin.

Practical, ambitious mill owner Dante Hartwell offers to marry Joan, because a wellborn wife is his best chance of gaining access to aristocratic investors.

As Christmas—and trouble—draw nearer, Dante and Joan’s marriage of convenience blossoms into unexpected intimacy, for true love often hides beneath the most unassuming holiday wrapping…

  1. Simon and the Christmas Spirit, by Bonnie Dee & Summer Devon

27774397

The holiday spirit has forsaken Simon Harris. A recent reminder of the man who used then left him sends lonely Simon on a glum visit to his club to while away a few hours. A breath of fresh air in the form of Christopher Andrews is about to enter his stale life.

Performer of many talents and faces, Christopher gained entrée into the club to win money at cards. Unfortunately, he’s losing. But the evening needn’t be a complete disappointment as he strikes up a friendship with a gentleman which ends in a bedroom.

Simon and Christopher enjoy a few hours of pleasure together, never expecting to see each other again, but Simon’s newfound resolution to change might just transform both their holidays.

I talked about this book here 😀

That’s it! Thanks for reading and sorry for laying my heart a bit on the beginning, but sometimes, we have to talk to someone, haha! And I’d love suggestions of Christmas books to read, haha!

#12daysofbooksmas2 readathon: RESULTS!

Hello, again! Happy Wednesday for you 🙂

So, the #12daysofbooksmas2 readathon came to an end yesterday and here I am to collect war spoils and bury the dead, haha!

readathon

I’d like to start this report saying that this was my first readathon in life, so I didn’t really knew what I was doing, LOL. As I had 10 days, I thought it would be nice to pick a book for each day (spoiler alert: no, it wasn’t). As those 10 days preceded Christmas and my family’s trip, I thought I had the eternity to read the books that I wanted (spoiler alert pt. 2: no, I hadn’t). And as we had to read a total of 1.200 pages, I was insanely worried that I would never be able to read so much in practically two weeks (spoiler alert pt. 3: I was, haha!).

Keeping all of these impressions on mind, add the information that I graduated in Journalism to the mix. You may reach the conclusion that I have no time space notion, that I can’t do math to see that 1.200 pages totalize approximately 5 books of 300 pages each and that I just didn’t know what I was doing. You are totally right, haha!

Gif-6-18-supernatural-21310553-400-225

But let’s go to the actual report:

Read books:

  • Cemetery Tours series, from Jacqueline E. Smith [review here]
  • Between Worlds, from Jacqueline E. Smith [review here]
  • After Death, from Jacqueline E. Smith [review here]
  • The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty, from Anne Rice [review here]
  • Braver With You, from A. Hart [review here]
  • Roses of the Angel, from Kalee Marshall [review coming soon!]

Completed challenges:

Read a book with red or green on the cover: check, Roses of the Angel

Read about book that’s on your end of the year tbr: check, all of the read books were on my TBR of the end of the year

Read a book that takes place during the holiday season: check, Braver With You

Read a sequel: double check, Between Worlds and After Death

Re-read a favorite book: flopped…

Read a book with a movie adaptation (and watch the movie): flop

Read a total of 1,200 pages! Check, as I’ve read 1.595 pages, haha!

It wasn’t great, but it was lots of fun 😀 Can’t wait for the next one, when I’ll be wiser, haha!

That’s it 😀 Thanks for reading and accompanying my progress in my first readathon!

Book author: Meg Cabot

Hello! Today we have the first post in my new section, Authors from my Heart <3, that will talk about a book author! Last time, I talked about a manga author and now we open the book author section with Meg Cabot!

The first time I’ve read a book by Meg Cabot, I was just a kid. I knew her from The Princess Diaries movies and, of course, wanted to read the books as well. I ran to the bookstore with my mom (I was about 8 or 9) and the first book in the collection was sold out on that particularly place. On that fateful day, my mom couldn’t take me anywhere else and I was so sad that I would have to wait a few more weeks to get it… I don’t remember why, but my mom wouldn’t be able to take me to another bookstore anytime soon. Then, feeling my pain, the bookshop seller said that I could take home a different Meg Cabot series while I waited for The Princess Diaries to be back on stock. That’s when I met The Mediator series ❤ I held the first book with its oh-so-ugly cover in my hands and wanted to cry. My mom insisted that I take it, along with volume 2 in The Princess Diaries series (which had a beautiful cover), so I did it. THANKS, MR. BOOKSHOP SELLER, THANKS, MOM!

tumblr_me7mrucHZn1ql5yr7o1_400

That’s how I got to know my all-time favorite series from Meg and how I discovered that I only liked when Meg wrote supernatural stories. I read the second book in TPD series, believing that I didn’t need book 1 as I had seen the movie and hated everything, haha! Point for the ugly covered book 🙂

In order of appearance in my life:

I love the movies with all my heart, but those books weren’t for me, simply like that. I used to have the Brazilian Edition in the picture, but I gave it away to my school’s library, as it was clear I would never read it again or continue reading…

IMG_4016
also from my Instagram o/

Oh those covers. Honestly, they were so ugly that the next Brazilian edition had it changed to this:

copia-de-wall_mediadora_1024
despite the inconstancy of Suzannah’s looks through those covers, they are still better than the ones I have home.

The sad part is to see that the original covers also sucked hard. Still, ugly covers or not, I love this series. Jesse was one of my first bookish boyfriends and he played a very important part in my life, as he was almost a cowboy and I have been fascinated by those since I’m a toddler that watched my dad reading Tex’s adventures (a cowboy with a yellow shirt, any bells ringing?). But I’m babbling and the important thing is: WE WILL HAVE ANOTHER BOOK IN THIS SERIES NEXT YEAR!

IMG_6692
Instagram ❤

This book shouldn’t be a standalone, Meg! Please, stop writing lame books and revisit this series, please! But, again: BRAZIL, WHY DO WE HAVE SUCH AN AWFUL COVER?!

93722

I was so happy with The Mediator and Jinx that I forgot how big of a flop that TPD was for me and borrowed The Boy Next Door from a friend. Awful mistake. I’m still not into those kind of books :/ I don’t even remember if I was able to finish it or not, haha!

7280000
I actually love the Brazilian Portuguese edition ❤

This book features several authors, including Stephenie Meyer, but Meg Cabot’s short story was my second favorite ❤ Stephenie’s one was awful.

IMG_6778

I had a true State of Grace when I started this series, as I was on a big hiatus from Meg (her fault, as she made it so hard for me to buy her historical romances and impossible for me to like her regular teen books). I read it slowly, savoring each chapter, because I knew it all ended in three books. And it did and I cried because I was once again orphan from her. And still am, btw. I plan on starting the 1-800-Where-R-You series, but I have no guarantees that I shall like it, so I’m delaying this moment, haha!

Oh, and by the way. 1-800-Where-R-You also has awful covers. Meg, you should sue most of your your graphic designers team. Just a friend’s advice, seriously.

That’s it! Thanks for reading ❤ Do you like Meg Cabot? Which is your favorite book? HAVE YOU READ 1-800-Where-R-You SERIES?! I need to know if I won’t have my heart broken, haha!

Shielded Past, from Patti Morelli

Hi, there! I AM GRADUATED OMG! I DID IT! GOODBYE COLLEGE!

tumblr_inline_nrn06lH7aB1qc22fu_500

Okay, I’m controlled now. This is my first review as a graduated journalist and I’m so happy that the book is Shielded Past, from sweet Patti Morelli! I received it from the author in exchange of an honest review and this is it! Let’s do this!

IMG_6743
from my Instagram 🙂

The Story

Kate was raised by a foster family and never really knew anything about her past. It wasn’t a problem: she had her best friend ever, Annie, a loving husband, Greg, a foster mom that was very proud of her… Or so she thought.

After moving to a lovely house and getting pregnant, Kate starts to feel that there is something off with her so-called perfect life. Everything looks creepy: her house, her neighborhood, her new dog, her past…

Now that she is expecting a child of her own, Kate needs to know whether those scary incidents are really happening or if she is losing her mind and could be qualified to be in a place like the old mental hospital near her home…

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion while reading the book 🙂

This book was AWESOME. SO AMAZING. SO PERFECT. I apologize in advance, as it is so much more complex than my humble description, but it was a creepy and intelligent read! It surpassed all my expectations and for sure was one of the best horror/mystery books that I’ve read in my life! Overall rating was 4 stars 🙂 Now let’s get serious, haha!

The writting technique is the point that lost a star on my rating. Specially on the beginning of the book, I felt that I was reading a screenplay that had been transformed into a movie. And there were other minor typing/grammatical errors along the way, so this is the only reason I didn’t gave this book a full and big 5 stars rating. It was a third person narrated book with switching point of views, in the exact way that I like, so we always knew all that was going on. Moreover, Morelli was brilliant at this because we couldn’t be sure of nothing until the really final chapters, as the mystery was too big. Morelli has a simple writing style that makes you fly by her story and feel the intensity of it like a punch, haha! I was constantly breathless each time that I picked up this book to read and couldn’t sleep after the end, haha!

The plot was brilliant and very well executed. For every aspect of her life that Kate solved, there were other four or five new that she had to question. PERFECTION. The mystery remains until the very end, as the real villain threatens to kill Kate and we don’t know if she is going to survive. And I’m not going to tell you if she did ❤ There are no loose ends on this book, everything gets solved – oh, almost. There is a bit of a cliff hanger on the epilogue, but I can live with that, it was nice, haha! I hope this becomes a series!

Bonus point: this is a horror/mystery book that has an old mental institution on its plot. I love those! It’s one of my favorite scenarios for horror books, haha! That’s why I lost my mind in the Asylum series, haha!

I also freaking loved the way Morelli builds her characters: they are so real in the little things, you know? Good or bad, their actions are true and you can understand their minds, their problems, desires and developments. I loved Annie and really connected with her (I swear is not just because my middle name is Anne, haha!). She was always so funny and optimistic despite everything that happened in her life and her eventual boyfriend is one of my new bookish boyfriends (oh the list that I never made, haha!).

The scenarios description was always very detailed, but not that kind that tires off the reader. I could see all the places just like in a movie in my head, where nothing passes in blank for Morelli. This is that type of book that, after you finish, you want to re-read just to see if you could have figured everything out sooner, haha! If you like a good thriller / mystery / horror book, just read this one. Just do it.

4star

That’s it! Thanks for reading and thanks again to Patti Morelli for trusting me with her work! I loved this ❤ Do you guys like books that talk about the horror of mental institutions??
