Hello, there! It’s time for another book review, yay! My baby today is Daughter of the Sun, the first book in the Cult of Cat series, by Zoe Kalo! I received my review copy from Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for an honest review 🙂 Thank you again and the time has arrived!
Sixteen-year-old Trinity was born during a solar eclipse and left at the doorsteps of a convent along with a torn piece of papyrus covered with ancient symbols. Raised by nuns in the English countryside, she leads a quiet life until she’s whisked away to the Island of Cats and a grandmother she never knew.
But before they can get to know each other, her grandmother dies. All that Trinity has left is a mysterious eye-shaped ring. And a thousand grieving cats. As Trinity tries to solve the enigma of the torn papyrus, she discovers a world of bloody sacrifices and evil curses, and a prophecy that points to her and her new feline abilities.
Unwilling to believe that any of the Egyptian gods could still be alive, Trinity turns to eighteen-year-old Seth and is instantly pulled into a vortex of sensations that forces her to confront her true self—and a horrifying destiny.
Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as reader 🙂
I’m fascinated about Egyptian mythology since I was a kid, but had never thought of looking for fictional books inspired by it until this year. Daughter of the Sun is my second book in this category and a really good one that freshened up Ancient Egypt myths without making them sound silly. I liked the main character, Trinity, well enough and she didn’t give me a hard time, which made the first person narrated book entertaining. My only complaint is that sometimes I’d feel the story dragging a bit and for sure, this could have been a shorter book. All in all, four stars 🙂
The narrative style, as I said, was first person from Trinity’s point of view and, once again, I was lucky to have got along well enough with her. I didn’t highly identify myself with her, but she never distressed enough to get on my nerves, so we’re cool with each other 🙂 Kalo’s writing style also helps by being awesomely beautiful and intense. There are some scenes in which everything was so clear in front of me as I read that I felt like watching a movie on those old machines that you need to spin the handle to keep watching, haha! (You know, as I was reading on my tablet and had to keep swiping off pages to keep going, haha!)
The plot took me by surprise, as it had so many twists and turns and awesomeness that left me lost and awake until 5AM today in order to keep reading, haha! And then, the book just ended. ENDED. OMG. There’s no cliff hanger, but I need more!!! I definitely plan on continuing the series ❤ Also, the way how Kalo portrayed and executed Egyptian Mythology was fabulous!
And yes, I needed to use that word. Because it felt like home for me, a true aficionado, but also had that touch of something new, mysterious and dangerous! My head was buzzing with questions as I finish the book, so that’s another reason why I NEED THE NEXT BOOK!
The characters were amazingly real. I was stunned to see how much they looked like my friends, neighbors, relatives and all! I think I kind of expected something out of this world in a bad way when I started reading Daughter of the Sun – it involves gods, you know? Haha! Not the case and it was delicious to be wrong. I haven’t decided yet if Seth deserves a spot on My Bookish Boyfriends list, but I’ll get there and update this review, haha!
Overall, if you like great YA, adventure, Egyptian Mythology and cats (yes, lots of cats), you need Daughter of the Sun in your TBR pile and virtual shelves!

A certified bookworm, Zoe Kalo has always been obsessed with books and reading. Reading led to writing—compulsively. No surprise that at 16, she wrote her first novel, which her classmates read and passed around secretly. The pleasure of writing and sharing her fantasy worlds has stayed with her, so now she wants to pass her stories to you with no secrecy—but with lots of mystery…
A daughter of adventurous expats, she’s had the good fortune of living on 3 continents, learning 4 languages, and experiencing a multicultural life. Currently, she’s working on a Master’s degree in Comparative Literature, which she balances between writing, taking care of her clowder of cats, and searching for the perfect bottle of pinot noir.

Thank you so much!! If I was using the word “fabulous” I needed to combine it with a diva, right? And it happens that Gaston is Disney’s largest diva LOL And I’m checking it right now!! ❤
